Let's talk sleepers.
Talk about factory sleepers.
Talk about building a sleeper.
Fantasize about sleeper builds.

Sleepers are high performance cars that look like unassuming everyday drivers.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUrfIW4zQmM

Examples of iconic sleepers of the 1990's:
1989-1999 Ford Taurus SHO
1991-1994 Chevrolet Lumina Euro 3.4
1997-2004 Buick Regal GS
1995-1999 Nissan Maxima

The Mazdaspeed 6 is heavy, yes, but it throws around its weight quite capably. Compared to the MS3, it's comfier and won't break your back every time you hit a bump. It was a touring car produced for only two years.

The 1997-1999 Chevrolet Lumina LTZ. In 1997, it was available with either the 3100 V6 or the 3.4L DOHC V6 (though only 7 3.4L cars have been confirmed to have been built). In 1998, the 3.4L option was replaced by the 3.8L 3800 series 2 V6, and in 1999 the 3.8L became standard.
Should you get a 3.8L 98 or 99 model, you can top swap it to supercharge it easily. It's the same basic V6 as the Buick Regal in OP's video

This thing. The first generation Skoda Superb. These have massive sleeper potential, and here's why:
It's a B5 VW Passat with its wheelbase stretched by about 10cm (~4"). The B5 VW Passat just so happens to be one of the few generations of Passat that's very closely related to its up-market cousin, the Audi A4. Where most Passats share a lot of characteristics with the Golf (transverse engine, Haldex AWD option, McPherson suspension) the B5 uses Audi's longitudinal engine layout, multilink front suspension, and proper full-time Torsen AWD. It also borrows its rear suspension (and front seat mounting points, for some bizarre reason) from the A6.
And so does the Skoda.

This means you can basically stuff the entire drivetrain from an S4 or RS4 (a twin turbo 2.7l V6 and a 6-speed manual transmission) into a fucking Skoda.
Or the A6/A8's 4.2l V8.
In a fucking Skoda.

>There's a guy in my town with a boosted 90's Ford Ranger. Not sure if he did an engine swap or what, just saw him do a crazy burnout and could hear the turbo.
the 2.3 and 2.5L 4 cylinder engines are in the same engine family as the 2.3L Turbos from the Ford Mustang SVO and the Ford Thunderbird Turbo. So it's entirely plausibly he just turbocharged the stock 4 cylinder in the Ranger.

1st gem m45.

Most people have no clue what it is around my area, there are barely any on the road. It looks like a simple 4 door sedan (i like the look).

No one would suspect it's got 340hp and near equal torque with a 0-60 of around 5.7 sec.

>>
>>16367618
That is cool. I wish I had a 3500 A-body shaggin' wagon
>>
>>16367625
I could nerd you off this board explaining the whole thing, but the key aspect is this is a 1996. The things I did to make it work will probably only work in a '96. Less than 8000 Century wagons were made in '96.

That's not to say it can't be done in earlier cars. I just don't have any experience.
>>
>>16367628
It could theoretically be done with 94-95 cars as well. 94-95 cars use OBD1.5 but OBD2 conversions, at least on the W-body scene, are pretty commonplace, so it's all laid out to convert those to OBD2.
>>
I have a stupid question

would there be anyway to mess around with a 1993 lumina with the 3.1 engine? i kinda want to do a summer project this year.

>>

Later. Much later. HD transmission first. The 4T60E is the weakest link. I will probably end up doing an NA build though. Nothing mad, like 200 hp to the wheels.

>>
>>16367634
3400 swap is doable. It's even possible to run it on the stock computer, afaik. Great upgrade path.

3800 is possible as well, but is more involved. Depends on how comfortable you are with wiring.
>>
>>16367634
>would there be anyway to mess around with a 1993 lumina with the 3.1 engine?
yes. You could gain a good amount of power swapping to 3400 heads and intake manifolds (use the 3400 headgaskets). Bolts right on and it should give you close to 200 HP... IF and only IF you have an ECU chip burnt for the changes.
These guys will do custom chips IIRC.
https://wot-tech.com/88-93-2-8/3-1-grand-prix-/-lumina-/-cutlass-/-regal-performance-chip.html

Why swap the engine when the 3.1 is a perfectly fine building block?

2011+ Chrysler 300C and SRT8

Both being rwd, 300C can be had with the 5.7 L V8 with 375 hp/395 lb-ft and 0-60 mph in 5.0 seconds while the SRT8 version came with the Apache 6.4 L V8 making 475 hp/470 lb-ft and 0-60 mph in 4.3 seconds.

Only downside is they are automatic only and Chrysler discontinued the 300 SRT version for God knows why....yet they still sell it in the middle east.

GM FWD V6 cars are almost all related (with the exception of the 3.8L 3800) so it can be a bit like playing with legos with the 2.8/3.1/3.4 DOHC/3100/3400/3500/3900

The only assistance I got, and granted it helped secure my Monte Carlo PCM, was a wiring diagram of the Century and MC PCMs so I could have the MC PCM repinned for my stock harness. No other suggestions, tips, tricks, or cautionary tales were offered.
>>
>>16367706
because no one else has experience with swapping an A-body.
>>
>>16367711
I suppose you are correct...

holy shit someone admitting they're wrong on the internet
>>
>>16367731
so question. instead of swapping to a 4T65eHD transmission, why not switch to a Getrag F23 5 speed manual from a 2000-2002 2200 J-body Sunfire/Cavalier? granted you would need custom transmission mounts, but the F23 has proven nearly bulletproof in both the J-body and Delta car communities. You have a 97 MC PCM so you can use HPTuners to eliminate all data pertaining to the automatic transmission.
>>
>>16367780
Manual swapping an A-body takes a lot more work than, say, a Cavalier. Custom axles, custom mounts, modified pedal box from another car, modified shifter from another car, modified shifter cable from another car, trying to find a non-shifter A-body steering column... Much more effort than I'm willing to put in to make my overall driving experience worse. An automatic is much easier for city driving in Las Vegas.
(inb4 le epic auto vs manual meme)
>>
>>16367810
fair enough. I never looked into the A-body, but I know that variant of the F23 bolts right up to the 60* V6's and is common for 3800 swaps into Fieros.
>>
>>16367814
yeah, the transmission bolts on no problem. it's just everything else that gets in the way.
>>
>>16367780
and for the record, I have Milzy Motorsports on the hook to rebuild my stock transmission into a 4T60E-HD. Not 65. Only mod is a passenger side axle (because of the different differential) and he will supply that. Should hold up to city driving, occasional drag racing, hauling eight people, towing another of my broke down hoopdies, etc., just fine.
>>
>>16365853

The 2.8 is similar to the 2.7TT, but it's missing a few key features such as 4 bolt mains and oil squirters.

To be honest, I'll have to take your word for it, I've never been that much into VAGs (phrasing boom). My impression is that it's possible to throw turbos on the stock VW block with reasonably good results, which is what I find attractive about it.
>>
>>16381074
Yeah, I've done some research on the subject and while the turbo stuff will bolt straight on, you'll run into issues a lot sooner than with an actual 2.7TT.

Oh, so you want Skoda-based trolling?
Well, allow the Danish police to assist you, seeing as they run 3.6 FSI Superbs specifically to catch speed offenders. So not only are you getting a ticket, you're getting it from a talking mustache that chased you down in a Skoda.
A Superb estate with that engine wouldn't be half bad.....
The Octavia VRS is probably done as a sleeper at this point, though. Too many people know what it is.

it might be more than 2 grand to get to 500hp and you will destroy your transmission if you do hard pull and get wheel skip/hop.

Even stock though the 9000 aero is quite a little rocket in the mid range.

This is true. The Gen 3's were full of issues. Mostly transmission and cam problems. If he spent money and time on the 93 it would be better for everyone and have him sell that shitty 99, if the 93 gets fixed up it will be worth more
>>
>>16390433
>>16390470
why can't you swap the 99 to a 5 speed using a 89-95 transmission?
There are fixes for the cam gear issues with the Yamaha V8

>>

Go with the Cressy, you can slap a 2JZ-GTE into it and smoke whoever dares to challenge you.

The 240 doesn't have that kind of easy swap potential (that I'm aware of), aside from the turbo engines, but you'll get way more potential out of even a 1JZ than a redblock.
>>
>>16393723
Get a 850T5R

Volvo 240 Turbos might of been sleepers a decade or two ago but not now
>>
>>16394103
Engine bay is big enough for a Ford 350 or something - so I understand
>>
>>16394124
Yeah, I know there's plenty of room in the 240's engine bay, but that doesn't mean you'll have an easy time installing a V8 or fitting whatever gearbox/transmission goes along with it.

The Cressy will use whatever you can get from the standard Toyota parts bin, so there will be a lot less hassle involved, which is good if this is your first build.

Personally I prefer the looks of it over the 240, too.

240's have commonly been candidates for GM LS swaps.
http://www.v8volvos.com/store/volvo-ls-motor-mount-kit/
http://www.stsmachininginc.com/products/copy-of-240-volvo-lsx-motor-mounts

Even a garden variety 5.3 Vortec would be great in one.
>>16394139
The great thing about the LS engines is they fit in fucking everything. And the Volvo and GM transmissions mount in a similar fashion.
>>
How are the 4WD Mitsubishi verandas and magmas for a sleeper
>>
>>16394326
They're solid cars, but the AWD doesn't come in manual (as far as I know) and the V6 is pretty much the same as in the FWD versions.

You might be able to shoehorn in a twin turbo DOHC V6 from one of the Legnums, though.

Even if it is a fwd shitbox i cannot hate the 850 T5 wagon.

What's a shitbox with double wishbone at all four corners that isn't a civic or a Miata?

There are a number of shitboxes with macpherson struts up front and double wishbones out back. The last gen Toyota Celica, 2001+ Honda Civics, Scion tC and Scion FR-S immediately spring to mind.

Aren't modern V6 sedans considered sleepers? Nobody expects a family sedan to be quick off the line.

>Chevy Impala
>base trim 3.6L V6, 305 HP, 6.0 seconds 0-60, 14.8 sec @ 97 mph

>Toyota Avalon
>3.5L V6, 268 HP, 6.1 seconds 0-60, 14.5 sec @ 98 mph

>Honda Accord
>3.5L V6, 278 HP, 5.8 seconds 0-60, 14.4 sec @ 99 mph

A Buick Roadmaster with the LT1, or Regal GS with the L67 gets approximately the same 0-60 times, and slightly slower quarter-mile times.

How much improvement will you really get by swapping cams/headers (LT1) or using a smaller pulley (L67)?

It's like you don't even want those tasty exhaust gasses to get passed through your turbo or something, senpai.

I owned a 99 Z34 (NA), a 95 Z34 (L67), and a 2000 SS (turbo)

nobody expected the 99 to be quick, people were shocked the 95 could hit 13's, my wife shit herself when I roasted an audi S7 on the highway
