BaSically, anything from late 80s toearly 90s. It was common for most base models to feature a manual transmission at that point because automatics still sucked. You'd probably be best off saving more money and looking for something newer since all of those cars will have potentially expensive issues.

Get a late 90s Saturn sl1. Only get the manual, auto was terrible. I drive a '99 as my beater and still pull down 39mpg on my 20min commute.
The body panels stay looking good and the seat fits my ass just right.

As much as everyone loves it, the 22R is not a great engine.
You'll need to replace the timing chain right away, along with the timing chain guides and the timing cover.
Unless it's a 22R-E the carb is going to be a B I T C H to work with.

Well, Toyotas in general have good support here in Estados Unidos, both aftermarket and dealer.
Want to put a Weber carb on? Not a problem.
Want to do a dual-row timing chain conversion? Shipped to your door!
Want to keep the single-row chain but upgrade to steel guides? You should do that. No, seriously, it's the achilles heel of the 22R.
They're basically Japanese Chevy. You can find parts down at the local Circle K.

Volvo 850, or if you want something RWD and a little more boxy, then the Volvo 960.
Could get a lowish mileage 2nd gen ranger with 4cyl/5spd/2WD
Fun truck.
