most cars come with a manual mode if they are 2003+

Ideally, gear changes should manual and electro/hydraulic with an auto override (cruise control for cool) and clutch operation should be automatic and electro/hydraulic with a manual override, and there should be no torque converter anywhere in the car.

Some people like driving stick because it's fun. You feel like the engine is pretty much directly linked to and turning the wheels. Telling us that F1 cars don't have a stick isn't going to convince anyone that it's not fun.

Automatics are fine for luxobarges but if I learn that someone is unable to drive stick my respect for that person drops.

Manual provides a more direct application of control over the physical world, which is considered masculine. Being able to exert your will in general is considered masculine.

City traffic isn't even that bad unless you have a performance clutch installed. If your leg hurts from depressing the clutch every 10 seconds you're already 10 hamburgers away from a cardiac event.

Because of the torque converter and hydraulic or electrich actuators to shift you have a heavier and more complex transmission.
The torque converter eats up a part of your engine power, wich gives your car a worse mileage.
Manuls are much more simple from the engeneering perspective than autos, mechanicly more efficient.

If we talk about DCTs and other automatised transmissions, the average driver will get only a small difference in fuel economy and performance.
The better driver usually gets a better performance in a manual gearbox or a DCT in manual mode than with a autotragic since he can chose the gears better than the coputer since he knows what he will do next and wich rev range he wants for that.

In my 2014 car the atomatic gearbox version needs about 10% more than the manual version in real life application.
In real life application you can also gain more efficiency with a manual car since you can rev low and open the throttle wide during acceleration and keep the rpm lower while maintaining speed.
