quick question to those of /o/. if i start my mazdaspeed3 in the morning and its cold as fuck out, is it normal for there to be black smoke coming out the tail pipe for a few seconds, or should i be worrying

car might be lean
>>16347711
wouldn't black smoke mean a rich condition?
>>16345979
i don't know
>>16345979
is the exhaust stock? is there an engine light on?
owned a mazdaspeed6
yeah it's normal. it's running rich to prevent predetonation.
>>16345979
Black? No, not normal. Check codes
>>16345979
Yes anon, its normal. It happens to me if I rev it when the car isnt warmed up. Get a block heater and also let the engine reduce its idle back at low RPM's after starting it up. (Should take 3-7 mins)

This is a great idea if you want to ruin your engine's cylinder bores and push a heap of gas into the oil.

How? You're just letting the engine warm up by sitting there, not moving. How is that a problem? Are you supposed to start the car and drive off without it warming up, especially a turbo car?
>>16348796
Yes
You are supposed to drive at low speeds and low load until it warms up.
Letting it sit to warm up is bad because no oil gets up into the top part of the engine.

Moron

How would no oil get up to the top of the engine? You don't have to drive to have oil circulate. What do you think an oil pump is for?

My friend has had a ms3 and ms6 and they both blew more smoke on start up then my 25 year old turbo car

Other dude is right but for the wrong reason.
Letting your car idle to warm it up is bad because in colder weather your fuel injector adds more fuel which combined with slower moving oil (cause cold) means your cylinder walls aren't as protected. Also can cause oil dilution. Driving it warms it up faster which can prevent this. Letting it sit for a bit to make sure you've got oil flowing is fine but more than a minute and you're starting to do damage.
