What's the furthest you'd travel to look at a promising car offer? I'm looking at ads right now and for reasons unknown most of them are at least a 4h drive each way.
Two hours if it's some unicorn. 45 mins for a common car.
Depends more on what condition it's in for the price though. If it's a 96 Town Car without a single blemish or problem for $3k I'll drive three hours both ways.

If it's a special snowflake I know I'll never find, any distance. I've heard of independent inspectors that will look at a car for you if you don't know anyone in the area. And if the drive is over 6 hours or so you could get a cheap one-way plane ticket and just get familiar with the car on the drive home.

But I'm not even 100% sure that I'd buy it.

They're largely useless. Better off paying for a ppi at an actual legit shop than paying some tire-kicking """""inspector""""" to go out and walk around it a few times while ticking some check boxes on a clipboard.
If the seller won't agree to a ppi then something is sketchy and you should walk away.

I think ppi is what I was trying to refer to but didn't know how to say it. No, I wouldn't pay some fuckwit to kick the tires on my behalf.

That's what the ppi is for, and if you're not completely ready to buy it then just keep browsing the ads and dreaming about it.
