I recently bought a 2005 Honda Accord EX V6 Coupe off Craigslist, with 80,000 miles for $3K flat.

It's a salvage title, but after taking it for a pretty lengthy test drive and seeing that it ran very well, running a VIN check and a Carfax on it, I decided it was worth the risk and hassle and I bought it. Considering that cars equivalent to it in my area go for $10K or so, I figure that even if I have to put some money into it I'll still come out ahead. Here's the reason it is a salvage title: it appears that it was in New York during Hurricane Sandy, so it was water damaged and written off by the insurance company as a total loss.

The most common advice seems to be to avoid water damaged cars at all cost. However, it appears that in the four years since it was "totaled", somebody has put another 30,000 miles on it, and it still drives fucking fantastic. There also doesn't seem to be any noticable residual damage to the car that I can detect with my untrained senses. There's no residue or rust in the interior and it smells fine inside the car. The biggest problem I can find is that the windshield wipers don't work for some reason.

Did I make a good decision by buying this car, or was it a deal that is too good to be true? Also, what kinds of things are likely to go wrong with my car in the future, and what can I do to prevent or at least delay the inevitable?

I'd say you got your money's worth if you feel like it can run another 60k miles.

for 3k sure. I would change all fluids in it, just in case anyways

just my opnion though

I fucked up - I actually meant a sedan, not a coupe. My bad.

I'm not exactly what you would call car educated, but as far as I can tell, the car runs perfectly.

I plan on taking it to a local mechanic ASAP. I kind of have to do so anyways, since I can't pass inspection -> get a rebuilt title -> get plates -> drive the car until I fix the windshield wipers. Anyone have any advice as to what sort of service I should be looking for? This is my first car, so this is all new to me.

Sorry OP, you bought a car infamous for transmission failure.

The general consensus on those is to drain/refill the fluid about 4 times then change it every 15,000 miles after that, you'll need to do some research on the best way to keep it alive.

Adding to this, if it's a manual trans you'll be fine.

Nope, it's an automatic. I can drive a standard transmission, but I didn't really want one for my first car. That's unfortunate that the transmission could fail soon :(

To keep the transmission from prematurely failing, use Honda fluid and never let lube shops talk you into flushing it. Also, buy good Iridium plugs for the engine. The $8 per plug is worth it in the long run. Also, a timing belt service needs to be done, unless it's documented that's it has been done recently.
