The whole engine? Probably not worth, but you should definitely take the head off and see if it's gone soft or anything - if it's still good then just slap a new head gasket in and keep on going. Maybe do the chain tensioner and guides if you feel like it, the engine could last for years more.

If it's soft then the BA Barra will give you 182 kw compared to an AU's 157 kw, but if it's out of an LPG taxi then you're not really going to see any major gains, just more money wasted on coil packs lol

If you want to keep the car for, like, another 5-10 years, go for a low mileage AU engine and do it up a little, cam/exhaust/tune etc. That'll put you around BA power with a fresh engine that can drop right in, instead of using a worn out gasser.

If it hasn't overheated then you should be able to get away with just slapping a new gasket in and calling it a day.

Heads only tend to warp or soften if they experience too much heat, which usually happens when a head gasket blows - if your engine is still running smoothly then the head should be fine.

Sure, it's a good idea to replace the chain guides and tensioners, but most of the cost in that '$1000' will come from getting your head redone - if it isn't soft or warped then you won't need to spend anywhere near a grand doing this. Ford head gaskets, coolant, and other miscellaneous bits are cheap and easy to get, and all you'll need to clean the head and block is a decent scraper (or a pack of razor blades) and a wire brush.
