I buy the triball single piece setups. You never lose a ball and always have all three. I standardized all my own trailers on 2" balls for convenience and better coupler choice.

get 2", also make sure the coupler is adjusted for the 2" ball

Just get a pintle hitch and never worry about any of this.

I use this ball set and love it, keep it oiled and you can change by hand quickly. Have towed 5000lb trailers with no issues and have never had the ball come loose.
