These are ridiculously cheap on Craigslist. That can't be good, right?
Well, what does it say? I don't think the panel gap should be that big anyways

Maybe it was in a crash?
I don't know I see a lot of Jettas with ~50k miles for less than 12 grand.
Have an 07 Mk5 GLI, bought from a stealership for 13k, super clean with 50k miles mid 2015, as far as maintenance goes, all I've needed to do is change the oil (which the 2.0T FSI engine drinks) nearing the end of 2016 with 78k miles still no signs of giving any fucks.
Mk6s are riddled with electrical issues and the Mk7s seem to be ok so far, only minor electrical things.
Done nearly 30k miles now with a stage 1+ unitronic, CAI and cat back 2.5" exhaust. Dropping in bigger downpipe, bigger intercooler, and stage 2 come this summer as well as motor and trans street mounts because super lame stock mounts.
Just research what years and Mk's you're looking at so you know what you're in for.

Well they were around 20k new. depreciating 8-10k is normal in 50k miles. dieselgate didn't help anything

So are they worth it? Is it more "premium" than say. . . a Mazda3? I've seen 2016 Mazda6's for like $15k is it worth spending more for that, do you think?

No. You should get a civic for 3k or a used luxury car for 20k+
