Before I had a 91 Celica with the same 2.2 and it tossed a rod. Replaced engine with a use one. Oil filter blew off (the threaded tube came off engine) and shut it down almost immediately. The engine knocked loudly and the oil light took 15 sec to turn off after every start. Those cars werent reliable.

Usually Asians buy brand new Toyota's and Honda's, they tend to take care of their shit. They use them for 15 years then sell them to some Dindu or Mexican, they sell it to some methhead then you buy it 9 owners later. That's why most of the remaining Honda's and Toyota's are barely running.

A lot of the cars manufactured around that time were done so without the guidance and knowledge of a streamlined volume-based process. The cut throat nature of competition had manufacturers pumping out vehicles even though they weren't doing it as efficiently as they could. They did not know yet where to cut costs.

It's only once they figure out how to cut corners to maximize profits do things start actually going to shit.

It's kind of like how we were able to go to the fucking moon in 1969 but have made very little progress since then. It was because we were so desperate to get on the map that we had to accomplish it a not so efficient way.

Japanese manufacturers have a similar background in that era.
