My bricks sans the '92 245. Yeah, the 850 is nice but being wrong wheel drive is a real deal breaker in my book. What comes close is the 960/S90, but if only they turbo'd those! I dunno, I still love the red block though; white blocks are nice, but can be problematic.

Ah I was hoping itd be a grand or something since its a 35 year old Volvo with the old crappy harness. Wishful thinking since it looks so nice in one of my favorite Volvo colors. Would you mind if I came and looked at it sometime even though I don't think I'd be interested in buying? The 240 is one of my favorite cars. I have an 850 Turbo that's currently not registered because I was too lazy to go down to emissions and the title place.
>>
>>16285176
Surprise, there is no harness. Dat mechanical fuel injection.

It would be a grand if it was a shitty condition one with 300k on the clock. But since it's great condition and great interior, daily derivable, comes with a set of hydra and virgo wheels, and extra turbo engine, and an extra manual transmission it's just a little bit more...

I'll go with you to get the emissions done my man. Join the AZ volvo facebook group when you get a chance!
>>
>>16285220

I used to live on the border of Surprise/El Mirage most of my family is out there still was just out there last week in my MR2. I will join the Volvo club for sure! Im part of the AZ MR2 club via someone at my work who saw me in my MR2. Hes got a HKS supercharged MR2 that sounds really awesome and hes an older engineer so I'm sure hes done it right. We got TLAO here n stuff and I've seen a few T5-Rs. Arizona has so many cool Volvos.

>The HPT cars with their stock 15G turbo reach their limitations fairly quickly. A reprogrammed ECU, coupled with good 2.5"-3" full exhaust, will generally get you to the limits of the 15G's efficiency. The ECU will increase fuel and boost maps to about 15-16 psi maximum boost. For a little more performance, you can add a boost controller (don't think you can on the ME7 1999+ cars) to decrease spool-up time and increase the boost an extra pound or two (beyond that isn't too useful).

I think i'm good

Like any other Euro luxobarge the S90 will probably be prohibitively expensive to operate after it's 3 years old because of all of the electronics and shit that will inevitably go wrong.

>>16288401
It's Haldex. 3rd gen on the 04-05, 4th gen on the 06-07. Big difference between generations is that the later generation's power transfer from front to rear is basically instant, but it still has that crappy crappy Haldex feel to it. Also, the angle collar gear on the AWD system has a habit of eating shit, especially on 04-05, and that is a very expensive repair.

They're nice cars, best for comfy road trips, and pretty fun for winter hoonery if you fit good snow tires. But I'm thinking of selling my '07, as it's closing in on 90k miles and I'm a bit paranoid about the collar gear problem and of the cylinder walls cracking. Dunno what the heck I'd replace it with, though. Maybe a M2 or E93 M3.

Hey Volvo fags, I'm looking for some advice. My dad has a V70 that's on its last legs. We've been discussing what he wants next and he says he still wants a wagon. What he has in mind is a Subaru Outback.
Now, the main thing he hated about the V70 is how expensive and difficult it is to maintain. I was thinking about recommending him a 240 wagon because I heard they were really reliable and easy to take care of (plus they have more space). Is that true or is it just a meme?

Yup auto only and even in 90/91 they had the weaker computer control system. It's still not bad, just try to get a 90 or 91 because they came with stronger rods.

>Check out that blue interior, sexy
>>
>>16279755
Why 740 when 940 exists though? Basically the same car but a nicer interior THICCer connecting rods to handle BOOSD.
>>
>>16306320
90-92 740's had the thick connecting rods too.
>>
>>16278614
Sorry for being new but how the fuck did bmw and volvo get along both having vehicles named 850,740, etc?
>>
I'm thinking of getting a Volvo wagon, why do people like them so much and which ones are good?
>>
>>16306752

740 and 850 BMW are higher end luxury.

With Volvo its a comfy safe yuppie car.
>>
>>16306251
The 240 was very reliable for its time, but age is going to cause trouble for any car. If the car has been meticulously taken care of, then sure, go for it. Here's a guide for shit to check: http://www.volvotips.com/index.php/240-260/volvo-240-260-buying-tips/

Then again, there's a laundry list of shit to watch out for with Outbacks that aren't even a quarter of a 240's age.

Will be looking into a new daily soon. I have a Chevy sonic that's almost paid off. It's got 70k miles and has had $5k in warranty work done in the past two months. May outright sell it and find a minty classic to drive. I have a backup vehicle and can wrench. The question is, should I get a 240? I like Volvo's, used to have a V70 T5. Would you guys drive a 240 over a W123 Benz Turbodiesel?

Side note, almost bought a P1800 for $600 once. Owner flaked on me and dropped off the face of the earth. Car is still sitting next to his barn. Poor thing needs saved.

>why do people like them so much
in a sentence, Swedes make things to last
>mostly easy to repair
>stuff is laid out nicely in the engine bay
>they over engineered everything, sometimes not for the better (i.e. PCV system)
>parts are plentiful and reasonably priced
>long production runs
>comfy but common enough to be cheap now
>lots of neglected ones for less than $500
>safe
>large cargo space and boxy shapes

>which ones are good
they're all good, but 850 Turbos are trifecta of memecar

Anyone here ever wondered if it is possible to copy a volvo 240 key using a $500k 500W lasercutter? I'm glad to report that it indeed is!

Just got this done today, I didn't have a spare key for my 240 I decided to try and use a Volvo KIR (Key In Remote) shell from eBay and then cut out the profile of my key on one of the machines at work. After some dremeling to add the center grooves, since the lasercutter only does 2D, the key fit near perfectly in both the door lock and the ignition.

Next up is fitting a remote controller relay transmitter PCB into the KIR shell so I can open the doors via remote.

I would highly suggest getting a 240. Love my '93 240 5-speed, but it does need some TLC. I personally don't have the space, time or money to fix mine up, but if you do, you'll have a ball working on it. Everything (aside from the vacuum system) is laid out very logically and straightforward. If you can find a 5-speed (not one of the 4-speed + overdrive models), then jump on that even if it looks a little abused. They are very resilient vehicles.

I cannot speak on the comparison to the Merc though as I never have owned or driven one before, but I imagine you can find the 240 for much cheaper.
>>
>>16308771
>TFW drove a V70 for 8 years
It might look the about the same as the 850 but it was no where near as good
>>
>>16309670
I admire the mod you're trying to accomplish. However, I've always stuck to getting a plain key made and unlocking from the door. Something so satisfying about that loud, metallic "clunk" when unlocking the doors. Plus, a spare key was only $3 from my local hardware store.
>>
>>16309747
I personally own a 2000 V70 and quite like it. It's a comfy car, and even with mine bring the automatic, non-torbo, FWD base model, still has some get-up-and-go. Not fast by any means, but in races I've been neck-&-neck with my friend's Golf GTi
>>
>>16306229
Not the most ideal Volvo to get, but that's a pretty good deal. Once you get it though, just take care of it and it'll take care of you.

People always reference how Ford owned Volvo during those years, but they were still Volvo. They had control over most of the manufacture. Only real difference is that Ford made then cut a few corners to save monies, but nothing that made them plummet in reliability or quality.
>>
>>16307888
Meticulous case for one is ideally what you want to look for, but the 240 is easy to rehab if it's been abused a little bit. Mine has 250,000+ miles (odo stopped working around there lol), has had 4+ people learn how to drive stick on it, and still has the original clutch, and with minimal slippage at that. There is a good amount that will go wrong with one, mainly electronic stuff, but the essential parts of it with keep going with basic maintenance.

Oh you're totally right, this wasn't done out of need. I just happened to be bored at work and one of our lasers was free so I decided to give it a try just for fun. I had that KIR shell laying around because I was planning on using it for my S80 but never got around to it. I do quite alot of fucking around at work, pic related is my shift knob insert I made since the old one was missing a piece.

If anyone is wondering how I got the profile of my key onto the PC used to create the CNC program for it, I simply threw my key into one of those all in one printers that have a scanner bed, then imported the image to AutoCAD and traced the key.

Within the context of nice vehicles, yes, a 240 is much cheaper. I may keep an eye out. Ironically, the sonic puked again on me last night. Just got towed to the dealership this morning. They haven't diagnosed it yet. It blew the oil fill cap off and blasted everything under the hood with oil. Idle is rough. May have lost some coolant too. I'm thinking they should be tired of seeing me by now.
>>
>>16309791
Anyone here have issues with the Crankshaft breather in an S40? It's the only issue with that car, I think. The oil cap is leaking
