Winter tires if you want

>>

It's amazing, really. Basic shit, and they can't do it no matter how many years they experience the same conditions.
>>
>>16273965
You forgot no rapid accelerations.
But indeed it is pretty basic stuff.
>>
>>16273873
Our snow plows/winter street cleaning guys are never on their game combined with people forgetting how to drive whenever the snow comes back. On that street the guys who throw down the road salt only did the opposite side and fucked off. Most of them probably didn't have their winter tires on as well, they're legally required to only by the 15th of December.

Most people will fuck up those.
If you realy want to do skids drive on a empty parking lot.
>>
Ice is ice, on a hill like that unless you had chains or studded tires you'd be sliding as well.
>>
>>16273790
Funny, its illegal in Quebec not to have snow tires on at this time of year.
>>
>>16274097
Nordic-friction class studless tires should've done just fine, unless my eyes deceive me and that hill is covered in absolutely "fine polished" ice with water or dry powder snow ontop

That shit is the worst
>>

>>
>>16274117
The way everything is sliding, it looks like a slippery layer of black ice to me with just a bit of snow sprinkled on.

Not much to do in that situation other than ride it down, or take your foot of the brake and hope the steering tires get enough traction to let you avoid the obstacles.

With chains you should have been able to help.
>>
>>16274153
You could be right.

Remimds me of last winter when I was heading up the mountain road to drop off some keys. On the longest "straight" I see a red Starcraft on yellow plates coming down the road, and I notice that its moving slow and weirdly. As it passes I can see the wheels all locked up, with the driver frantically shouting to the passengers, just sliding down the road

Luckily the road leveled a little bit out further down, and had also been gritted recently
>>

How would the cops get you anyway when they can´t even drive?
>>
>>16273790

What the fuck. This is Canada. How the fuck do none of these stupid assholes know what to do? Not even driving wise. If the hill is that bad all the police have to do is shut the fucking road down at the top of the hill. I would expect to see this sort of retardation out of Atlanta or something, but this just proves Canadians are fucking stupid.
>>
>>16274258

>>snow chains illegal
>dafaq

Yeah fucking studs and chains are banned because they "ruin" the road. It's really stupid IMO, because the majority aren't going to run either anyways (not even half use fucking snows), thereby hardly ruining the road.
>>
>>16274289
Yeah its true, I dont deny it. But there was a good 40cm of snow, I'd have gotten stuck getting to them, let alone pulling them

>>
>>16274315
Yeah I don't at all desu

Most places in my country allow them, even ones who get less snow, its just fucking dumb
>>
>>16274306
Heh, then you'd probably be of no help

40cm of snow and you'd get stuck? What kind of tires are you/were you running?

Or do RWD Rangers sit stupidly low?
>>
>>16274318
idk man

I just happen to live in the only province in canada who thought it was a good idea to ban them

Literally the only one
>>
>>16273873

See, Queerbec passed their mandatory snow tire law a few years ago, and ever since then they've slowly, slowly slowly stripped away the winter maintenance budget. Add to the fact that bigger cities like Montreal are old and not really designed for bigger vehicles, traditional plows don't fit in the streets nicely, making it hard for them to do anything to begin with.

Its a very slippery slope.

>>
>>16274318
Thats the logic I wish our government here would apply to studded tires

Tire manufacturers were given a two year dispensation to produce and sell tires with more than 90 studs for 13 inch, 110 for 14-15 inch and 130 studs for 16 and bigger until they were able to do tests to see if using more, but lighter studs would still allow the tire to be within the acceptable range of how much "flying particles" it can create

Now that dispensation is coming to an end, which means that it might be the end for great tires like the Conti IceContact 2 and Hakkapeliitta 8 here in Norway

Just let those of us who drive on pretty much only ice and snow in winter drive with our life saving studs do just that, and let those who dont drive studless. Modern premium studless tires are fucking great, and there is no reason one wouldn't pick those if you're not constantly battling ice and hard snow (where they also perform quite good)

Quebec drivers are the worse in snow. They've never learned to drive in it because they plow and salt everything that even remotely looks like a road. If you want to learn how to drive in snow you go to Saskatchewan or Alberta where they don't plow shit. Then when you move down east you have a laugh at all the AWD dumbfucks stuck in the ditch when there's barely an inch of white shit on the ground.

I should probably get some new tires but in the near-freezing wet that we're getting here in the Pacific Northwest, I'm able to break traction for fractions of a second in my S60R with crappy Conti Extremecontact DWS tires, which is a nice change of pace.

>>16274128

Many people who live in Montreal consider themselves apart from Quebec and Canada.

>>16276386

Pretty much this. So many older generations and Frenchies who think and act like old people have full on winter amnesia every goddamn year. Even last night a guy in a X5 nearly rammed me from behind before I was slowing down at three times the stopping distance because it was pure ice. He stopped 90 degrees relative to me about 5 car lengths behind me. I did it so gently my abs didn't even kick in.

>How could you harm the roads when they are covered in snow an ice?

In the seattle area, the higher mountain areas where the richer people live have the ice while the lower areas have no ice or snow. But the government's laws allow studded tires november all the way to March 31. So the low elevation roads and freeways are all torn up by these studded tires running on roads that have never seen ice or snow all winter.
>>
>>16277607
Ban the studs. When it gets icy, put on chains.

Try driving over 20 MPH with chains .... THUMP, THUMP, THUMP. So you'll take them off just as soon as possible. And you'll slow the fuck down with them on, which will go a long way to keeping you safe. You can't take studded tires off (and on and off and on ....).

But now Seattle is salting roads, so fuck them. I-5 is largely elevated through town, so the rebar in the columns and all the local road bridges will be gone in a few years. And the fish in streams will all be dead. So who cares about a few chicken-shit ruts?

Oh yes, studded tires most certainly would have
>>
>>16278882
studded tires are a double-edged sword. they're great on ice but way slippier when the pavement is only dry or wet, so if you live somewhere they salt a lot and there's rarely actual snow or ice on the road, they'll be shit. My braking distance was vastly increased because of studs on dry pavement and I almost went off the road trying to evade a collision, you could see the scratch marks on the asphalt where the tires just slid instead of gripping. Are they worth it for the ONE day you've gotta drive before the plows have been out? probably not for most people.
>>
>>16279169
That's bullshit though, they'll still be better all around than anything else. You still have way more stopping power on pavement than you should need.
>>
>>16279189

Nnnnot quite - here are the two current best tires when it comes to dealing with ice, and as you can see they are very different in thread, siping and more

You can't just throw studs onto a winter tire and expect it to work brilliantly. You gotta design the tire as its standalone studded tire

>keep car in first gear to engine brake
Shift down, yes. Dropping it to first could be a bad idea depending how fast you are already skidding. Automatics have gear selection 1 & 2 for this but normies don't realize it's use.

>press brake without locking it up
Case by case, if the amount you are pressing is locking it up then stop.
>pull e-brake a bit
There is an application for this but not skidding afaik. RWD, stuck, then use the e-brake as resistance to prevent spinning out while trying to get unstuck. Think of it as a forced "crawl" mode.
>keep front wheels spinning to steer away
Yes, always. Hitting any little bit of grip is wasted if the wheels are locked up.

He almost made it out last second, when he hit the gas. But he slammed on the brakes and lost control once again. Had he manned up and just gave it gas from beginning, he would have been fine.

Take your foot off he has, don't press the brake, and get the front wheels lined up in the direction you intend to go. Your tires will hook up eventually, or you'll run off the road.
