Want to buy my younger brother a radar detector for Christmas but I know nothing about them, including their legality.

Are they legal in Missouri? Any specific kinds that are better than others? Not looking to break the bank so a mid range one will suffice
>>
9/10 times they are a waste because cops will find out you have a radar before you pick them up on it
>>
>>16246528
the cops can detect radar detectors?
>>
>>16246528
Really? I've got a friend with one and I don't think he's ever been caught/pulled over. Then again he isn't really the type to do stupid speeds
>>
>>16246554
Radar detector detectors are a thing.
I live in based Ohio where radar detectors are legal and traffic light cam tickets are thrown out in court.
Unfortunately I also live in Cincinnati where the police can legally "eyeball" your speed and it stands up in court.

I looked this stuff up recently out of pure curiosity. I think this guide is pretty good.

[I'm not an expert by any means]
and this was pretty good at showing what to avoid.:

basically just says that false alarms are annoying with a cheap detector. and it picks up random signals a lot. If i were to buy one, I'd look for a mid range around 300$ that is accurate enough to avoid constant false alarms.
>>
>>16246554
There are models like the one in OPs picture that can't be detected.
>>
>>16246620
Well shit I was hoping for like $150 or less. I don't want to get him a shitty one either so I guess I'll have to think of something else

Thanks for the info
>>
>>16246812
you could probably find one for that. 300 is just where most of them will be good I think. check that guide for something between 100-200$. there is probably a decent option there.
>>
>>16246620
You have to see it as an investment, so I paid 650$ for mine.
>it learns false alarms, and I love it.
>>
>>16246523
Don't. If he gets pulled over and the cop sees it he's guaranteed to get a ticket when he might've just gotten a warning. If you pay attention to other cars and drive the same route every day you learn where they sit and when they might be ahead.
>>
>>16246528
So what if they detect it where it's legal? As long as I'm still warned they can't get me right?
>>
>>16246923
Model?

This is why you mount it under the dash.

its really fucking good, phone helps out alot.
>>
Try craigslist for a used one, I picked up a v1 for 100 on there.
>>
>>16247014
I'd also recommend getting one used
>>
>>16246964
Thanks anon. But if I'm paying $650, is this one that says where the radar is coming from? If I gotta pay that much I'd hope I'd get that too
>>
>>16247023
yea, it also monitors up to eight different incoming radars, the only thing that isn't so good about it, is that it won't point to which side it's coming from (left and right).
Picks up KA-pop (the invisible radar under the normal KA band)
Picks up laser as well, the phone app is like a sudo updater for the thing, I don't like how they tried to integrate a payment plan for updates even though the bluetooth sync to phone app hold the updates and a community thing like waze.
range is 2 to three miles.
You should sync it up with your phone, the only reason why I say that is that it has a sensitivity changer that is based on speed and doesn't have a gps built in.

I don't see the point in them.

Your best bet is the two eyeballs that the Lord gave you and learning/knowing the route you're driving. If you're going to speed crazy fast then you need to be just-took-3-adderall alert of your surroundings and use your brain. Oh, there's obscured areas of median coming up on the freeway? Hmmm... probably not a good idea to do 30 over at this moment. In my experience the only thing radar detectors are good at is letting you know the exact moment in which the trooper has clocked you and is turning his lights on.

The only technology I would say is genuinely useful these days is the Waze smartphone app. Crowdsourcing information about road hazards and emergency vehicle locations is just a good idea in general, specifically as we prepare for an autonomous future.

>2 to 3 miles
On salt flats if they're already pointing at you, maybe.
