what's it's like to work on a e36?
is the vanos threat a meme?
>VANOS
More of a gradual loss of power than anything serious like the E46 cars
>How hard
Get a Hex and Torx socket set, and all the odd Metric sizes (7/11/13/15/16/18/20mm) and you'll be fine. Don't buy one as a daily driver or a track car, there's better more reliable cars you can get than a 20 year old BMW on its 4th owner and everything made out of rubber on its last legs

Yes
If you can daily a E30 you can daily a E36. Just replace the finicky 1980s electrical and rust with slightly less rust and the shittiest plastic/rubber in automotive history used on every square inch of the car. Mechanicals are solid except for when something that relies on a plastic/rubber part fails (think guibo/center bearing, cooling system, clutch pivot pin, anything that resembles a bushing or balljoint). Check for torn strut tower (where they bolt into) and head gaskets (common with high mileage or overheating)
It's a E30 with rear multilink and a nicer interior.

Forgot, head gaskets can manifest not just as mixing oil and coolant but as a really bad oil leak towards cylinder #6 easily confused with a really bad valve cover gasket on these cars. Otherwise pretty good

Hey since you know E30s can I ask you a question? I just bought a 1988 325is and when I rev above about 2k, it sounds like there is some rubbing sound. I don't know if it's the fan rubbing, or if it's the timing belt or what. I haven't had a chance to look at it. Do M20s just sound like that? I'm going to open it up and look at the timing belt if I can't find anything else.
