Help me decide what I should get for my next car! I'm trying to decide what I should get for my next car, I currently have an ae86 and am considering getting a better shell in the spring. My other options are an E30, and a Merkur XR4Ti. What do you think I should get /o/?

I have a 91 318is almost identical to the one you posted. Excellent car everything is perfect except for A/c. It's my second e30 and I'm convinced they're the most practical, fun, and reliable rwd car for under 5k.

I'd love an 86 but they're so uncommon in the southeast. Even a single cam sr5 would be nice.

If you get an e30 go with a 325is or 318is. The 318is may get a little hate for not being a 6cyl but much less maintenance, lighter, better mpgs, and tossibility make up for it imho.

For what it's worth don't make the mistake I made and GET A SKIDPLATE for a 318is. The biggest flaw is a low sump. Mines slightly lowered on a bilstein/h&r combo and I busted the oil pan and now having to pay for a new motor.
>>
>>16234093
the E30 has he best bang for your buck and the best potential. from I4 to V8, that thing has it all.
the ae86 is a fucking meme, its good, but nowhere that good
and the ford sierra is a worse E30. the pinto engine has some turbo aftermarket though. still shit.

if these are your only choices that is.
if i lived in burgerland id just get a turd gen, plop in a big block, weld the diff and pull mad skidz. poly bushings obligatory.
>>
>>16234652
I already have an ae86 keep in mind I know and like how they drive, I'm just looking for something with a slightly bigger ceiling.

I've never been close to an 86 in person (passed an old man in a hatch on a highway in tennesse once...wish i had've busted a Uturn and followed that nigga to try and buy it) but I imagine theyre much smaller than an e30. Im short as fuck but have friends around 6'6 or so that fit fine ceiling height wise. They feel much more cramped riding shotgun. Post some pics of that 86!

Pic is my first e30, an 85 318i. Slow as piss but that motor took a fucking beating for 4 years then I sold it and got an iS (dont have a pic currently)
>>
>>16235145
I mean a ceiling for performance, Corollas are very expensive to make fast and get good power out of. I figure if I get an E30 I can just do a turbo M20 or M50 with some ground control coils and some poly bushings and have a car that will be 10x faster than my corolla for 1/3 of the price.
>>
>>16235453
If you want to go super cheap look into m30 swaps. 200hp right off the bat, they're cheap as hell, can be had for a couple hundred bucks and best part is they're fucking bullet proof. You could throw a different head gasket on it to lower comp and slap a turbo on it and it'll have more power than you need.

Without a turbo it would be super reliable, and extremely cheap and easy to maintain without the vanos crap, plus chain driven. Just something to consider.

I shelled out alot of cash to have the motor replaced in my 318iS cus I love it and in school and needed my daily back on the streets quickly or else I would go this route. M30 e30 is imho the best bang for the buck of any car/project you can do.
>>
>>16235513
I like the motor in the 318is' they are just pretty expensive where I live. What do you think of doing a super eta turbo vs just shelling our for an m30 and boosting that? The super eta seems pretty appealing because I can get everything to throw it together pretty cheap.

super eta's are nice, but rare. They only made a true super eta for one year, 1988 i believe. They used m30s from like the fucking 60s til the early 90s haha. They made regular 325e's from 85 til 88, and their lower comp makes them a good contender just like the super e.

Me personally? If i had the funds, time, and space for a project like you i would;
1: Pick up the cheapest, cleanest shell for <800
2: Snag an m30 and manual out of an e28 or early 90s 5 series (theyre much more common than m20s)
3. Add diff of your choice or if shell was a 6 banger keep it
4. slide that mother fucker in and you'll end up with something like the link below.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qcl8uzVhUMs&t=2s

They'res alot of good info on the swap. Heres a good start to get an idea of the parts/work

http://www.e30zone.net/e30zonewiki/index.php/Engine_Swap_-_M30

That same site has info for m50 swaps too if you wanted to compare. If you got a 325 with a blown motor you wouldn't have to source much.

I havn't researched much about boosting either motor. The m30 is a 3.5 liter and the m20 is 2.5 (2.7 for the E's)

Both are single cam 25 year old 6 cylinders, both are literally fucking bullet proof (ask me how i know) but m30 is chain driven and a liter larger so it has my overall vote.

Either way I think out of all your options e30 is by far the most tunable, reliable, and overall greater choice. dont listen too>>16235543

of course i am biased lol
>>
>>16235636
>most tunable, reliable, and greater blah blah
Its literally slower than a FWD corolla.
Far from reliable
And the only way to get power is from a turbo, which makes it less reliable.
Stop being a retarded fanboy
>>
>>16235636
Yeah I was leaning towards an E30 already. I love my 86 but I'm really itching for more power, I've got a semi worked over small port as is, I'd say maybe 170-180 HP and it feels real slow. My only option is to go FI or get a SR which I don't really wanna do, and it'll still be slower than a E30 or XR4Ti. E30s are pretty expensive where I live, it would definitely cost the most a shell is probably $2500 for a rust free one, then everything else. I've got around $7000 to play with though so none of them should really be a problem. I'll look into boosted M30s and price everything out, thanks for the advice though dude.
>>
>>16235695
E30 is slower than a stock ae86.
But who am i kidding. Youre an idiot who will buy one anyway
>>
>>16235802
It's a good thing I'm not going to keep the E30 stock, and a 6 cyl one isn't, I've driven both,
>>
>>16235650
Nigga daily a 30 year old car for 4.5 years then come back and tell me whats reliable.Yeah mine had the m10 and was slower than piss but i see ppl with 07 accords have trannies going out while im over here tryna stanley steam the pussy juice outta my passenger seat.

>FWD corolla
Id take a 90hp rwd corolla over a 2016 mommobile.

I aint tryna be that guy but theres nothing i love more than having a cheap slow 80s car i can redline and be going the speed limit in.

>>16235695
Sorry to hear they're expensive where you live. They seem like they almost doubled in price in the 5 years or so ive been driving them.

Where do you live? Like what state?

Sometimes the best way is to creep through older neighborhoods, places where the houses were made between 1960 and 1980ish and scout them out. If you live in a rural area its definatly harder to find. Where i live its the opposite. A nice sr5 is like 5 fucking grand, yet I passed up an 87 325es (that only needed a slave cylinder) for $500 a while back. My e30 bro in highschool paid 1500 for a nice running 325is.
>>
>>16235802
>>16235814
E30s had like 4 different motor options us.

Did stock 86s have over 170hp 130ftlbs torque?

e30s def way a little more tho
>>
>>16235860
I live in Canada, Corollas are still expensive but I have a lot of friends in the scene so I can get a shell for like $1500-$2000 and then just rob parts off of my car.
>>16235877
Yeah I was disagreeing, E30s are faster than 86s, the highest rated factory 4age had 130 hp, and that's in an AE92 not an 86
>>
E30 with M60 and boost. Do it, die happy.

>>
>>16235900
Canada eh? Man I would trade my shit for an 86 if i could haha. Im surprised the 86's there havn't turned to dust from the rust yet--I love em but damn those old yotas seem to rust like nothing else. Guess its the price you pay for being that lightweight.

Ya know e30s got an undercoating to help protect from rust? idk how normal that is but always thought that was a plus.

How hard would it be to import from US?
>>
>>16235931
Thats why I chose another 4banger e30. I snagged a mint 318is instead of an average m50/m20 car cus I dont trust myself with over 150 hp.

Drive a car with 101hp for four years, flooring it everytime you touch the gas and the muscle memory is hard to overcome. I'd die on the test drive

Yo that color is sick! very rare in the states
>>
the cheapest ae86 or e30 you can find in the best shape. either will have varying degrees of tax and rust. i'd honestly just get a ae86 because you already have one that you could use as a parts donor (or just fix up the current one you have) or just swap a SR/turbo 4age into it. its not like a e30 is some sort of speed demon either, and its also heavier (2500-2700lbs vs 2300lbs).

xr4tis are kinda shit. need too much work to actually be made decent. rear suspension geometry is fucky and leads to snap oversteer. next to no aftermarket and not getting any newer 1980s turbo cars that still run aren't going to have the best wiring either after 30 years of heat.

>>16235933
they still rust out pretty bad.
>>
>>16234093

If thats a xr4ti pass it up. Its not the real deal. Sierras and Escorts are awesome but thats not a substitution. Either of the other is a great choice.
