A classic is generally something at least 25 years old, with a special quality about it.

a little harder, it's based on the Isuzu pup, while the S10 has provisions for a 4.3 vortec which is just 3/4 of a 350 chevy.

84 F-150 died a couple weeks ago coming back from a camping trip. I had tuned it a long time ago and it ran great for 2 years. It just died out of the blue and wouldn't run. Just backfired through the carb. Checked out timing and it was dead on. Compression was low in a couple cylinders so I puled the head and brought it to a machine shop today. Hopefully I will hear back in a week. A water test last night showed leaks in on multiple valves so I'm hoping a cleaning and valve job makes it right again.
>>
Can one of you dudes help me out? I'm stranded right now.
I have an old Thriftpower 6 250CI and the carb isn't set right, keeps blowing gas out the carb before it dies on me, and it won't idle.
Any help would be much appreciated, my dudes.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but that sounds a little suspicious.
Here's a photo of the inside of the carb too, dude. It kind of looks like there's a clear piece in the way.
>>
>>16234497
Sorry, it's metallic rather. And it looks like the shutter that's supposed to be at the bottom of the carb. Is it supposed to be closed like this?
>>
>>16234513
Yes, that's your throttle.
>>
>>16234517
Gotcha, sorry for the stupid questions
>>
>>16234519
It's no problem. If that doesn't work then you'll prolly need a tow because you'll have to be digging into the carb.
>>
>>16234538
Anyways, last time it did something like this it turned out to be the air fuel mixture on the side, but I've been adjusting that for a good while with no progress. Could it be possible I'm flooding it or something? Any ideas on how to help me figure out how to set it?
>>
>>16234544
The idle adjustment screw and air mixture screws are out far enough where I can turn them with my fingers too.

Sorry for replying to myself to update, kind of stressed I guess
>>
>>16234544
>Could it be possible I'm flooding it or something? Any ideas on how to help me figure out how to set it?
No, it wouldn't even fire in that case. The fact that it's running when you're on the throttle means that it's getting a burnable mixture but it'll flood if you don't stay on the throttle.

Your float level may be too high or it's stuck open.
Did anyone work on the carb recently?

>Want to buy a classic car
>No bank/Credit union will give me a decent finance plan (10k on 36 month loan at BEST)
>Any car i like is way over priced or far as fuck
>Any car in my price range is shit or a drag car

I just want a highway cruiser thats cool looking, somewhat reliable, and not an 8mpg monster...

All novas are either built up or uglier later models

Mustangs are shit of boomers know what they got

Dream car gets horrible mpg in its most tame build combo (350/th350/2.73)

Current daily driver gets 13mpg, is falling apart, and i just dont want it anymore. I dont want to buy a 3k civic or anything built past 75 for that matter (fuck plastics, emissions, and electronics).

What do?
>>
>>16234568
They have not.
That trick you were talking about earlier, how can I unstick the bowl from the outside of the carb dude? Do I open the throttle and just push down?
>>
>>16234574
No you smack the float body with a hammer or something hard and it may be enough force to unstick the float from where it its.
If it doesn't work one or two times then don't do it again, carbs are soft metal.

>>16234571

four doors will always be cheaper, Mercury cougars will be cheaper than mustangs, etc.

>>
>>16234590
4 doors make it kind of hard to find a more "economical" muscle car (yes yes, i know. But 4 doors look ugly except for 60's versions, huge caddies, or impalas; which all go for a premium and they would suck majorly on gas)

>inb4 smiles over miles
my DD gets 13, maybe 14. Id like to at least get high teens on the highway, I6 mustangs interest me because you can actually get mid 20s from them.
>>
>>16234607
looks like it, if that's where the fuel lines goes.
Don't go Stone Cold Steve Austin on it but give it a decent smack.

>>16234609
Classics don't drink gas like you think they do.

Big blocks will manage 17-18 mpg because they're barely working to keep the car moving.
8mpg would be something you'd find like a blown, tuned big block.
You're not going to have your cake and eat it too.

> I6 mustangs interest me because you can actually get mid 20s from them
The unfortunate reality is that, while they can achieve 20's or so, you're going to be stomping on the gas to get any power and that'll drag your mpgs down considerably.
>>
>>16234639
Decided just to call a tow truck and drive something else till I get this figured out, dude.
I've had a lot of issues when it's come to carburetors, which is a shame because this motor has been running really well. But, is there a specific brand or carb you can recommend specifically for a 250 CI Falcon 6 motor? The dude who has been helping me out with my car has insisted on cheap crap but I'm tired of issues like this.
>>
>>16234885
Remanufactured carbs are shit that usually never works.
It's good to buy a carb and rebuild it yourself from a kit.
Not sure what carbs Fords use though.
>>
>>16234899

I started my own thread but I'll repost here for help too. Cars a 79 camaro with a 350

Well guys I'm about loosing my mind right now. I'm the guy who's carburetor was tampered with a few days ago (choke set spring and housing completely pulled out by someone) and drove it like that for about 10 days. The car was surging in throttle and rough idling and refusing to start without some heavy throttle

After finally getting time to work on it i saw the problem and I put it back into the Quadrajet and set it to where the car can easily start on cold mornings. Set the idle speed as best I could with a photo tachometer and (gauges broken) and set the air/fuel idle screws all the way in and then turned back 2.5 turns.

It runs more or less okay not as quick and snappy as it used to be but not knocking or anything. I changed the spark plugs too since they were a little crummy and it seems to run decently, the problem is im pulling 15 on the vacuum gauge from it. I heard that normal is like 25-30?

I'm freaking out guys what the fuck is wrong? I have a mild cam, a corvette intake manifold and a roller rocker valve job done and an accel super coil. does this affect the vacuum pressure?

Also, after I changed the plugs and set the air/idle and what not while the car was running, I shut it off for something and then it wouldn't start. I could hear the starter whirring as well as the flywheel so I'm assuming I wasn't getting spark. Could this all be my coil going bad? Please help dudes

Spray starting fluid around intake seals and see if the engine surges at all.
If it does, you have a leak.

My mom who was helping me find a car found a 77 Nova with under 80k miles for $4500. Going to check it out today.

As much as I like the idea of owning a classic, this one is automatic and I really want something with a stick shift. If I do end up liking it enough to buy it, how hard/feasible would a manual swap for it be? And how much would I be expecting to pay, on the higher side?
>>
>>16239283
>Under 80k miles
Doubt intensifies

Also it's not inherently complex to swap to manual, but it's difficult. Especially if it's your first car.

That being said, the automatic (th350) in these are pretty fun. The shifts are hard, not soft and dainty and it's fun to just mat it.

If it doesnt have any rust and is running alright, see if you can bring it to a mechanic for an inspection before you buy it for any glaring issues.

yeah I'm a little wary of that

This wont be my first car, I'm looking for something to replace my current shitbox thats on the verge of death and isnt worth fixing. Honestly I'm hoping it has something really wrong with it just so I have an excuse to not buy it that isn;t just "its automatic". It seems like everyone I talk to thinks I'm crazy for wanting a manual.
>>
>>16239868
I don't think you're crazy for wanting a manual, but if that's the case just get an old pickup or something.
>>
>>16239888
As much as I'd love to get an old pickup, I'm not really a big pickup fan. I do like some of the smaller trucks, but around here most trucks that aren't brand new or haven't been kept in a garage all their life are rusted to shit

>>16239892
Yeah I feel it. Just know you're looking to get a project as a daily driver. Usually, nothing catastrophic breaks on my car, but little things go here and there

That is totally fine, I'm hoping I get something like that, where little things go wrong so I can learn to work on my own cars. So far the only thing I've done with my car mechanically is top up the oil because it has a bad leak

perhaps the smogged out ones. but they were being phased out at that time anyway. If he finds a good long block from pre-emissions the heads flow fine, and the stock pistons made 9.5:1 compression. All he'd really need was a better flowing intake and a new cam. Both of those things would go a really long way, especially considering the cam advancements we've made since the 60s

Whichever you can get at the best price really, there's been some dyno tests between the rpm and air gap, usually a couple of horsepower if that at the top end, talking 6k or so rpm here.

For used, I wouldn't pay over 140ish or so and in perfect condition, new ones on summit are around $220.
>>
>>16232747
That's actually a "mistake deterrent" so someone in a hurry doesn't unstack those parts. If you want to rebuild your carb those screws need to come out to properly clean the carb body.

Tip:
Holleys which look similar vary widely over the years. Take them apart over a clean tray in bright light and take clear pics as you go for reference. This helps even if you've been doing them a long time.
>>
>>16234571
>I dont want to buy a 3k civic or anything built past 75 for that matter (fuck plastics, emissions, and electronics).

Stop being a pussy. A real mechanic can learn to work on anything. I grew up with that old shit and later vehicles are generally less hassle. Financing an old car indicates you can't buy one for cash. Never ever finance project vehicles and consider anything vintage a project vehicle unless it's a truck in good condition. Old trucks are quite viable.

Main ride should always be utilitarian and reliable. Playtoy should be second ride, and then you don't have to care about gas mileage. If you do have to care about mileage it's time to recalibrate your vehicle desires so you don't fuck up.

Get a reliable small truck to DD because you can haul tools and parts with them. Then accumulate playtoy money and buy toy. Do what mechanics do.

BTW if you want performance a shitbike can walk all over nearly any car on the street. Old cars are for looking at while masturbating. Motorcycles are the true kinesthetic rush. I ceased to care about cars many years ago.

A thirsty old car will keep you poor.
>>
>>16234975
If the paint is original do not fuck with it unless it's bad, then repaint it. Don't nig it up unless you are happy to ruin the value.

It IS fucking vintage. More vintage appeal to what, retarded hipsters who don't know what they are looking at?

I'd go over it thoroughly and inspect everything. Fresh hoses, fluids including differential lube and coolant, pull wheels and inspect brakes, and make sure everything is as good as it can be.
>>
>>16236472
An intake manifold is an answer to the question of what you want the vehicle to do.

You shouldn't just buy an intake. You should study intakes then buy an intake/carb combo suitable for how you REALLY drive your vehicle. Avoid the oversized carburetor trap.
>>
>>16237629
You should have plunged it into hot water, then blown it dry with compressed air, not air dried it.

Headers themselves free up 40 HP, not even shitting you, that's why every single 360/390FE pretty much has headers on it. Basically all you need is a better cam, headers and if the engine is old enough, an electronic ignition swap to get rid of points and condensor

Yes, if you're willing to put in the work, or pay to get it done if you're that kind of person, all you need is headers, an Edelbrock 4bbl Aluminum intake and a better than stock camshaft, that's an extra 60 Hp give or take right there

Alright then. That engine probably needs to come apart soon anyway, so might start replacing parts then...as noted earlier I THINK it came from a '69 car (I'll have to ask grandfather again) but has some bits on top that came from the 67 Mustang. I have a 1966 Ford shop manual (found it, I didn't just buy the wrong one) that tells how to tear down multiple types of engines; would there be any significant differences between those years?

So recently I've been sort of wanting to get a muscle car and heave been researching as to what I can find for a reasonable price. Mustang is by far the most common and easiest to get at a reasonable price but being more of a Mopar person I was pricing them as well, and it seems either a Road Runner or early Barracuda will fit the bill as well.

Then it occurred to me, AMC. It seems that most AMC muscle cars can be had at a reasonable price. So that leaves some pretty interesting options; Javelin, AMX, Rebel, Marlin, 1st gen Matador coupe.

As far as I know, there shouldn't really be any difference, but I am no expert.

Really my only advice is that when you get around to working on the engine, the rocker arms are all on a rail, they do not come of individually. When the time comes to remove them, find instructions on the pattern to remove the bolts, do NOT take them off willy nilly, then follow the torque procedure exactly, or you can damage the rocker arm rail. There is also one bolt on the rail that is slightly longer than the others, so keep track of where it comes out of
>>
>>16252428
But AMC comes with harder to get parts (usually), honestly if you can find a Ford or Mopar muscle car for a decent price, it would probably be the better choice

Question.

I want to get into classic cars and my dream car is an old classic mustang from the 60's

I see tons on the Internet some going for sub 8k with only a few ten thousand miles on it and others going for 90k+ with the same miles.

There must be something I'm not understanding, because I've been looking at 1967 mustangs and the prices are all over the place with no patterns I can see

I mean all of these I see have beautiful paint jobs and I doubt they have much mechanical problems because they have so few miles, what differentiates the 7k mustang from the 90k mustang

I know things like original parts could be associated with it but I'm not into whether or not the parts are original or new just that I can have the notoriety of driving a nice mustang

I asked my boss today about doing a rebuild and tune on AMC engines. He's done them before, both street and race tune, and still remembers what to do to and where to get parts. He seemed interested in the possibility of me getting a Javelin and redoing it.

I wonder what AMC's would look like today, like what would the design language be, would they still have the same style door handle?

Probably very similar to Subaru, near the end there were basically the American predecessor to Subaru's. AWD eagle range, small light SUV, and boring sedans.

My boss built some of the best race engines for dirt and asphalt modifieds back in the 80's, 90', and early 00's. Though he used Chevy small blocks for his race car, he built engines for everybody out of whatever they wanted. As well as just doing machine, rebuild, and tuning work on street and restoration cars. If I do this, he'll know just what to do to get a little more power. I don't need the added precision, cost, and unstreetable power of a full blown race engine.

5.3 tarbos seem like a nightmare to set up, I want to go the ez route with a 383 stroker but I feel like they would be dinosaurs eventually

I'm just kinda dipping my toes in the water again after being away from it all for awhile
>>
>>16259882
Which car?

With heads, and intake, a cam and exhaust those 5.3s can pump out well over 480 Na hp and that is only top end stuff. Seriously good motors, and the aluminum ones are pretty light compared to an old iron sbc
>>
>>16259940
Just my Chevelle, if I were to go that route I'd probably just do the iron block for cheapness, a lot of the shit is foreign to me, its no problem to learn I'm not a caveman or anything.

My original plan was to just get a good set of aluminum heads and then get the bottom end of a 383 with flat tops. I just want a light to light torque monster to fuck with desu.

I'm still strongly leaning for the 383, but I want to look at everything first and I know how crazy 5.3's can be
>>
>>16259711
Put a dab of no. 2 Permatex or Indian Head or whatever on the body or the nozzle, then put the gasket on there.
>>
>>16260003
Dollar for dollar, you'd be better off with a 383. If love to put an injected motor on the ferd but it's too much of a pain to have to plumb a high pressure fuel system, wire up an ecu and sensors and shit and make it work

You can always go with an msd ignition system and one of those plug and play tbi unit but they're pretty fucking expensive.
>>
>>16260197
What about a 6.0 LQ9?
>>
>>16260252
Would kick ass, those things can pump out some serious horsepower, but same issues. Putting an EFI motor into a car is a lot of work
>>
>>16260252
They're an awesome base actually, flat top pistons, injection, aluminum every thing and pretty good heads
>>
>>16260301
LQ is iron block senpai. It would probably be between the two, 383 stroker and a LQ9. LQ9 would be a complete overhaul, 383 just need the bottom end I'd be reusing everything else including heads

i want a 6 cylinder mustang

>>
>>16261410
>I just want reliability and the bodyshape. How much should i expect to pay?
They're pretty cheap because nobody wants a straight six mustang.
If you're willing to put in the work any straight six from this era can get V8 levels of power.
>>
>>16261415
but thats the thing, i dont care about performance but i like how easy the I6 is to work on because ive worked on them before with old AMC's and Chevy 250's

If i did care about performance, i would love to put a barra into one
>>
>>16261433
I'm going to tell you right now, doing 0 to 60 in more then 20 seconds looses its charm in a year
>>
>>16261464
i know exactly what its like because ive lived with a 1970's corolla for the last 5 years, and i really dont care about performance. I just want to know how much to spend for a 1960's I6 Mustang. Even a Mustang II with its I6 would be fine because im interested in the styling not the figures
>>
>>16261488
I don't know, 6k for a decent one?

You're going to do what you're going to do but the i6 is no more reliable and barely easier to work on than a 289 or 302
>>
>>16261488
Also mustang 2 literally a shit
>>
>>16261495
What about mileage? I know my 225 /6 gets poor milage, but what about the Ford strait 6? Or would that anon be better off getting a Windsor V-8 with narrow-primary 4v carb?
>>
>>16261531
Depends on how it's tuned. If you want decent mileage though, old carbed engines are not the way to go.
>>
>>16261052
But the idea is to keep it all AMC, hence the 401. This is plan C if I can't find a 390 Javelin or Rebel.
>>
>>16261498
The Mustang 2 is a better mustang than the 71-73s were
>>
>>16261498
>>16262342
suspension is actually about the only good thing about the mustang 2
>>
>>16262342
in what way
>>
>>16262398
The mustang was supposed to be a stylish, sporty compact to attract young buyers especially women. It shared almost everything with the Falcon. By 71-73 The mustang was pretty bloated. I have no problem with the 71-73 Mustangs as cars but as Mustangs they aren't exactly faithful to Lee Iacocca's vision.
>>
>>16262441
There was barely a market for compacts in 71-73 as evidenced by how massive compacts of that time were.
The Mustang also wasn't a muscle car but now it's the face of "muscle".
>>
>>16262441
Just to be clear the Mustang's growth started in 1967 but by 1971 it was basically as big as it was going to get in the first generation

Ah, didn't mean to put words in your mouth. Just heard it so much over the last summer.

Truth of the matter is, front and rear windshields need rust repair so they can be resealed to prevent further rust/damage/leaking, the rear bumper needs to be fixed, and I want all the body rust fixed. Doing this work without painting it will ruin the patina anyway. If there were no rust or body damage, I likely would have left it as is. She is a survivor and I'm ruining that, but I will have a car I love even more when it's done, and I'll have the photos and memories of before it was done as well.
