Thoughts? A lot of miles but body/interior look clean as hell and you could eat off that engine block (and yes I know they steam cleaned it, but still). Carfax looks fine.

Kinda overpriced tho for the mileage and you'll have to put some money aside for maintenance when something fails but i would offer less for it if i were you

the steering wheel and driver seat look all worn and the paint job looks like it would only be good in photos, it has some cool wheels but thats it, it's one major failure away from being a huge 5000 dollar mistake.

My GF bought a 2000 E46 coupe yesterday with the old reliable M43 4 cyl engine but today I was appalled when I realized that there is no dipstick?
What the actual fuck why would anyone remove it?
>>
>>16222157
Just a heads up from someone who dealt with the m43 enough: all gaskets are your enemies, especially the timing chain cover gaskets and head gasket. Other than that, good reliable choice when maintained correctly.
Also: check the rubber piping from the airflow sensor to the intake manifold, they always crack at the bending and suck in air.
>>
I have posted this before but I'm in for a new car next summer and I can't decide between e46 m3 and evo9.
E92 m3 would be nice but its 10k more and I don't want to spend that much on a car.
I have yet to test drive them but what do you lads think?
You can get so easy power out of evo for so little money it is tempting, m3 needs an sc. €€€.

There's a nice manual E36 being sold near me for less than $2k.

I need a car to commute about 20 minutes one way and probably about an hour back with some stop and go traffic. It has 220k miles.

Should I look further into it?
>>
My e46 320i is bucking back and forth violently if i even dare look at the clutch wrong when moving from a standstill or when i put the pedal down a bit too quickly and making clunking noises from the rear. It's as if some mount has gone but i dont know if it's the engine mounts, transmission mounts, or diff/subframe mounts. it's as if some rubber component is being stretched out and released when it happens. also, it's not the subframe being in tatters as I've checked it out and it looks good. Here's a pic of the car the day after I bought it.

Personally I wouldn't know because I have an e46 but still, any car of that age the milage takes its toll on every single rubber component on the car. you'd have to wait for a reply from someone else on this thread. I have been advised to stay away from an e36 with 200,000+ KMs on it before however
>>
>>16222308

Ah ok, well thanks for your input. I have a real life friend that is a 'BMW enthusiast' I guess that has been maintaining his own E30 for a while. When he saw this ad he showed it to me and has been lightly pushing me towards it. This is also convenient for me because the seller is within walking distance basically, and I wouldn't have to drive 30+ minutes to look at it. Of course that doesn't matter though if it just shits itself right when I get it.

Yeah people like to hate on US M3s because they go a fraction of a second slower to 60 while costing 2/3 the price and having 75-85% the horsepower. :)

I will give to the EUs that they have nice glass headlamps and foglamps that you don't have to rewire to not turn off when you put on the highs. But good luck with maintaining that engine!
>>
>>16227117
>But good luck with maintaining that engine

Are they really that bad? I know parts are expensive (even in the UK where BMW parts are cheap) thanks to the M tax, but if the other BMW I6s are anything to go by it should be fairly reliable and easy to work on no?

EU M3's engines were produced far less and were much more complex. Parts are more expensive, repairs are more expensive. US M3's engines are great for FI.

Now don't get me wrong, I'd love a EU M3 too, but the US ones really don't deserve the hate they get. Really it is all just autistic spouting.

That one guy on YouTube with a GT (facelift in the UK), I don't watch his videos but every thumbnail I see it is him stating how it is a mess and he is going under the bank's foot or whatnot. Not sure if that is the common case, but US M3 engines have been very reliable, on the other hand. Be more concerned about the transmission, because it seems people don't want to take care of them.

I have the same feels as well with mine. I'll tend to do reckless moves when driving mine but sadly one of those reckless moves was the last one and the one that killed the chassis. To me an E36 is the easiest car to get comfy driving but sadly I have to move on. It was fun while it lasted but I'm thinking I'll defect to a Toyota for a while, I'll go back to an E36 if I can find a clean one that I won't abuse.

I may rip the highways and backroads at times, but I am always courteous to let people merge and take turns and all that jazz. And then I am for sure straight in the neighbourhoods. Go the speed limit, stop at signs, etc.

Was snaking a new speedbump the other day though and then this guy tried to suicide in front of me with his three dogs yelling that I was the reason they were putting them in. Drove around the block and came back and talked to him when he was hopefully calmer. Soccer moms bust the roads at twice the speed limit in SUVs but I am going over a speedbump at 10 mph and I almost have to call the funeral home?

Just don't do shit near the populace and you are alright. People aren't always rational, though.

But yeah, if you have a loud car people seem to think you're going twice as fast as you are haha.

Just for you pic related

As for m3s the e30 went way up in price, e36 were half-assed by bmw because they didn't think it would sell well in the us but great cars for how cheap you can get one for, e46 have hit rock bottom and are going to go up in value in the future and only a 5 hp difference with the euro version and the e92 and newer models are still too pricey for most people

>>
>>16228028
If it sucks like a hooker when you remove the oil cap when the engine is running you need a new positive crank case ventilation valve (PCV)

If it smokes when left to idle you need new valve stem seals.

I have done both, neither is a nice job on the 4 cylinder engines.
Although mine wasn't drinking oil, just had the smoke thing and leaking oil from the bottom PCV hose.

Haha, it makes it sound worse than it is. The camber is natural to the coilovers, in fact the camber plates are untouched. Not street legal cause I just kissed my cats goodbye and I'm in the one state that is all fuckey. The dip is just to make the raw finished splitter match the rest of the ABS bits. And then I'm getting some tuning software to remove governor, increase limiter, etc.

But really, getting upset over something on here means you're pretty fucked. That guy must be trying to rack up his e-tokens and cash them in at the Channy Cheese.

Good when they work, but suffer from all the usual diesel issues. Turbos, injectors, dual mass flywheels / clutches depending on treatment, and DPFs are a fucking nightmare.

Just get a 330i. If you get even one of these issues you have wiped out your fuel savings, and get a much nicer engine. Diesels are good for cheap lease specials if you do loads of miles, not so much as a second hand ownership proposition

e39 m5 owner here. about to hit 108k. its definitely not great, so what you gotta do is if you buy one, obviously dont get one thats been in accidents, modded by some faggot kid, been driven in hard winters, etc. Also, helps if you can repair some things yourself. I've had to spend a few Gs on repairs I wasn't able to do, but honestly i dont even care because driving the car is so fucking awesome. if having to cough up some dough every once in awhile to drive my dream car is the price i have to pay, im more than fine with that. however, a lot of people would rather spend that money on other things. but because i dont have that many expenses, and besides my love for cars am extremely frugal, i dont give a fuck.

tl;dr if you love the car and can afford repairs every once in awhile, do it

Can the non-cancer people answer a question for me?

Is it worth getting a brand new M3 or buy a used one with a couple thousand KMs/Miles
>>
>>16243309

Personally I would get a nearly new one and let someone else take the depreciation hit. I am not too fussy with options, so as long as it was roughly the spec I was after I would go for it.

I would only go for a new one if there were certain options / colour combinations you absolutely had to have that hardly anyone specced.

I'm going to stop you right there and tell you there is rust so that when you eventually find it tucked away under the exhaust heat shield that runs down the firewall near the transmission or in the inside of the seams where the fender liners meet the radiator support or in the HVAC intake or around the AC line entry to the cabin or in the trunk near the tail lights you won't be too sad.

>>
>>16248859
ill help since these autistic middle aged cucks wont, theres a big difference in those body styles and at that pricepoint you can find a decent e46 theres no reason to look for a 36. Both burn oil though like most old bmws and I also assume that the 36 doesnt feel as comfy to drive.
>>
Im in europe and i just discovered that apparently e46 and up are badly made for the US market, is that true? LMAO

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04gTnckMaeo

I wanted to meme this guy cuz I own an e46 in europe and ive had NONE of the problems he mentions. But then i read up on it and apparently americucks just get shit bmws?
>>
>>16248859

2 litres as in the 1.9 4 pot pot? Or a 320i, which is a 2.2 I6?

The 4 cylinder engines in the E46 were pretty rubbish, the E36 ones were a lot more reliable. Can't go wrong with a 6 pot, just watch the cooling systems. Unless you are looking at something with the later M54 engine it should NOT use any oil at all.

As for 46 vs 36, both have rust issues so check that. Both great cars, I like my E46 as it is more comfortable and refined. A bit heavier so won't drive quite as well, but not much in it.
>>
>>16249106

Just watched it, he is so full of shit. For context, I have a 1999 E46 323i in the UK on 168k miles. Original clutch, gearbox, and engine. Owned since 2009 and 70k miles.

To be fair he has a point with the cooling system - I replaced all of mine last year as the radiator was bowed. Total cost for everything supplied and fitted at a local garage was £360.

Why anyone would take an E46 to a main dealer is beyond me. That is just stupid. They are not difficult to work on, plenty room to work and everything seems logical.

Either the American ones are badly made, or that particular one has been abused / crashed. Easily the worst E46 I have ever seen. Cooling system aside I have experienced none of these issues, nor have I seen one in that condition
>>
>>16249229
the interior was fucking TERRIBLE, how would it even get that bad? was it a fucking flood car or some shit? or just typical american maintenance?
>>
>>16249245

I have no idea, think you might be right with the flood thing. Either that or the glue the use must be total shit if they are all like that. Either way, I have NEVER seen one in the UK with an interior like that.

Also did he say $700 for a window regulator? It is a £20 part. That is insane.
>>
>>16249203
not him but looking for the same thing,

kinda sucks that. The 6 pot seems awfully thirsty.

" Fuel consumption (economy) - urban 12.2 l/100 km.
Fuel consumption (economy) - extra urban 6.9 l/100 km.
Fuel consumption (economy) - combined 8.9 l/100 km. "

seems kinda optimistic

Also what's the max mileage you lot would be comfortable with buying? Petrol of course.
>>
>>16249290
the 4cyl petrol engines consume almost the same fuel as 6cyls
source: i`ve owned 3 4cyl bmws
also mileage is not as important as the cars actual condition, since you`re looking at old e46's
>>
>>16249290

There isn't much of a difference to be honest, mine gets mid to low 30 mpg which is pretty much the same as my old 1.8 Mondeo got. Seen as high as 40 on a run, obviously it takes a hit when you do a lot of urban driving or hammer it. All 6cyl engines get the same economy.

Biggest issues are cooling system and rust, if both of these are fine then I would just go on the condition of the car itself. Engines and gearboxes don't give problems if serviced on time. Think the automatics can give issues, but don't know much about them. Maybe someone more knowledgeable than me could chime in on that
>>
>>16243618
yes it does, even an M7x V12 fits in there if you have mad fab skills.
>>
>>16249290

My personal experience is
>m52tub20 - 9.0/100km combined
>s54b32 - 9.2/100km combined

I guess the m52 is a bit on the thirsty side, and the s54 is relatively effective.

you mean an E46 engine (M54)? that is a common swap nowadays, because of the simplicity and reliability of the engine. Swap is very easy, there is tons of information on it online.
If you live in commiefornia getting it to pass smog legal would be a royal PITA, but not impossible.

>>
>>16226475
Regardless of this being bait, 335i, M240is and so on are great. Nobody is impressed by your $5000 E36 M3
>>
>>16249427
its just as easy to drop in a v8 into an e30 as it is an e46. BMWs have huge engine bays so there is a lot of room for modifications.
>>
>>16249438
this.
E90 335is are actually better cars than their M3 counterparts.
>>
>>16249445
That isnt true at all desu, the 335i is good and all specially for making power with a big turbo conversion but the chassis, suspension, transmission and overall options dont even compare to the e90 m3.

Also thinking of getting a 335i, but most have paddle shifters, anyone know how good they are? responsiveness etc

When I start to accelerate the car lose power sometimes at 3000 and sometimes at 4000 rpm. It is similar to rev limiter on petrol engines. It's like the fuel is cut for a split second and then it is supplied again. And the car refuse to rev more.

I am pretty sure they are reliable like the rest of the E38 range, main issues are the automatic gearbox (make sure the fluid is changed and budget for potential replacement) and the fuel tanks rusting.
