Look at the Pontiac Vibe GT. It has the failed Pontiac name association so people think it's a worthless GM turd and weird late 90s Vaporwave styling combined with a station wagon layout so bros think it's a chick car.
It's actually a Toyota Matrix, but more than that a factory sleeper version. 6 speed manual hooked to a 1.8l Toyota Corolla block with a head roided up by Lotus putting out ~180 HP. It's pretty light too so it goes like a rocket.
Best part is that you can find them for 3-5k all day erryday.
Also being a Toyota it can easily do 200-300k miles with normal maintenance.
Want more mileage? Base model. Slightly cheaper and the 1.8 still has variable timing giving surprisingly peppy performance. Not really fast per se, but enjoyable enough.

Also forgot, get the pre-2009 models. The later body style is literally worse at everything.
Also don't whine about it being a wagon. Everyone thinks wagons are gay until they actually own one for a month and then you never want to go back. They are just so useful.

Golf GTI's are plentiful, and as long as you take care of it you'll be fine. There are older Focus ST's you can get, Mazda 3 (2.5L w/ manual is like a 7 sec 0-60, bretty good)
I'd reccomend the GTI tho. Just beware of VAG maintenance, as long as you dont thrash the car and as long as you properly change fluids, you'll be fine. Just get the manual for it, not the DCT.

I am in the same boat but a 7k budget been looking for an acura tl or a ford fusion but it's hard to get one from a reputable shop on the budget
Corvette c5's are 10k these days and the LS1 actually gets good mileage for what it is
>>16212744
depending on where he lives he could get a turbo miata for that much and it's faster than whatever shitbox you drive

LS1 F-body

My miata is decently fast, its a MSM with a factory turbo. 178hp stock. Plus its really fun to drive and Miatas are know for their reliability. Although it would be at the top end of your budget and maybe a little bit more.

he'd be better off with a normal miata with an aftermarket turbo
MSM turbo setup is actually pretty fucking bad, especially the power band
there are ways to fix it though
