I just got my opens but have never actually owned a car, just driven around friends and family in their cars for fucking years because I live in the shitty.

Recommend me a decent first car for someone who's only driven taxi before? I've done some basic wrenching stuff like swapping out wheel hubs, general servicing, installing replacement parts from the wreckers and shit like that, nothing tricky like rebuilding engines or tuning some hectic turbo setup.

Wouldn't mind something I could do some DIY mod fuckery on, Doesn't matter if it has huge balls or not, but I've never driven a V8 and it sound deliciously appetizing, but I also like the look of old shitbox rwd corollas.

All the cars I've driven are around late 80s to early 00s (Toyotas and Subarus) and have all be manual, Ice checked the sticky but I'm not sure what car I should actually go for.

I've got about 20k to spare, but I don't think I should throw it all to my first car as I don't actually know what I like at the moment, is there a good balanced car out there that'll let me have a taste of everything that isn't a Commodore it Falcon? Just curious as to alternatives because that's probably what I'll end up getting (either a BA or a VE)

Theres so much out there and it's difficult everything has pros and cons.
toyotas are great and reliable but the tuner ones can be pricey, some subarus have shit five speed or unkillable six speed trans but the boxer engine is flawed, evo has a based engine but its unreliable and difficult to service.

Tuner cars (think all the jap mememobiles) are good because so much has been done with them before and there is tonnes of information, forums and resources to go to.

Lexus - ls400 is incredibly well made and designed, go for the facelifted one if you're getting one. Handles better than statesman/fairlane and engine is arguably smoother+better because OHC
GS300 is similar but harder to find in decent condition. Also only auto and n/a 2jz so its a bit of a let down. Theres usually someone who has a 2jzgte swapped in and manual @ 11-12k. Could also get a toyota aristo and its the same thing basically

Engine is back together, starts and runs, even went for a little drive to the servo to get fuel. Slight tap in the head which the engine shop owner thinks is an off clearance, doesn't sound serious at all and hasn't gotten worse in the time that it's been running.

But it's currently running a viscous fan that doesn't seem all that healthy, so I want to put an electronic thermo fan in. Either the heater core is blocked, or the heater valve doesn't respond to the slider, because I can't get any heater out of the vents. Haven't connected the PS system or AC compressor yet, and I need to fix a connection for the temp gauge which broke at the plug when I pulled it off when taking it all apart.

And hell yeah, regardless of whether it's done in a week or three weeks, I'd be keep for a night in the area.

Nah, all 4A-G's have solid valve-train bits, basically the cam sits directly over the top of a little bucket with a shim inside it. You change the clearance by changing the shim. Not really a big deal though, the shop should have the resources to machine a new one for me if necessary... I hope.
