You might as well mention that running the engine puts stress on the rod bearings and decreases their life. And that driving the car puts stress on the wheel bearings and suspension and decreases their lives. Oh yeah, and using the headlights puts stress on the bulbs and decreases their lives too.

The wear on the pressure plate from holding the clutch in at a stop light is insignificant. It's simply not even worth considering. The same goes for wear on the throw-out bearing. In the real world, it's not worth thinking about.

I've never heard of a manual car having a clutch that lasted as long as the car did. Unless it's a car that isn't maintained properly or has a design fault to begin with. A clutch should last a 100k miles or so. Maybe 200k. Most cars will go long after that.

Also I get very annoyed at my roommate, who waits for the light to change before shifting. The law says you must have control of your vehicle at all times. You'll fail a driving test for skidding around, locking the brakes for too large long, etc, because it's true: for those moments, you're not in control. Same with being on a public road, in neutral. At that current time, in that current state, you cannot control the placement of your vehicle in any way.

However, outside of the driving test, nobody cares, and most people use neutral at longer stops. For shorter stops I believe it's silly to use neutral (less than 5 or so seconds, for instance).

What I think is going on here is if you were to get rear ended when the light has just turned red, the guy behind you hitting you wasn't paying attention, but you still have a couple of crucial seconds in which you are in the intersection and can continue driving before the oncoming traffic from the other direction hasn't hit you yet.

you could just shift back into first? otherwise you're trading your clutch for sure for only something that might never even happen. I've been in gridlock situations before and even your stereotypical stupid american knows that if there's a sideways car in front of them, they can't just only pay attention to the green light and just go. Several things have to happen for this to benefit you all at once, you have to get rear ended at the perfect time, and you'd also have to have someone else in the other direction going too fast to stop.
