How high do you rev up your engine before shifting gears /o/?

I usually rev to 3000rpm then shift gears but i recently drove an automatic car and noticed the auto tranny shifts like at 2200 always so it got me thinking

Is 3k rpm to high to shift? should i be shifting sooner?

1.8T vw engine btw
>>
>>16204207
>not even getting into boost
Sure, if you're going purely for empeegees. MakeRev it out properly from time to time though, that redline isn't set as high as it is for nothing.
>>
I dont even pay attention to rpms or speed
>>
>>16204207
Unless you drive a diesel, there's nothing at all wrong with shifting at higher revs. You'll just use a little bit more fuel.
>>
Usually about 4,000 rpm on my 2001 prelude
>>
>>16204207

First things first, 1.8T VW a shit.

Second, it depends on how you're driving. Are you just commuting? Do you want a smooth ride for your passengers? Are you after MAX POWER MAX POWER MAXIMUM AND HIGHER? What are the characteristics of your engine?

In general terms, you want to shift early but not too early when driving normally: you wan't to use the least amount of throttle possible. 3k is fine on most engines. If you shift too early, you'll bog down the engine and will need more throttle to keep it moving, wasting gas. When you're going for performance, you should shift as late as possible but not too late because most engines stop making top power after certain RPMs even though their redline is higher than that point. Your engine has a teeny-weeny turbo so it makes it's power very early, so you should shift before redline.
>>
>>16204207
I daily that same engine. 3k is what I do too.
>>
>>16204207
2-3k for economy
redline for performance
really this should be common sense
>>
>>16204213
I second this. In the city I just shift when I feel like shifting. Hell, my actual car doesn't even have a tachometer. If I'm in a hurry or in a situation with constant stop and go and switch lanes, I shift at high rpm. Otherwise, i shift when I just feel like that.

Serious question: what advantage or disadvantage do I have when I shift even before the 2k mark with a 1,6l benzin VW? I find it quite entertaining when I see myself starting quicker off the red light than others while not exceeding 2k. And it's somewhat challenging too.
>>
>>16204207
Depends on what gear I'm in and what car I'm driving

My first and Second can get pretty high on the rev range, before I shift.
>>
until it sounds right and then i change gear?

that feel when barely having to press clutch at gear change.

...or am i not understanding something?

Redline every gear, as is my right as an American citizen.
>>
>>16205080
I redline it down every single onramp. It's the only time I actually get to use the fuckin gas pedal.
>>
>>16204207

What's even the point of the upper rev. scale anyway?

I change between 2-3, even when on the motorway it stays low.
>>
>>16204207
I shift right before red line.

If I can remember correctly, some engines benefit from a 2-3 rev area where some engines are more beneficial from keeping it under 2000. It kinda depends on the re-gearing from the automatic and the ratios from there.

Not sure about under 1500, though.

How high should you rev in 1st gear? It always seems like you stop getting power much earlier in 1st, and the car raises up so high you will lose traction.

I shift at 5k.

FD/13b hates low RPM, it feels like it's broken.

At least at 5k it gets to have a little bit of fun.
>>
>>16206555
Maybe if your fwd. the weight transfer helps a bit for rwd but any decently hp car will spin in 1st unless you are running good tire.
>>
3k,

Under that and it'll lug in the next gear.

2.0L
>>
>>16205594
How fast are you letting off the clutch? Also are you giving it the proper amount of gas?
>>
>>16204207
All previous answers are wrong.

This depends entirely on the hp your car makes, your power band, and your gearing.

So essentially it's different for each car.
So there's really not much point in asking.
>>
>>16206595
>fwd
That explains it
>>
>>16206615
Not WRX guy, but my car has rev hang and when its cold, holy shit so jerky. le clutch out super slow.

Mt-82 a shit
>>
>>16204207
Does any one blip the throttle between shifts?
Car is around 2500, bike is around 5k around town.
I clutch less shift a lot on the bike, but some mates reckon you should always try rev match by blipping on up and down changes
>>
>>16206819
Guess that makes sense, the only time I ever have a jerky shift in mine is if I pop off the clutch too fast or don't give it enough gas so it'll fall flat on its face.
example
>going 4-5k rpms
>shift but only give it a little gas
>car jerks hard and falls flat to 2k rpms
>>
>>16206889
Rev matching isn't really necessary with modern cars/trans. I'll typically just downshift and left off the clutch with a bit of gas like an upshift and it works fine, no sudden jerk or problems. Or when going around a turn after slowing down pop it in second give it some gas and all good
>>
>>16206889
On downshifts yes. I know my car has a lot of engine braking compared to the couple other cars I've driven (v8 vs i4) so unless I'm braking hard I have to blip it.
Upshift blipping? I'm confused
>>
>>16204207
Redline, every other mode is pussy.
>>
The "right" shift-timing depends on many factors - engine type (especially its power band), driving conditions, wanted outcome (max. acceleration, max. economy, max. torque etc.). I personally try to shift in a manner that never lets the rpm drop below the max. torque value (in my case 2.000 rpm which will give me 403 Nm) but it highly depends on the situation. In practice that translates to 2.500-3.500 rpm for up shifting and 2.000-900 rpm for down shifting, but those are just estimates as I'm rarely looking at the dial while shifting.

This. But downshifting without clutch makes the smoothest shift you can possibly have. Remember to git gud, tho.

Daily reminder that unfiring cylinders from some chebby engines require warmup when it's colder than 0 outside! Keep it running below 4000 until you see the temperature gauge peak up a bit.

>How high do you rev up your engine before shifting gears /o/?
Depends
>work van (2.0 TDI) alone
3-4k rpm
>work van with co-worker
2.5-3k rpm

>car (1.4 tfsi) alone
4-5k rpm
>car with other people
3-4k rpm

>bike (1130cc twin) commuting
3-4k rpm
>bike in twisties
5k+ rpm (rev limiter is 7.5k, near it is not uncommon)
>>
>>16204207
Depends on engine load. Sometimes i shift into 5th going 30mph just cause im coasting. Sometimes ill do 70 in 3rd to merge on the highway.

You're confusing "needing" with "wanting".
Also revving your engine out from time to time helps keep it clean.

regular commuting to school i'll shift at 2k +/- 100rpm. even cruising on the highway doing 80mph I'm at just over 3k rpm.

If I'm driving like a dick i'll usually shift >6k even though redline is 7k. I haven't seen dat shift light in ages.

pic unrelated

mazda 626 1.8 100hp coolant warmer of an engine

>shift at 2.5k rpm 99% of time

when I run it on LPG there is basically no difference in power after 2.2 k rpm. its just shit.
when i use petrol then there is some grunt when i floor it.

>why drive such a slow as shit car anon-desu?

because fuel is expensive, and 3.5 euro average per 100km is hella cheap in yurop. the car alone costs around 1k euro. no contest cheaper than public transport. also has a/c.
>>
>>16204226
You are a fuckwit.

You always rev to redline becuase you want to drop back into the powerband after shifting and you want to make the best use of the added wheel torque from using a lower gear.

As for hypermiling, you are wasting fuel any time you are accelerating, so you want it over as fast as possible without going overboard or hitting boost. On most economy cars this is 75% throttle and shift at around 3k. Acceleration should be brisk.
>>
2k to 2.5k. Cant take it too far aveo's timing belt will go boom if not
>>
>>16206587
I drove my mates fd and it seemed easy enough to shift at 3. It took iron will though as it gets pretty damn fun pretty fast once the little turbo spools
