My uneducated guess is that it's unpredictable. And that you're fooling yourself into thinking "LE 4WD BEST QUATTRO AUDI GROUP B MEMES" if you have a haldex based AWD car.
>>16202037
It is if you have a very light car and try going uphill but for most other applications RWD is fine in snow. Source: own E36, survived winter
>>
AWD is not about skids you fucking autist niggers. Its about grip, and the best grip comes from the front wheels unless your engine is in the back.
>>
>>16202037
My miata with an LSD and blizzaks rips in the snow. The only bad part is the ride height, but other than that it's great in the snow. You just have to steer with the throttle, it's pretty fun.
>>
>>16202125
AWD is too heavy, there isn't enough benefit to make it worth it, at least on asphalt.
>>
>>16202125
>no ability to steer with the throttle
>significantly increased weight
>doing hard launches destroys gearbox
>doing handbrake turns destroys differentials
>only benefit is a slight increase in corner exit traction
Sure seems worth it.
>>
>>16202139
Have you ever driven anything with awd? have you ever spoken to someone who has ever won something of significance within car racing? have you ever anything? This was a bunch of benchracing shit.
>>
>>16202144
Literally every car I've ever owned has been AWD, not everyone lives in Florida dude.
>>
>>16201944
> Acceptable tier: permanent 50:50 AWD

Retard alert. 50:50 AWD makes the car unable to fucking turn you moron. A car with 50:50 AWD like old pickups will literally refuse to budge once you turn the wheel enough.
>>
>>16202146
I don't think you understood, and I sure dont live in Florida. I've never owned anything except AWD. While i don't like haldex and other FWD based AWD systems, they sure are way better than rear wheel drive based AWD systems.

Hmmmmmmmm, truly thought provoking.
>>
>>16202148
Retard Alert. 50:50 AWD doesn't mean what you think it means.
Audi Quattros, Mistubishi Evos and Impreza Turbos all used 50:50 torque splits.

That's the point you clown, but VAG supercars like the R8, Huracan and Aventador use the system reversed.

So all Audi Quattros?

Do they even make proper AWDs anymore?
>>
>>16202022

No they don't. They use 50-50 at best.

>>16202238
Yes, but in fact they won't starting next year.
The only haldex quattro Audis up until this year were the VW A platform Audis - A3 and TT. Appearently in 2017 quattro on the rest of platforms (apart from D I think) is being replaced with "ultra-quattro" which is a haldex based system.
http://www.awdwiki.com/en/home/
>>
>>16202222
Visco and haldex arent the same thing
>>
>>16202409
Yeah, Haldex is better
>>
>>16202365
S and RS models will still use a Torsen-based system, supposedly.
>>
>>16202445
that won't last long. it will be deemed uneconomic to have two different systems after a couple of years. and the next gen "ultra" system will be deemed so good torsen is unnecessary.
happens every time
>>
>>16202455
They'll probably go full "e-Quattro" in a few years anyway.
>>
I'm just going to leave this FWD Ragnotti here.

>>
>>16202500
>One off example
Oh, absolutely. It's not like thousands of FWD cars have been fielded in rallies and touring car races and spec races and hill climbs and what not.
>>
>>16202485
why is watching this so satisfying? i'm not even a car guy desu

damn
>>
>>16201975
Because if you're having to deal with FWD-tier grip, you might as well profit from FWD's advantages: packaging and weight. FWD-based on demand AWD has neither of those two: it's heavy and packages worse than conventional RWD.
>>
>>16202022
They use FWD-based, RWD-biased systems, not FWD-based, FWD-biased systems. Also, unlike Haldex-type garbage, they aren't on demand (only when slip occurs): they're always engaged.

>>16202023
>Implying it doesn't
>>
>>16202125
>he best grip comes from the front wheels
This only happens in static situations. Unfortunately for you, automotive design means dynamic situations, so there's weight shift in the direction of movement. This weight shift transfers weight rearward in automotive purposes, therefore creating optimal grip at the back.
>>
>>16202212
Lamborghini uses Torsen, VW uses Haldex. Learn the difference.
>>
>>16202125
Are you fucking stupid? When you accelerate the weight shifts to the rear, therefore giving you more rear grip and actually LESS front grip.

But he's right. Shit, welded is better than open imo
>>
>>16201944
You've left out Subaru style front bias AWD why?
It's not 50:50 or on demand.
>>
>>16203836
Subaru AWD systems come in alot of different flavors (F/R):
>Manual 50/50 systems that go up to 20/80 or 80/20 in slip
>Automatic 90/10 systems that proactively become up to 60/40
>Automatic 90/10 systems that proactively become up to 60/40
>Clutch-type center diff with 45/55 normal torque split (36/64 in SVX)

Most of the WRX/STI cars are equipped with a 50/50 system that can shift torque rearward either from user input or slippage. This is massively different from Haldex type systems that are basically 100/0 untill slippage.
