The W163 was, just like its successors, built at the Mercedes plant Tuscaloosa in Vance, AL. The engagement in Alabama goes back beyond Chrysler's fusion with Mercedes-Benz. The models built in the Tuscaloosa plant displayed previously unknown quality issues, which nullified the savings from lower production costs. This led to a model update as early as 1998. Because of the high demand of the model and the quality issues during early production, small numbers of it were also built at Steyr-Puch in Graz, Austria. These cars weren't error free either, but considerably better than their American built counterparts. Only with the model update in 2002 was the American production able to reach the same quality level as those produced in Austria.
