If I am not mistaken those are tig ol bitties .
How do I get them on the van?
>>
My grandpaw had an old conversion van. It's an 80s model dodge that I'm gonna try to buy of of him. He already built a bed for it. We used to take it to the lake for camping in while we fished. I'd rather it stay in the family and he's getting so old and senile no one really wants him driving. Anyways what do you guys think is better to put the extra battery storage under the bed in the back of the van or along the sides and distribute the weight evenly on both sides? Also should I try to get an upgraded alternator or just go with a generator to supplement solar when I'm camping.
>>
>>16178633
Daily reminder this is not OPs van.
>>
>>16179715
I'd settle for getting them in the van.
>>
just the other day saw a NCV3 Sprinter low roof with one of those shitty aftermarket fiberglass tops.

What's the fucking point when you can literally just order a Sprinter with the high roof straight from the factory? Or buy a used one with it?
>>
>>16179782
Dual alternators and distribute the weight over the rear axle.

My 220AH AGM batteries weigh 120lbs each.

Solar is a great idea but it isn't really practical during the summer. It gets way to hot inside the van to make use of the solar. Not enough daylight hours during spring / fall for the panels.. I removed my panel and turned it into overhead storage.

You'll find you don't really use a lot of electricity unless you're running a fridge and a full size desktop pc.

Spend the money and get a DC fridge if you want a fridge.

There are people who live in their prius. Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

>>16178045

2operator4innacity. If you could innawoods dwell that would be awesome though.

>>16178083

I feel it. I have a shared place and it is still 800. What a waste of money. When I thought of what I could buy with that kind of money every month, I became angry, and hence vanlife. But one good thing about commiefornia is the weather is mild year-round. Go for it. In commiefornia, it's actually a huge part of surf culture to live innavan, and the entire bay area is notorious for them. Well who can blame them? You have people asking if a 120k salary is enough to live on in the bay area... It's ridiculous. Thank god I don't live there. Although if you did, you would get paid the higher salary, live in the van for nearly nothing, and rake in a fortune. Good deal if you can get it.

>>16178175

Nice. I paid a small premium to get an ex govt vehicle because of the great maintenance. Interior was spotless, too. Post your route.

>>16181092

Is it autism to not like the lifted bed platforms? You have less headroom, can't even sit up sometimes, and instead of being snug against some solid metal, you're at window level. Feels less comfy imo. They do it for storage space, but I'd rather just have less stuff to begin with.

I don't get how two people can share a van. For one it's a bedroom on wheels, but I feel like two people and two people's worth of crap is a lot to cram in there.
>>
>>16179300

I felt this. They would put 280 as the mileage and mean 280000. Or put $1 as the price and it would actually be like 300 a month lease (but they never said the total price.) Do people fall for this kikery? Or hell, I got one scam...messaged guy about a van, he said his mom was selling it and to email her, so I do and it's some cockamamie scheme she wants me to use amazon services to buy it from her, sounds fishy so I search the net, amazon doesn't even sell cars or help people sell cars and were warning about this scam going around. Messaged her back saying we could meet IRL, I could test drive it, and buy in cash, but I'm not using amazon payment service. No reply. Probably some nigerian scammer.

Every section of craigslist is infested with scammers. And yet it's less awful than some websites which are full out just scammers. And they always got some sob story. Single moms who want you to gibs them stuff for free, or someone who is deaf and can't leave the house for some retard reason, or some woman who is scared to meet to sell the product irl. Like nah, ain't fooling me.

Sounds fun. Except for the carpet. If your making it for off road work why would you put in the carpet. Cover the floor in bed liner or tractor paint. Something tough. Then use a rug. That way when it gets muddy you just pull the rug out and wash it Instead of having to steam clean your carpet. It's what all the off road guys do around here.

From what I understand, Ford E150/250/350 vans are based on the Ford F series pick ups, frames and engines, etc.

Will kits meant for the F series trucks work for the E series vans? Like lift kits and 4x4 kits?

I'm absolutely enamored with off road vans and want to build my own. Delicas aren't exactly common here, so I'm looking at taking something common and building it up to fit my needs.

Currently looking at E250s for that sweet diesel.

I don't understand how that is supposed to save space... Isn't the additional space needed for dividers and drawer bearings going to trivialize any space savings? >>
>>16211355

Let me just start by saying that PV panels won't work if there is even a little bit of shade on them. They need full sun.

I have self installed grid tied solar system on my roof. I sell excess to the power co and haven't paid a single gas, water, or electric bill since.

PV Panels require a battery system to store power. They're not meant power something directly.

Weather you should go for Solar or a Generator depends on how much power you'll be using.

If you run high draw things occasionally, a 2 panel 500w system plus a set of batteries will do fine. It will take up your whole roof though.
You can pretty much run a computer all day.

A typical $500 6hp Cingchong generator can output 3000w continuously at idle. You'd need to spend over $4000 for 15 panel solar system to get that same continuous power. And thats on a perfect day.

The cheapest way to run something in a forest with tree cover is a diesel generator using waste oil as fuel.

You either suck at problem solving or just enjoy making up excuses.

What does it matter where your dad lives? Your van is mobile, remember? Thats the whole point.

You can crash at Walmart if you want. Sleep in the van and work on it at the same time.
>>
>>16214547
True. I overthink shit sometimes.
>>
I really like the thought of this but I'm too much of a pussy to commit to moving into a van.

You think you are badass but I bet the neet anon could kick the shit out of you if it came down to it.
In the end he would feel like he lost the fight while you lay bloody on the floor.
Some anons dont know their own power and I hope he finds his.
>>
>>16214884
I wish that was the case. I really do.

Surround yourself around military guys in the bar. It's all about how much lightweight beer they can drink while making fart jokes. None of them look like they'd be able to stick to starting strength, let alone make progress. They consider cardio challenging.

I give the anon credit for trying to change his life, but he could've chosen a skilled trade or community college. He'd be better off.

I have little respect for those in the military looking for an easy ride in life.

Dodge grand caravan. It's ... what I could get. Shame about the odyssey being affected by transmission problems in all the years I could afford. Siennas are cool but there were simply none available, they're also a bit smaller.

Main draw is you can park it absolutely anywhere and no one is the wiser. However downside is it's nigh impossible to insulate well or convert due to the curves and stupid little panels everywhere. Also less space than a true van. But I don't find those too much a problem. I did diagrams and all my stuff should fit.

What I find really neat is that the space the seats fold down into, when you remove the seats, it becomes a coldsink. All the cold air goes down there and you stay toasty warm. When summer hits I'll take the stuff I'm storing there, buy a rooftop sports box, and put the shit there. Then use the coldsinks to store stuff that ought not get 120 F. What I'm fearing for summer is that all my duct tape will start coming apart, so I'm using a redundant second adhesive where I can. Starting to think Winter will be the easier season.

Anyway black friday is fucking my plans up. Fucking consumer pigs. Traffic is too much a nightmare to bother just to go fetch some cardboard and materials. Hopefully the shopping mobs fuck off for tomorrow and I can finish this out.

>>16214334

Get a fucking job.

>>16214511

Why buy the SUV rather than just going van from the beginning? You can find conversion vans under 3k.

>>16214734

A lot of military guys do this. They don't want to pay rent on a place they're gone from for months at a time.
>>
>>16218073
Yeah, but convertion vans are either 1 of 2 things
>old with 300,000+ mi for about 3-5k
or
>New and beaitful for 16k+
I'd rather get a 4x4 SUV (4x4 is important to me) and buy a van after i graduate.
I don't need much space, i just need an SUV
but would you mind taking a crack at my previous question
>>16214511
>>

hella people get their old conversion vans for likw 1500bux. they sit in a lot of peoples garage and collect dust becuase theyre gas guzzlers. probably a good chance all rubber the seals are dried up
>>
>>16218450
There's no such thing as a 4v4 van for less than 3-5k that has less than 300k miles on it.
All 4v4 vans prior to the ford transit and mercedes sprinters from 2015+ are just that CONVERTED vans, which means they cost a lot to make 4x4... like 9k+
>>
>>16218390

I'm gonna get a ups box. If anyone asks I'll say it's because hobos kept getting into my mail. I'm moving out of my apartment and just not changing any of my address info, just mailing address I guess. The post office redirects your mail for you although that's supposed to be temporary. I'll just renew it a few times. There's a ton of options for mail services. I'm just gonna go with ups, it's kind of the fuck it option. Plus I'm in one city for the time being. "digital nomad" mail services.

>>16218356

Yeah I guess. Idk about SUVs, read the sticky.
>>
>>16218356
>4x4 is important to me
Why?
>>
>>16218726
Small story time.
Dad has ankle bracelet
after 3 yrs it comes off this august
want to take him fishing with me out in the boonies
want to go up and down small coastal outlets surfing
want to go hiking alone
need 4x4 for mountains
also, gonna go up north soon so i need it for snow weather
so your thoughts on the original question
>>
>>16218748
>for snow weather
No, no you don't.

>after I graduate
Spend some time driving in snow for a few years. 4x4 will get you into more trouble than it'll help you out of if you're inexperienced.

Mountains, maybe. Ground clearance probably will play a bigger role than 4x4 there.
>>
>>16218764
what does it matter what i want it for
can i just get an answer to the question?
>>
>>16218782
Because you want a 4x4 suv for 3k. You're not even considering cheap junk SUVs like the s10 blazer or the Ford Explorer.

Any decent 4runner or exercusion 4x4 won't be listed for under 3k. Rotted and in need of repair, sure.

You're being unrealistic.

can it even get more pathetic than this thread?
>>
>>16218764
>for snow weather
>No, no you don't.

Depends, really.

An empty 2WD pickup truck with all seasons or summers won't be getting much of anywhere if there's a few inches of wet, heavy snow on the ground.

Same truck with good winter tires and 400 lbs of weight over the rear axle will get around just fine.

There have been maybe half a dozen times where I've actually needed and used 4x4 in a truck with an empty bed. All of them were with snow on the ground, trying to go uphill from a dead stop on the hill.

99% of the time, 4x4 is an expensive, useless option. But when you need it, it's nice to have.

The only weak point is the transmission.

The good news is you get the transmission rebuilt for pretty cheap.
Keep it under 70mph and you can get almost 19mpg.

Update: I'm saying fuck it to the ceiling insulation. I just can't fucking get this shit to work. And if there's gonna be gaps anyway why fucking bother? I'm also thinking it will fall the fuck down, and what if that happens while I am driving, it would be a dick. And I think it will destroy the headliner, but really it's just a bitch and a fucking half. I'll try to make a sleeping "tent" with a blanket held about a foot over my face, that should work well and be easier than this dicking ceiling insulation. I'm just gonna repurpose the foam sheet for something else, maybe in the floor or more for the windows. Fuck this. I also don't know if it would help or hurt me for summers and it would just look like shit.

Since that was also the bulk of the workload I can get this shit done faster.

Gonna make a trip for cardboard on monday when the fucking holiday shoppers are gone.

Regarding temperature, I'm just going to use warm bedding and acclimation. There's a reason texans are grabbing a winter coat at 50 F while russians are still in T-shirts. So it gets to the teens and maybe less at night here but I can deal with it, I've done that in a tent with shitty gear and didn't die. And I'm not gonna be heating the van so what does insulation help?

>>16223320
>Yes i want to sit in van.

Well...alright, man, you do you. I just think it would feel cramped but hey whatever.

You have to remove the headliner and toss it inna trash.
Then cut the foam to be a press fit in the spaces left.
Then you cut thin plywood to screw into the support ribs to cover the insulation.
No glue is involved.
Did you do any research at all?
>>
>>16224027

>>
>>16211355

yes i can redpill you

do your research.
make your own panel from a brand called "sunpower"
buy the individual cells on ebay. make sure they are genuine, they come from china so you need to be sure

then research power storage with 18650 cells.
everything for solar is geared for 12v
so the best setup i can recommend would be having a 35 amp hour SLA battery which charges banks of 18650 batteries via dc step down such as one of those quality 5v 2a cigarette lighter chargers on amazon

How can you convert it into 4wd when it already is?

Anon, that's pretty cool... they're so expensive, though.

This makes me wonder if its better to be a tall hamplanet or a thin manlet.
>>
>>16238157
Def a tall fatso. I'm 196cm so pretty tall myself but the other day I saw a dude in the grocery store that was a head and shoulders taller than me, so fat he was huffing and puffing just walking down the aisles, probably 300kg+ and looked angry as hell. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a tad intimidated by his presence and well aware of my escape routes at all times.
And losing weight is easier than losing manletisism

How is having an intimidating presence a good thing?
>>
>>16238249
People take you seriously

Lift it.

In a junkyard maybe.
IRL social status is far more important than size.
At 400 pounds it would pretty tough to get a nice suit to fit right so if anything it would be a burden.
>>
>>16238660
Depends on where the 400 is distributed. Height and perceived strength are useful anywhere if combined with social skills, but they deter the stupid which a suit does not do.

People subconsciously fear what can hurt them.

Deter the stupid from what?

From interfering with you or worse. People are beasts to be manipulated. They tend to avoid larger beasts or defer to them. Couple size with careful assertiveness and it's persuasive even with people in academic settings. Have whatever alpha traits you can manage, use them wisely, and it's all win.

For example I want what I want. I don't give a shit about others but they exist and must be usefully interacted with to get me what I want. I must give them some of what they want, convince some to want some of what I want, and so forth. The military have a term called command presence. That works well but even better if one is not a manlet.

I think you way overestimate the benefits of a large corporeal presence.
Sure you will find evidence here and there to back up this idea , but only when combined with a large dose of confirmation bias can you weave this into a world view.
>>
>>16239541
Consider this, a manlet black man or mexican with tattoos and an angry demeanor is far more intimidating than a huge white man.
Even a black woman can be far more trouble.
These people have nothing to lose.
In my experience large white men generally very docile. Nothing to fear from them.
I suppose a large white man who was clearly a criminal of some sort might be different but I dont seem to meet up with people like that very often.
>>
>>16239685
The reason you perceive them as docile is because they don't need to assert their power level to every person they meet.
You know a guy is a walking bulldozer just by looking at him. There is no action required on his part for you to realize this.

The opposite of this being manlets with small dog syndrome.
