I had a similar problem in my 95 s10 but the a/c never worked. I was told to replace the thermostat. Is that retarded? Will it fix it?

But your car should have a temp gauge so that should be an easy diagnosis.

Assuming no air pockets in the cooling system then the heater core is clogged. Happens all the time on older vehicles. Audi's are a bit more likely to develop clogged cores and radiators because they like to use turbulators in the tubes to improve efficiency but that comes at the cost of easier blockage as they age. Sometimes aggressive backflushing will open the core back up but most of the time they need to be replaced.
