Compression?

COMPRESSION!
>>
>>16111439
When I was in 5th grade my family moved to Queensland. 6 months later we moved back.

We all fukken hated it. Massive spiders and snakes randomly appearing. All the kids at school were weird as fuck. All running to the small grassed area to run around like robots, not even playing any game. No one had any personality it was seriously strange
>>
>>16110039
But the ls1 only makes 300hp and needs shit load of money to make more power
Barra has lshit beat
>>
>>16111529
How would I check that, mate? you can't get a proper compression reading by turning it by hand
>>
>>16111601
Stick your finger in the spark plug hole and turn it over and it will push air if its got compression
>>
>>16111626
>proper compression reading
Doing that is only going to tell me if it can compress, not if it has good compression

kek'd. come back when you can pass a test cunt
>>
>>16111881
And if it pushes your finger out then that too isn't an indication that it has enough compression to drive properly, sounds like a good little trick to know if an engine is completely fucked or not but it won't get you very far

It's a neat trick my uncle taught me when I blew up my engine. It's probably not useful if it has low compression lol.

How do apprenticeships work? I was applying for a jerb at my local butchers and he offered to consider hiring me for an apprenticeship as well.
>>
>>16112334
Not sure about butcher but you basically work and learn the trade from your employer for 4 years before you graduate and are considered fully qualified

You go to TAFE for 1 week a month paid I'm pretty sure, to learn your trade and the rest is learnt working on the job, not sure if butchers do it differently

Yeah mate theyre sick. I personally prefer the forester, I have a 2001, because of their higher clearance and better off roading. I think the forester also has low gear mode whereas maybe the outback doesn't (mlow gear is dope). The length of the Outback is great though so depends on what you're after.

What do you guys like? Grumby V8 or straight 6 turbo?

Can't decide on whether I should get a v8 later on or a straight 6 with turbo. The turbo will be faster for cheaper but a v8 just sounds so tough.

>>16112869
>not preferring the sound of an I6 over a V8
>>
>>16112869
DESU I can't choose between the V8 burble waking the dead or an I6 trying to fly out of the engine bay.

The only issue I feel is that with FI 6's is that the owner typically chooses BOV/wastegate to atmosphere and you can't hear shit but angry wind spirits.

Fully qualified Butcher here.
Apprenticeship is 3 years now. First year pay should be around $12.50ish/H
You go to trade school for 2 x 1 week a year, unless you have on site training(tafe guy comes to your shop for a few days to make sure you are up to standard) depending on who you work for you may have to pay for trade school or you may not.

But at the end of the day i wouldn't recomend it, right now live export is absolutely fucking us. The trade is fucked. Shit pay, shit work and shit people.

As a first year you get all the exrta shit jobs like making snags, mince triming out 4 1/4s of beef, cleaning up everyday and my favourite job for apprentices, cleaning out the drains

>TL:DR its a trap, dont do it
>>
>>16112902
but if you could only have one, which would you rather?

>>16112890
Mate, wind spirits sound hectic as.
What about a v8 with turbo?
>>
>>16112890
Depends where you live m8. If you don't live near any good roads cars with bigger turbo's (assuming you're gonna chase power) aren't much fun to drive in traffic compared to a v8 that will just cruise along. A barra would probably be the best compromise for drivability and turbo. For hills driving though hard to beat a light japcrap car for fun
>>
>>16112914
v8 in a bigger engine bay

i love my vx but the engine bay is so fucking cramped with the v8 and it was only designed for a i6/v6 max so you end up cutting the shit out of your hands.

a LS in a kingswood would be absolute jizz.

On the upside the VT VX handle quite well since the v8 model calais is only around 1650kg with the auto ls1

Get an S13 sub-frame, weld in some anchor points, adjust rear arches.
This is neither fun, easy or quick- but it will open up a LOT better brake options, including sweet arse R200 LSD diffs. That will also mean you might actually get some power down.
Surprisingly, these aren't hugely expensive if you do some hunting around

SR20DET
Yeah I know, its dull. But its:
>A- cheap
>B- easier than a drunk slut
>C- been done more times than the drunk slut has seen benis

Its a proven swap, doesn't fuck up the front suspension geometry with some heavy chunk of iron and you can basically get a how-to off dozens of sites, 100's of people and any little fiddly bits are probably covered by google searches.
Provided you do all the work, its roughly 2500-3000 dollaryroos
>>
>>16113390

>>
>>16113382
wat
>>
>>16113400

Its a type of lowering. Except on trains. Basically we made a mistake designing trains so that they came out at a different height from the platforms, the operator (government) made us shim the bogie (wheelset) to the chassie to change the height. Now that works currently but new track is being laid over much pointier hills. Shimming the bogies means the rollingstock can't bend as easily, it is more likely to simply break or ground itself.

It's a problem.

Of course it's a v6, hence why I am asking whether to go v8 or turbo 6. Wouldn't say gutless though, ecotecs rip mean skids unless you're referring to the alloytec?

Also what do you mean they will get rooted after a couple potholes? Is this coilovers in general or just for commodores?

I already bought them, just waiting for them to arrive plus the rear is an actual spring over shock coilover, as in it's not separate which is pretty neat.

I think I might just pick up a junked S13 and pull as many good parts off it that I can, and maybe go the route of Z32 front brakes/calipers. Getting rid of drums on the rear is definitely necessary.

I'm just super indecisive with the engine, I can't decide if I want a torquey, NA, lightweight alloy V6 or some kind, or a highly strung turbo engine.

was hooning down some long windy hills and felt like the car went on 3 wheels for a second and it's a lot more 'twitchy' driving it now when you go faster around corners. the back feels like it's about to kick out or it's going too much towards the 'front'. like instead swaying towards the side like it used to, it sways kind of to the front corner instead. though it used to feel like that, it feels like it's doing it more so.

could something with the suspension be bad that would cause this or something else with the car?

all these spring kits with shocks quote lowering of 60mm whereas coils its usually 0-40ish for rear and 20-60 for front.
I dont want to end up buying then installing lowered springs to find that its an ungodly drop in height then be stuck with it. I like the idea of adjustibility from coilovers.
However someone above said something about adjustable coilovers being weaker than fixed height shocks with springs.
ive found a site that sells billstein b14 coilovers for 760 including shipping from the uk, seems very reasonably compared to the 1000s i was getting quoted from here

>>
>>16113649
Bilstein are pretty decent, with an aussie company you just get better support if you're slapping them in something less common
>>
>>16113649
bilsteins are very good quality
if you're paying less than 1200+ don't get coils as they'll be shit quality
the ride depends on shock quality and spring rate, not on """"coilovers"""" or not
>>
>>16113661
This. Don't get meme'd into buy a terrible spring rate. Most skyline owners do this, so every skyline around is running a back breaking stiffness for street driving
>>
>>16113623
I found on heavier cars (1400+kg) that the old Bilstien B4 mono-tube shocks where better than nearly all coilovers and last for nearly forever.
Coilovers on street cars is a pretty dank meme, unless you really like rebuilding them... a lot
>>

They are MCA blue coilovers, cost me 1600$ and have been told they are good coilovers.
>>
>>16113708
They're a bit hit and miss sometimes but overall are meant to be pretty reasonable
>>
>>16113675
Coilovers are ok if you need 10-16 odd settings for various rebound rates, camber adjustments and all that good stuff.
But on a street car, you set it up for roads.
That's it!

The other eleventyodd settings are mostly just there for wank-factor or some speedhump grinding to look cool with 20deg of camber and other nightmarish shit people do with cars. Plus 90% of them will buy Uncle Wang Fuk's super dooper coilovers off ebay, that are mostly dual tube, cavitate the shit out of the oil causing them to overheat, the seals fail after about 3000km and if they're really lucky it won't fail and bin them into a ditch.

I mean, I like coilovers as a concept and would buy them again if I ever did serious track days again, but for the most part there's plenty of good basic shocks + spring combos out there which just do the job fine. Heck there's more than enough out there which rival a top of the line coilover setup.
>>
>laced with LSD
Nah, LSD isn't a very stable chemical, smoking it would just straight up destroy it.
>>
>>16113727
I think I have about 8 different adjustables on my set and I use 6 of them, they're great of you use the car for nothing other than thrashing about through the twisties or in the track, don't daily coilovers though, it's a harsh lesson to earn by yourself
>>
>>16113729
responding to
>>16113621

I should sleep.
>>
>>16113727
camber adjustment is a tuned thing, once it's set correctly you leave it, cars need adjustable camber for anything other than daily driving as it does make a very big difference having correct contact patch

compression and rebound settings done correctly will make a car be very reasonable over bumps yet perfecting the handling characteristics to suit the driver
some people like twitchy responsive cars yet others enjoy softer more predictable and throwable response, tuning of which cannot be achieved without adjustable preloads compression and rebound

coilovers are literally just springs and shocks that you can adjust, in a housing. That's all they are, nothing special

unsure how you don't realise that
>>
>>16113737
Yeah, that's sort of what I was getting at.

If you're going to get use out of them with the settings and know what you're doing they will serve well. On a daily its just another thing to fix and after awhile you just get sick of fixing shit. Even high quality coilies I've seen fail well before they should and not being used under any undue stress either. Its not like a complete failure of all 4, but usually 1-4 seemed to have some dickery about it and just shat itself for no obvious reason.
>>
>>16113751
I got them cos I want the car to skid around corners better and not fucking feel like a boat that's about to tip over lol.

They're fully threaded and seem to be much better than xyz, HSD, etc
Also they come with a 2 year warranty which is nice.
>>
>>16113751
>unsure how you don't realise that
I know what they are man!
Its just that people forking out cash for stuff they don't need and will never use is sort of a bugbear for me. Plus they do wear quicker because most get set up with some pre-load to adjust the height and that's just more downtime as the shock itself under more load and moved out of its top-0 ride height.
>>
>>16113713
Quick question for you then my man;

Tein Super Street- good or meme coilovers? That's what I was getting for the ute.
>>
>>16113773

Get some cutting polish, then you'll either need to buff it with a wheel, or get a rag and do it by hand- this is hard work and if you've never used a buffing wheel, don't!
Once its glass smooth, lighter general duty polish and it should be good as new and very shiny

Don't use clearcoat!
>>

seems like I really fucked it up using 400 grit if you're recommending 1500 grit.

Cheers I'll give that a go, my mate has a buffing wheel so I guess I'll get him to do it for me and I won't use clear coat this time.
Found some genuine ones that are in similar, condition, might buy them and fix them up so I can swap them straight into the car.

gday i have a question if anyone would like to help out

im looking for a car that is reasonably quick for roughly 10k that can corner well and that is also 2 door. im leaning towards a gtir despite knowing how hard for parts they are and the weak boxes and such.

there is also a vy maloo at the local police impound up for auction that i had a look at today that looks alright to even though they burn through fuel and cant corner that good.

anyway if someone could give me some ideas on what would fit that would be awesome!

Simplicity, mostly - I wouldn't say they're any more reliable, as I've seen more worn or free-spinning clutch fans than I have failed electric fans.

Ok guys the sensor is still leaking. Upon closer inspection and consulting my gregorys manual there is meant to be a washer inbetween the sensor bolt and the transfer case.
The oil has just been replaced (so the guy told me) do i bite the bullet and shell out $50ish for gear oil and a washer or get some sealant and cover the base of the sensor with it to stop the leaking hopefully until the next oil change?
>>
>>16123094
Sealant generally sucks near anything with oil, if you've got some flat, sheet aluminium around about 1-2mm thick you can make a washer pretty easily in a pinch.

>>
Should i get the V8 Soarer or 1J

Which would be more reliable down the track
>>
>>16123509
They're unreliable as fuck European-designed turds. They're prone to head gasket failures, ECU failures, coolant leaks, coil pack failures, etc. Their handling leaves much to be desired, most of their owners are poor and unable to afford to look after them, and even if there's one in good condition you'd still be better off buying a similarly priced Jap car.

Mazdas are okay, not the best in terms of reliability, probably better than Hyundais of a similar year - they drive nicely and have pretty good interiors, though.

>>16123518
I don't know enough to say about reliability, but if you plan on doing any performance mods, the J series engines are a much better platform than the UZ in terms of price/performance.
