pls no turn a nice off road thread into a ford/chevy debate. we're better than this, /o/
btw, manuals can't offroad. only automagics otherwise you get clutch burning and your dick falls off.

>>16105304
If you're abusing it that hard off roading, why don't you invest in a lift and some wider tyres?
Also, I've never noticed this until now. But what do the guard rails on the side of the bed do? What is the benefit opposed to the classical ones that go all the way to the roof so it protects when rollover and you can put ladders and shite on them?

Also, you might want to change the differential fluid and transmission. They're known (as opposed to Jeeps and Porsche off roaders) to have less efficient seals and therefore can get water in them more frequent than naught, unfortunately.

>>16106005
>>16106396
Classically, Chrysler and Jeeps have the new stereotype of being overly complicated and having random computer and mechanical issues breaking down in their first 25 000km. This is true to some extent because their quality control and testing have slacked since the auto collapse.
This is not true of anything before 2004, though. The stereotype just carries over. Also, the Wranglers have now all been reduced to a mall crawler costing upwards of $40 000. I haven't seen an Unlimited with a winch since August and I pass by TJs/ YJs with winches every other day.

Yes but it also costs more and unless you upgrade the bumper, you'll lose it every once in a while.
Although Jeeps are not the best off roaders, they are certainly the cheapest and most customisable with prolific after-market parts.
Also, the feeling of driving with no doors and no roof on the highway is a huge upside, too.

Personally, I'd love to have a mildly lifted, sanded wheelwell Cayenne with a winch bumper and side rails to off road.
>>
>>16109791
>btw, manuals can't offroad. only automagics otherwise you get clutch burning and your dick falls off.
I trust that's a facetious /o/ related comment and you don't actually believe that tripe.
>>16110376
>unless you upgrade the bumper, you'll lose it every once in a while
That's a completely superficial and simple upgrade that every offroader could and should benefit from regardless. You shouldn't go paying too much attention to angles drawn on some paper in regards to factory clearance angles as they don't tell much of the story.
>>
>>16109791
How would you burn the clutch while offroading?
>>
>>16111064

Lots of people fry the clutch off road, especially in soft sand. Either because the clutch is on the way out or they have made power increases that the clutch can't handle and prolonged slip under load happens.

Or they are a numpty that slips the clutch to prevent bogging down, instead of going down a cog. It's usually this cause.

I said "don't turn this into a chevy/ford classic /o/ debate" and then made a tongue in cheek statement bashing manuals (and or automatics) right afterwards as that is a frequent /o/ debate.
I thought people would get that and find it funny ):

However, the bumper issue is pretty damn superficial however, it won't look good at all given Lexus's bodywork. Though, I live in the Canadian shield off roading territory so I see many more rocks and steep drops than most places in the world.
a lift kit is still your friend when it comes to bumpers.

>>16111064
Otay. this part was kinda true. you don't get much of a wear and tear unless you're offroading to get to work daily. but a common thing to get out of a rut is to rev it up to an incredibly amount in order to gain enough traction to pull yourself up and control speed.
I've gotten better with experience with keeping it below 3000 then below 2000 when trailing but no matter how hard i try (or my friends try), the clutch burn smell still happens after mudding / carefully rock-climbing 5+ kilometres.

It hasn't really been shown to wear the clutch down compared to normal use, though. And 4WD - Low is your friend.

[spoiler] sorry for shitposting :T

Like I said, I presumed your manual/auto comment was facetious.
In regards to the bar work, there's plenty of aftermarket companies such as ARB and TJM that make high quality premium bars that look right at home on the Lexus Lanscruiser.

I have a guy 35 minute drive away from me that does custom fabrication on bumpers, skids, side skirts, etc. He's really helpful since he's a welder / moulder that specialises in auto parts specifically for offroading. He's where I got the idea to get a porsche cayenne off roader once i become a hundred thousandaire. the off road bumper would only be $2000 to make for the Cayenne as opposed to their regular Porsche bumpers that cost around $4000 to replace, lol.

I've never seen ARB and TJM, though. What else is worth looking into them? I like to webshoppe in my spare time at work - would never get anything online anymore but it's nice to daydream.
Also, fair point. I guess a bullbar would adequately protect any vehicle's bumper 99% of the time anyway. A bit too much translucent plastic on the front but that's just my taste (as long as it doesn't have LED lights, we're gucci, muh nucci).

>>16112030
It greatly helps that manuals have their rpm ranges shifted down compared to automatics.
Back with my aut(ism)omagic, i had to just shift it into drive slowly in order to get it winched out of hotspots. that was really annoying since there was no midpoint torque region like you can use with a manual.

Congrats on stretching your jeep phase for 26 years. Here's to never giving into a vangina.
>>
>>16112314
>I've never seen ARB and TJM, though. What else is worth looking into them?
Really?! They're (ARB in particular) the absolute best in the business when it comes to off the shelf vehicle protective bar work and both work towards location specific registration approval compliance (they usually have build tags fitted).
Both companies have their own respective air operated difflock line as well, although I think if I was to go the ARB airlocker route again, I'd fashion my own air lines up out of steel brake lines instead of the flexy nylon hose crap they use (anyone who's had airlockers will know what I'm talking about).
Both companies recovery gear is also top notch.

Low-range saves lives. People are getting more and more into putting dual-transfers in their offroaders here, and I gotta say that I'm really impressed by how much it increases the potential of the vehicle

Buddy of mine who owned this Hilux now has the gearbox of it in a LJ73 LandCruiser, and he told me that he didn't use the clutch a single when trying to climb or drag his way out of anything the last time he went seriously offroading

This is the car going without a driver, and with the idle turned up very slightly

If memory serves me right; 2008

Arctic Truck 37" conversion. The conversion itself alone is a good $24 000 or something

20mm body lift, 40mm suspension lift, modified arches, special shocks, gearing of the axles changed, speedometer calibration and much more, and its all sitting on 37x12.5R17 tires, AND its even all approved by the nazi-esque DMV we have here

Its a "lesser" version of the Hilux Clarkson and May drove to the north pole

If I want to lift a panther just by using taller/stiffer springs, what's the highest I can get without having to replace other suspension components? And would I need new shocks too or would they just extend to the length automatically? I know at some point you need to add longer control arms to avoid fucking up your suspension geometry and making the car an uncontrollable piece of shit.

So I found a j300 on some family property, the short of it is it's fucked (flood, sitting for 20 years and a fire), but I want to wrench on it and restore it for an offroader so I don't do something stupid like take my 2wd f150 off into oceano dunes again and have to get pulled out three times again. had I known the damn thing existed I would have been working on it so long ago. photo over here >>16122941

Does anyone know some decent online resources I can use to make this happen?

Is a 2wd s10 ok for reasonable off road stuff? I know I can't go through the mud like the others. I just want to go on some trails.
>>
>>16123096
If there is loose gravel on a hill and you can't gain enough momentum, it is already over. With 2wd you are really limited. Does it have a difflock? I know because I really often have to engage the 4wd.

I had a Chevrolet 2010 Colorado.
Definitely not. Bumpers are all metal, no skid plates, no skid rails, dented it up way too bad, unfortunately.
Once the loose gravel hits every 2-4km, you're pretty much screwed unless you have a winch friend or the offroad boot helper that you can get for $100.

how much does it cost to lift, wheel, bull bar, and winch a pickup (NA) trucc in Europe?
are parts harder to source due to lack of demand or is everything just siphoned off of other markets and you just have to pay shipping?

also my gaze of mad approvals
>>
>>16124718

Some parts can be hard to source, like rock sliders for certain trucks, but that can usually be solved easily with ebay from australia or the states.

The modifications done to these two trucks can run you up to about $25 000. This includes the mods being legal at our strict "DMV".

And thank you.

I've seen both the Renegade and Trailhawk version at work (I'm in used cars). I think it's worth the extra $1-3K it'll cost you. Most of the reviews of the Trailhawk version boil down to "We were pleasantly surprised, and because our expectations were so low we're actually kind of impressed." Good enough for me at the price point. It ain't a Tacoma or Wrangler, but it's 60% of the price for 90% of the performance.

Thinking about getting a Suzuki samurai for an off-road toy. How bad are the reliability issues and how expensive are they to maintain. They're pretty cheap in my area and seem like decent performance for the money. Redpill me /o/

Great choice. Very reliable. Parts are cheap and relatively easy to find. Decent aftermarket mods avail. Easy to work on.

Down side is power and cargo/passenger space. 87ish HP. Won't go too fast uphill at highway speed, but once off-road you can go pretty much anywhere. Realistically, only room for 2 humans and gear (plus small dog if you are good at Tetris).

Yup to most of that. I'm in Colorado, so there are plenty of Sammies in junkyards and parts on CL. I'll disagree a bit on the interchangeability of Jeep aftermarket stuff, but there are still plenty of places with Samurai specific upgrades.

He'll stop the day you get a Ranger 4.0 4x4. Nah but if you have that jeep already, you won't be able to pick up a Ranger for under $7500 (CAD, anyway). Which I imagine is twice the cost of that Jeep and probably does the exact same function you want of it.

I adore the fact that you don't need a winch where you go. That concept is foreign for me. Once the clay turns to granite on the Canadian Shield, you either get harsh mud / pebbles in the Autumn/Spring or deep snow in the winter. Maybe 2 months of the year you will be able to drive winchless in the dry, soft dirt.

I'm going down to Kingston, ON over Sunday - Tuesday to maybe pick up a uni grill to go see the glaring blood moon. There's a dark sky viewing area one hour out where they cut down most of the trees.

Otherwise, we'll have to find some offroading areas with enough clearance. The good places would be the highwire cut out lines but those have a bunch of patrollers and steep drops.

No amount of lift besides a belt would be able to get you through those highwire rocks, unfortunately.

Why's the lift kit shitty, anon? Looks like the wheels are doing fine to me (from this one picture of a third of the vehicle) in the weight distrib. of the front tyre against the well.

Another pic, its a cheap lift with overly stiff springs and shocks that, yes work, but are very uncomfortable even from a leaf spring perspective. Since I'm getting more gear the car will be a bit heavier and may soften the ride a bit. Just cheap stuff that's all.

How do those thin tyres work on rocking? Could that be your issue? I could be wrong but I've never actually seen a lifted wranglies with such thin tyres before. Looks like they're synthetic, too and not actual rubber which GREATLY impacts how the vehicle drives (due to what you mentioned about the cheap jeep suspensions).
I still have my rangercc (pronounced rain-jerk-k) which isn't great on suspension either so a set of wrangler, off road, natural rubber tyres from before 2000 helps amazingly with the overall ride.

Despite my Rangercc being really rocky, I have never known the CJ / YJ / TJs for being that much better. partially because all wheel springs and also because they're dedicated off roaders which mean feeling every bump is a huge plus to keep vehicular longevity off the road.

>shocks and springs
>leafs
You mean horizontal shocks? what do you mean shocks, springs, AND leafs?

btw. am going to get a jeep before 2017 to add to my fleet since new contracts = more money to work on a vehicle. what made you get the YJ?

Sorry for the fucking druncc rambling. The erections have slowed down and my friends are all asleep now so I am really talkative and have nothing to do.

you're chilling bro. it's not the shocks/dampeners, took them of and tested them for stiffness/ too heavy of a weight of fluid, and the springs/leafs are overly stiff for the jeep. There is 0 down travel, and jacking up an individual wheel front or back will raise the entire rear/front of the car. Also there are NO sway bars. Handles like a god damn sports car in corners because of how stiff the springs are. Also, I was kinda on a budget and since the yj is the forgotten child of the wranglers they were cheap and fun I guess. Kinda fell in love with this ones character when I saw it. Non the less I love it. Also its only the 2.5l

Okay so my friend just woke up and rolled a weed cigarette so now I'm drunk and high. I hope this makes sense:

>NO sway bars
actually keked out loud. yeah, not sure why i'd think there'd be horizontal shocks on a YJ, lol. that's my bad there.

that's also pretty damn impressive for the length you'd to check for the suspensions (outside of just a classic rust test). if you did that, why didn't you just replace the springs / leafs for the extra $300 (or what i'd imagine from a scrapyard) if you thought that was the issue?
Anyway, did you consider the tyre issue? If you didn't buy them yourself, tyres go a pretty long way in helping suspension than you'd think. You might have to first replace the lift kid / wheel well because the way it's sitting right now might interfere. But it could help even despite the bad suspension.
Why not torsion it a bit just to release it back to factory standards or maybe remove a leaf (if he added one to lift it)

When it comes to the YJ, I don't think they're forgoten. For the price, they're more accessible than the TJs, that's for sure. 2.5s are fine. Don't let the memers tell you that you need an I-6 in order to have fun on a jeep. Especially if you're on a budget.

not tires: I can't see why that would effect suspension quality, though yes different compound tires ride differently they don't contribute much in squeamishness, that's just the tire pressure. They mainly will be different in flexibility and malleability.

Removing leafs: Literaly don't know if it will work and that involves removing all the shit for replacing leafs anyways so, in that case it's either take them out and take a leaf out to find it wont help then do it all over again to get new leafs, effectively doubling the work, or just getting new leafs from the start.

No sway bars: ikr so fucking great and there is practically no body roll even with all my camping gear inside with another person. It's a mericle I got it to full flex.

2.5: I know this that's why i went with it and not th 4.0, i'm an efficiency kinda of person.

Trail: yeah dude I know quite a few more fun moderate/beginner trails that are really fun for camping out or just going for a chillin drive.

forgot to mention I would be doing almost all the work on the car unless I goto a custom spring shop that will do the whole deal for like $2800, but i'm not that committed to the car yet. (being all new springs, shocks, and doing driveline angles for compensating for extreme flex and downtravel)
>>
>>16138786
Tyres affect them more than you think. Maybe not off road but when off roading, there's not reason you should be worrying about comfort, hehe. Remember that all land yachts prior to 2000s have thick, natural rubber tyres in addition to their overwhelmingly good suspension. The extra weight helps, too.

I was more saying that you could remove the leafs and replace them for a coil. It all depends how long you want to keep the vehicle, of course. i've never looked into getting shocks for my ranger but knowing YJs / TJs, I'm sure a lot of people have done it and done it well. other ways to better suspension is to literally upgrade the seats in your vehicle.
I have half a mind to remove the sway bars in my ranger. they're the things that make me lose control when drifting in rain / sleet.
>inb4 learn to countersteer

>>16138794
Ouch. That's around 2x more expensive for a full YJ in operational (i use that word lightly) condition I see around here.
I honestly think I'll go for the extra $1000 for the TJ. Not because of any bonus riding experience. But I simply, personally, subjectively like the aesthetic. Also airbags.

Hopefully a late year CJ-7. I had a friend of mine's dad who hasn't driven his in 7 years so would love to buy his off him.
Seeing the reality, I would probably go for a YJ at a good price or sell a few guns to get a TJ since I like the look better. IT also has a bit better suspension so grills won't complain about muh bumps. Also: airbags.

The main benefit is the customisability but I really just want to drive on the highway with no doors and no roof. Also the slow rolling rock crawling and being able to spearfish in a jeep would be nice.

I'm getting my Ranger winched on Friday and replacing the 1.5 inch lift to around 3 and some Wrangler tyres.

Should I just spend the extra money in building up my work ranger for fun or get the TJ and work that instead?

My fabrication mechanic just told me that putting a ramjet 350 into my Ranger might be feasible since he can shoppe all the adapters and nipples himself for under $700.

Or I could try squeezing a Ramjet 502 into a Jeep TJ, hehehe

if you're getting a winch just buy a harbor freight one and buy a synthetic rope separate, you'll save like a hundred bucks on that, and if you get a tj you can always just swap the winch from one truck to the other. as for the engine idk, seems like something unnecessary.

That's the easy part. the winch bumper is what would cost significantly more. Also lifts and tyres and wheels and paint and skids and oh my!
I'll see if my mech has some cheap winch combos down the line.

Compared to the defenders of old, the suspensions would be significantly smoother than TJs and CJs so that's why I hesitated to mention those to him.
Also, it's a straight forward swap because the old ford throttle bodies, tubes, connexions literally fit into everything due to them being grossly oversized. Bronco, Ramchargers, K5s. Mmmmmmmm.

They also have standard packages for Wranglers

Passed by another Rangerfag on the road near my neighbourhood here. From the 30 second conversation at the red light, he had a set of Discoverer Coopers on his 2009 V6 offroad trim with 2inch torsion adjusters in the front and stock back. A lot of lights on here too.

Sound off if you happen to be a NEETfag and happen to just be here. Red and tinted windows too. 8/10 effort for going to have to hand roll down the side passenger window in order to talk to me

>>16144058
AH I totally forgot about the landcruisers. Those are damn good Defender replacements.

>>16144066
Why not do a customisation in the US and then drag it over to Iceland? Fill the vehicle full of fuel (in cans) too to offset the cost by a small bit.
>>
>>16144499
I'm not sure I follow...

>>16142976 says "no arctic in America", aka that Arctic Truck doesnt work in America. Then I said he could probably ship a vehicle to Iceland, where they do most of their business, have it modified and then sent back to the US
>>
>>16140962
idunno. Looks like a 2002. Don't really care, desu since the winch is the important part.

>>16141008
idunno. cheap and prolific. cooper makes good tyres too but depending on what you dribe and where you live, don't fall for offroad = winter grip meme. you might waste a LOT of fuel just by spinning the larger diameter or on the extra bit of rubber
>>
>>16144499
i also like the defender, and willys Jeep, but i gotta admit i'm a Toyota fanboy

just get them customised from where you're importing them from. none of this is too extreme, i'm just adding onto what you're saying and blogposting a bit.

>>16144552
From someone who would love either of those TJs getting washed away, that is actually a very sad picture.
>>
>>16142049
dang, I want a defender but the all seem like the north american ones are over 50k

I don't know if its worth fucking around with importing on.

Here's the reality (I'm so sorry, anon. I know this feel all to well, too):
Land Rovers and Jaguars have very complex systems since they build them all in jolly ol' England. They have little outsourcing and are respectable for this but also means they shoehorn ALL owners into using their certified mechanics to deal with their repairs and computers.
This is true even of the old Defenders and X Series. If you can't afford the first premium to buy a shiny new Defender, odds are you can't afford the cost to maintenance them in the one or two Land Rover certified mechanics in your entire country.

This is why I would recommend a G-Wagon or Jeep. Or this thing: >>16144058

Sorry, anon </3

Yeah I practically grew up at Torrey pines Beach. I only ever go surfing with one friend maybe once a month if not less. I'm always going as far east as I can any chance I get though. Probably because I'd never been further than El Cajon growing up.

One of my AT3 tires has a slow leak. Losing probably 15 psi a week. Is there an easy way to fix this myself?

I was happy refilling it (and checking my other tires) every time I filled up on gas with the stations air pump, but some wasteman cut the hose off and they haven't replaced it yet. I was just going to do that until the tire wore out. Then I realized I drive 5k a year and it'll take god damn forever. Time to fix it..
>>
>>16146072
Bring it somewhere to repair the leak honestly, for you convenience.

Bruh hell yeah I'm out in Lakeside. I actually might hit up Otay Truck Trail tomorrow since it's been a few weeks since I've done any off-roading

>otay truck trail

>OTAY
Bucketlisted.

How difficult is the trail, btw. Rocks or mud?
>>
>>16146072
>>16146072
Toss it in a large bucket or some sort of bathtub or pool. See if air bubbles evolve.

Otherwise, it could be a slow, diffusive leak through one of the seas that occur when the walls of land rub against a rock and make a hairline crack across the corner. Hairline cracks are either 1-5cm long and can get wider. The also get bigger and can't be found like normal holes and whatever, unfortunately.
>>
>>16146655
>>16146259
Otay is the easiest thing, it's a trail border potrol uses. Super chill, it's kinda an out and back but there are a few really nice places to park and have lunch. Expect to see border patrol homies mobbing around at like 30 everywhere on the dirt, haha.
>>
>>16146687
>>16146072
lmao, just use soapy water and spray around it until you find the hole.
>>
>>16146930
Won't work for a small leak if it's one of those diffusing, annoying ones.

Worth a shot though.
>>
>>16146937
>>16146259
True

also nice Tacoma, super clean.
>>
>>16146923
Neat. do they have winches? Looks like it'd be much more fun to dribe my Ranger across the California coast instead of a sportscar at this point.
Also go see Otaytay rangers in my Ranger, hehehe :E

>>16146949
Meh. Still worth the shot. I guess it's easier than my original idea about the bathtub but that's always what has worked for me when I had a pool. Place the tyre on the bottom and keep the water as steady as possible.

Problems: time/effort, pool required, it's November. Honestly, might just be worth ignoring at this point until it gets to an actual issue

(also, who has that image of the prius owner "taking a fiveminute break" after his tyre was leaking. I forgot to save it and now it's archived under something I can't remember)
>>
>>16146995
I don't remember but chances are yes.

What is the general opinion on the Honda Passport?

I need a daily / offroader in the $1-$3k range, I live in Texas. I'll be transporting me, my dog, and friends usually.

The Passport looks great for camping and roadtrips, too.

Are there any significant problems with Passports?
>>
>>16146655

has anyone ever been offroad and seen a black guy on the trail?
im serious desu
i dont think that black people actually go into the woods
why is this?
>>
>>16148814
blacks are very superstitious and afraid of many things
they seem to think everything in the woods is out to kill them and will hoot and holler everytime even the smallest bug gets near them
they are much better off in their government housing with their 15 year old tv's
>>
>>16147090
passports are fairly decent and solid vehicles all around
they certainly dont stand out in any serious off road situations but if you plan to do just fairly mild stuff you should be fine
keep in mind the aftermarket for them is basically non existent so if you do have plans to make it more capable off road you better be good at fabricating
>>
>>16148814
They're afraid they might have to swim.

I have one and it's extremely reliable, while in comparison my FJ60 doesn't run at all yet. Parts are cheaper and easier to get for the Samurai than for the Land Cruiser too. I drive it everywhere. It can go anywhere off road. The 1.3 is actually good off the line and it'll do 60 just fine. I daily drive it 40 miles a day and I regularly drive it from Orange County to San Francisco twice a month with no issues, and I think its fucking fun to drive even on the highway. The only downside in my opinion is lack of safety.
