What's a cheap car that would be great for riding coast to coast?
I live on the east coast in Canada, and as a project car, I want to get my hands on something as rust free as possible, and drive it back...
Any ideas on cars that can be found in good condition for a ride across 'murica, and then I end up with a car that I've learned to love (and hate) in and out and still works well in the end?
Budget is $6000 for the car. Is an E30 318 or 325 a good candidate?

bad idea?
I'm definitely open to suggestions. My only restrictions is:
- budget of 6K
- RWD
- not too many options or electronics
- manual transmission
- not hard to work on.

Answer
kidding. surprisingly a diesel mercedes would probably be the best although they are hard to find in a manual transmission. Also they only came with manual transmission with the non turbocharged cars and when it comes to something like a 300td you want the turbo'd version.
but yeah im rambling.
if I were you i'd get something like this and offer him 5k at best and spend $1k getting it ready for a cross country journey.

shit would be fun as fuck. I dont know why you want a manual transmission when youll be driving across country.
e30 325
Alternatively yes you can get an E30 like this mong said >>16094921

Thanks for the advice! Any reason why diesel specifically for older cars? Purely for the mileage and extra torque or from reliability stand wise they'll pull through?

300D Turbodiesel is terrible, so slow only good for back roads. I did a roadtrip on the interstate and it sucked.
My e36 M3 is great for long drives, very reliable. A 328i would fit in the price range or a beat M3.

well the OM617 out of the Mercedes 300td is a literal tank of an engine. those cars can get up to 500k miles+ and still be perfectly fine assuming it was taken care of. I can't really speak for E30s diesels but they can't be bad either.

>300D Turbodiesel is terrible
WHY? don't you think that yours might have just been a piece of shit.

It's my dad's and its in pretty good condition. It is just very slow, not good unless your entire route is backroads, which is probably not the case in a roadtrip. Thank god it was the turbo, which adds substantial power.
honestly the best boring choice is probably a wagon or a civic/corolla due to mpg and reliability
