Higher will give better acceleration but lower will give better top end. Hard to tell the ideal ratio when it takes over a week to get it changed. There's an inspection, the dev needs to add a dyno or at least the ability to pay to speed up the service. You're supposed to get a call, but hard to answer when you're out pumping shit or delivering wood. Some people have said a few days and others have said a day, but it's been over a week for me and no change except the car has moved a little bit.

Use a hex editor. I use hexed.it. It's just a website where you can open the save file. You can edit the values for hunger and shit too. It's the value right after the k->n. Just take note of your money and you'll see it as a float value under "PlayerMoney." Just highlight the 32 point value and change it to the word infinity. I got tired of waiting on the mechanic so I changed my gear ratio manually as well. Still can't get the achievement for 200kmh. Maybe you have to be given a ticket for it or something, but all I ever get from the cops is a failure to stop ticket.

Yes I used a wheel and H-shifter for that. The car shouldn't overrev unless you downshift at the wrong time and overrev it.

Haven't tried with a gamepad yet but the wheelsupport is already better than Project Cars.

I actually died after that race going home and lost my save so I'm gonna start from scratch tonight. Only takes about 40min to build the car now that I know where everything goes.

I don't play driving games often on my PC so I don't have a wheel. I think a harsh bump caused the engine to blow and I just heard the ending midair. I bought the AFR gauge to double check the tune and I'm right at 14.3 on a warmed car. I started from scratch the other day because my save got corrupted and the oil pan bolt wouldn't stay tight. Now after I'm done playing or earn an achievement, I just copy all of the files right outside the game save folder just in case. I need to find my gamepad at least so I can have better control over the throttle and steering. I don't think its going to be possible to win the rally with just a keyboard.
