Is buying a skyline worth it?

Considering most of them are going in the mid $20,000 range
>>
>is buying a 25 year old weeb car for $20k worth it when you could get a C5 corvette for the same price?
>>
Not really. It's a nose-heavy GT car. You can get better cars for the money.
>>
>>16048269
I took a ride in my work buddy's r32 gtr.

He paid 24 for it and had it imported through Florida.

I don't think it's worth it, not for the price or the performance. I mean, it's cool because it's a skyline, its really quick, but you can do so much more with that money. Or, just get a GTST skyline. Then you don't have to worry about turbo maintenance or awd problems, plus they're cheaper and it's still a right hand drive skyline people will gawk over.
>>
No. You can get a new mustang for that price

You can import one yourself for much cheaper than 20k. What importers are charging right now is criminal.

But I feel like dealing with customs and all that bullshit would be a pain by yourself

Lots of "no you can get a better car for that" posts without saying which car... C5 corvette is valid but I wouldnt say it's objectively better or worse than an R32 GTR. Same with a mustang or camaro. I'd say 20g's is worth it if the car is proven mechanically sound.
>>
>>16048391
>angryweeb.jpg
>>
If you want to turn heads and show people up at car meets, sure. But like you said, it's $20k. And 25 years old. There's no telling what the mechanical history of it is and if something breaks it's going to be really expensive to fix.
>>
Im not a fan of chili personally
>>
it's not worth it

If you want a Nissan R32 Skyline GT-R, yeah it's worth it I would say.
If you want a Jap sports car? No. Totally not worth it.
>>
>>16048575
^this

If you are into a GTR for more than like $15k to your door then it's just wasting money on a jap meme mobile.

He's not wrong, acknowledge it or not Japanese performance cars in the US have a huge ricer tax, just like classic muscle has a huge boomer tax.

You could get a C5 Z06 for that price which is a significantly better performance car, but a C5 Corvette is real common in America, at least a skyline would stick out a bit.

I can't fault someone for wanting to be a bit different.

Also I think C5s are one of the ugliest or at least blandest looking corvettes so thats a drawback
>>
>>16048589
Likewise, Corvettes have tax in Nippon

http://www.goo-net-exchange.com/usedcars/CHEVROLET/CHEVROLET_CORVETTE/700020662630161021001/index.html
>>
>>16048589
This phamilia, if you want a fun fast sports car then the C5 Z06 is the way to go.
Like he said there isn't a rice tax, but there's the 'Vette tax, it's not a monetary tax, but everyone that isn't in the know in terms of cars will see some douche in a Corvette.
Also C5r headlights are a must, i love pop ups but the C5 has the worst.
>>
>>16048269
Worth it when the prices go down, yeah.
>>
>>16048599

That is an expensive ass c4

But boy its clean and low miles

Also

>left hand drive

USDM asf

>Automatic

Rest in piss
>>
You can get a clean R32 in America for around 10k give or take a few thousand.

None of the benchracers here even know what the fuck they're talking about. Like lol who is gonna actually race this or a C5. If you take either to the track you will have fun and are likely too rich to be posting in this thread.

RBs are awesome engines and sound great. Nobody driving these cars cares about laptimes or beating WRXs at rolling starts on the highway. People that buy skylines actually take care of their cars and generally have grown out of their drift missile boiracer phase.

Don't buy one unless you know how to work on a car yourself or you'll be spending a lot of money keeping it on the road unless you only drive it on weekends.
>>
>>16048638

Corvette owners in the US are usually middle aged dudes who take good care of their cars, thats why the cost of insuring them here is so low.

There's nothing wrong with wanting a decent performing car for a reasonable price, not everyone can afford to buy a 2016 super car

Buying a 10-20k car that is a solid base, then upgrading it with bits and pieces as you get the money is totally reasonable.
>>
>>16048638
>and are likely too rich to be posting in this thread.

lmao track days are like $400 at most for the ones designed for old men with a buncha instructors and shit so they don't wreck their midlife crisis Porsches and BMWs and Corvettes. I've been on Laguna Seca for <$200 and the price of gas to get there.

But your right, at current prices the only reason to get a skyline is to keep it pretty and pose with it. There's a guy who autocrossed his r32 a few times and it was dog slow, couldn't tell if he was afraid to drive it hard or if it was really that bad.

A WRX will do everything 90% as well and will be much easier to take care of because there is community and support stateside, a C5, mustang, or Camaro will blow it away in a straight line, a Miata, rx8, s2k, and 86 will take corners better all for less money. And any number of niche cars can be had for less if what you want is attention.

Skyline is a kickass car, but don't kid yourself into thinking it's still a performance bargain at $20k+, if I had millions to blow I'd pick one up to play with for awhile, but it'd be pretty far down the list.
>>
>>16048386
Do you have any sources on how to do it? I haven't been able to find anything that is very helpful.
>>
>>16048662
Insurance on my Skyline is $55/month and about $40/year for historic plates lol

No inspection or emissions.

The only expensive thing about owning a Skyline is not being able to finance the initial 8-12k purchase and repairs, which if you have no experience with older cars then yeah stick to American muscle because it is just easier to get your feet wet there.
>>
>>16048682
What I did was swap a RB25 into a 240sx. It'll run with WRXs after you invest into a big turbo. All in all my build was only $7k and it is fun as shit to drive and nobody expects a S13 to be so quick.
>>
>>16048690

I didn't mean Corvette insurance was cheap compared to the skyline, I just mean in general.

It's cheaper than say, an M3, or mustang for example.
>>
>>16048280
C5z06 you mean, the c5 usually go for around 10k+

I want to buy a house in around 5 years when I'm done with collage & have decent job.
Only problem is my credit is kinda meh since I only recently got my first credit card and don't make any car payments since I own all my own cars.
How stupid would it be of me to get a loan & finance a R32 GTR thru someone who reported to the main credit bureaus?
Don't really like most new cars & already have a reliable daily to put around it.
Don't plan on spending more the $18k- $20k on a GTR with under 50k kms
>>
>>16048683
certain importers will do pretty much everything for you.
>>
>>16048638
>People that buy skylines actually take care of their cars and generally have grown out of their drift missile boiracer phase.
LOL no
>>
>>16048863
How much paper work is there for registering it though if you don't use someone like Japanese classics.
>>
>>16048269

depends how much you like them, back in the day here in Canada they were cheap. i bought my 1990 GTS-T 2dr with a rebuilt engine for $4000 about 6 years ago and sold it back to the guy i bought it from. since Americans have been able to have them and started buying our sloppy seconds, good luck getting a GTS-T under $8000 and a R32 GTR under $12,000. id get a GTS-T again but GTR are overpriced

>>16048683

an old friend of mine does it, thats how i got my Toyota Crown privately. he has a friend in Tokyo that purely exports Toyota luxury cars worldwide. they did all the paperwork, shipped the car from BC here to Alberta, all i had to do was the out of Province inspection. all i needed was daytime running lights and i just hacked the wiring so the headlights are on constantly until the ignition switch is off. after it passed i reverted back to no DRL

>>16048638

>People that buy skylines actually take care of their cars and generally have grown out of their drift missile boiracer phase.

ha WHAT? theyre one of the most haggard fucking cars here next to GC8 Subarus. even pick n pull here is starting to get R33 Skylines in the yard because people trash and wreck them. theres even some ratty GT-R here
>>
>>16048301
But it's not a GTR
>>
>>16048269
>>16048280
Consider that it will probably hold and maybe even increase its worth
>>
>>16048269
I'd buy one but not as a daily driver. It's a classic car and won't depreciate.
>>
I mean, it's an investment, right? Get one, drive it, keep it clean and neat, sell it in 5 years for mad profit.
>>
>>16048932

lol you're replying to someone clearly posting about the one true america, USA where skylines are cool and good because nostalgia/novelty.

basically if you can afford it and are willing to get your hands dirty then they aren't bad to buy into. inline 6 is bae.

If you tune the R32 a bit its much better than the C5.

A well tuned R32 GT-R is C6Z territory, not a bad base at $20k.

Find me a better car that's 25 years old

Oh wait. You cant

From nz where these are super common. Overrated AF, they arent that nice to drive on the track and they feel pretty disconnected. Not a bad road car but for the money I'd look at other options.
