The reason for the high regard for them is they can be built to suit any style. If you want a car with superb handling then the aftermarket is vast enough for you to do it. If you want a car that's fast in a line and very light turns then you can do that as well.

The 5.0 in the foxbody can only be built to 300whp on a budget or 400whp before the block starts to crack. The Chevy 350 is way better. 400whp or more no problem.

C4 Corvette is the answer. Especially the 1992-1996 models with the 300hp LT1. Better handling out of the box, too.

Uhhhh maybe? What do you consider fast? 12s? 250hp in a 2300 pound car isn't slow and you can definitely get you there on a budget since there are hundreds of build threads to glean info from nowadays, it's not whether it's possible it's whether or not you're capable of pulling it off.

190 - 200 WHP (very very able to do) is 13 and up Mazdaspeed quick. 265 WHP (able, but decently hard on engine) is 13 and up 5.0 Mustang fast.

All of which can be done for under or at $5k. Then $3k for the car, depending on how nice of a Miata you want to start with.
