Anytime I start my car my oil light stays on maybe for an extra second or two before turning off.. is this normal? I drive a BMW E46 M3. After I drive it around and turn it off and on it doesn't do it.. it seems like its just for cold starts.

Yeah, it's normal
What year and how many miles?
Early S54s (2001-2003) had too close rod bearing tolerances and could spin them. S54s in general just like eating rod bearings if they get beat/abused (especially as track cars, but nowhere as bad as E90/92s)
>>16036080
its an 03

I know mid year 2003 S54s had a production change that had slightly larger bearing tolerances and BMW put out a TSB for the older cars along with changing a bunch of rod bearings under warranty.
How many miles? Was it tracked or raced in the past often (think constant high rpms). Do a oil analysis and if there's a lot of lead present, you could be due for rod bearings soon. Or your oil pump is gonna crap out (rare but possible)
Woah anon metoo lol. Scares me a bit, i feel like the engine will blow up one day. Do you also have the-40 display thing? I think that's the temp but idk I've never seen it work kek
>fuck old M3
>probably beaten like fuck
>over 176k miles on the odo
well, I wouldn't be surprised if the engine shows some sort of aging after all that time.
everyone knows most BMW warning lights are mostly suggestions
>>16036108 here. I just saw the miles.
Yeah, just do a oil analysis. You're probably due for rod bearings and rod bolts. Figure $1500 if you let a shop do it. S54s like rod bearings. Be happy it's not a S65 where it'd be on its second set by now.

i never get that on my 2002 e46 m3, so I would suppose it's not normal? how many miles until your next oil change?
>>16036190
that's not an M3 dash, it's a standard e46, ergo not OPs car
>>16036060
What's an oil light?
yellow oil light = low oil pressure
if it turns off that`s not a problem
I had that light come and stay on for my ex e46 325i and I still went on a 2000 mile autobahn trip with it, drifting the shit out of it afterwards
>>16036190
are 176k miles supposed to be much?
it`s nothing special for an old car, in Europe at least
my 12 year old e60 is nearing 300k miles and it still runs like new
>>16036060
My friend has a E46 320d and its the same.

>my 12 year old e60 is nearing 300k miles and it still runs like new
Is it a Diesel?
Did you get any major work done to it? What sort of running costs are we talking about?
>>16037365
yeah it is a diesel
I`ve owned it for 2 months and driven 12k kilometers so far (7k miles)
changed oil and filter, replaced a couple suspension bushings.
the engine and auto trans runs perfect, no electrical issues or anything. Slowly leaks coolant somewhere, I top coolant up once every month, that`s all.
>>16036060
Thats normal on most cars thats the ecu checking engine sensors. if it stays on its an issue.
>>16037395
>Auto trans
Check for if its the coolant pipes/tubes/lines going to the transmission and if the engine coolant is also your trans cooler. If its leaking there you need to fix it or the transmission will be rip.
