I live up here in PA and I'm wondering how far south I should travel to get a "southern car"? For those unfamiliar with what I mean, here in the north, our cars get absolutely devoured by the salt on the roads. How far south do I need to drive to avoid these salty and rusty machines?
>>
>>16024436
Do people who actually know their shit about cars actually care about Ford Vs. Chevy or is it only a debate reserved for backwoods rednecks?
>>
>>16024444
only chevy lets you act like a fucking dummy who throws concrete blocks in his brand new truck bed
>>
>>16024455
That's another thing, is Aluminum actually as weak as some people make it out? I know they are bullshitting on the Chevy commercials, but is there really a need for a steel bed if you have a good liner under most conditions?
>>
>>16024486
it's not weak, it's soft, very soft

What is that metal thing with the hoses attached and why is the hose in the middle leaking? Don't know shit about cars...
>>
>>16024436

>just bought my first car on my own
>2000 jeep cherokee XJ with 95k on it

when I cold start the car, it takes a few seconds of the starter running, then it comes to life. for a few seconds once it starts going, the engine squeaks like hell. Is this normal or is there something i need to do?
>>
>>16024503
>The engine is squeaking
Are you sure that isn't your radiator fan belt? Squeaking is pretty common for the fan belt.
>>
>>16024500
That's probably your AC compressor. It is probably cold to the touch. Therefore, the stuff "leaking" off of it is just water.
>>
>>16024513
might be. but it goes away pretty quickly
>>
>>16024500
That's the AC accumulator.
>>
>>16024530
That isn't unheard of. Open the hood and start the vehicle. If the squeaking is coming from the very front it is the fan belt. I can't think of anything else that can squeak while idling. It is probably nothing.
>>
>>16024543
ok thanks. its a fun car to have and take off the road. i will probably come back a lot to /o/ and need advice.
>>
>>16024500
Looks like the drier for your air conditioner. Can't see what hose is leaking from the crappy pic. AC doesn't really leak in any case. It's a gas at room temperature that happens to have some oil in the system for lubrication. If you had a break, the system would be empty and have some oil sprayed around the break area. It wouldn't drip. It's much more likely that your front camshaft seal is leaky or something and it's slinging oil up on the tube.

Or that you're looking at the high side and it's just condensation on the cold pipe and not leaking at all. If the stuff "leaking" is just water, that's just condensate and there's nothing wrong at all. You're just being retarded.

Good news is none of that means shit for the mechanical get up and go of the vehicle.
>>
>>16024436
North Carolina should be good, they only salt once or twice a year.

I know what you mean OP, in Pittsburgh I'll see 2011s that have major rust.

Upon closer inspection, it appears to be this hose right here. The car is also overheating but seems to have plenty of coolant.
>>
I hit a guard rail last night and apart from my fender, I hit my wheel and not it's bent in a little like I have negative camber.

What would need to be replaced? Friend said it was a tie rod (another friend told me it was about time to replace them anyway) so I got the inner and outer driver's side tie rod.

If that doesn't solve the camber issue what should I look for?
>>
>>16024436
Put fucking QTDDTOT in the OP next time idiot
>>
>>16024436
Texas. I don't think anywhere south of you, because salt water is worse than road salt, if that is even possible and the thin bit in between is poor trash.

You really have to go to Texas or Colorado. I bought a 90s jeep with 230k and not a speck of rust, not even the little driveshaft bolts are rusted.

Or just get over it, you're going to ruin it having it in pa, you might as well start with a little rust.
>>
>>16024436
I'm in El Paso, if you find anything you like around me lmk and I'll help you pick it up. Zero rust area.
>>
>>16024561
O hates jeeps. The 4L is notorious for belt squeal. You can ignore it or get some spray on shit at vatozone to disappear it.

Also pretty sure you have an automatic tensioner but on the earlier 4L it would mean your belt isn't tight enough.
>>
>>16024561
Also don't listen to o, nobody here knows fuck all about jeeps or 4x4 or wheeling

Alright, I have a 2007 Honda Accord LX with 164k. I can sell it in my area for around $6k~.

What sort of sedan can I buy with $6k that's on par with my Accord for this price? I'm looking to buy something as safe and durable. I'm having a baby soon and I want something safe and not sporty (I will also use it to commute)

>>16024914
No shit, shit for brains. I am asking for good models for this price range that aren't shit. I was looking at stuff like Toyota Camerys and Nissan Altimas and it seems like the latest I can get is around 2006.

ok. are those repair manuals a joke, or are they nice to have when I need to do things?
>>
>>16024921
Look fag, we don't know your area. You ask completely general shit, don't expect good answers.

Nissan Altima is shit tho. Gas and brakes have zero subtlety. Absolute ass to drive, worse to be a passenger in.

I recently had my manifold replaced. After getting it replaced, a rattling sound has started to appear. I went under the truck and started to check places. I took a bar and moved my exhaust system around a bit. When I would move it in some places, it stops. Sometimes it rattles, sometimes it doesn't. After getting up to speed, the sound stops as well. Nothing else is wrong, besides the sound.
>>
>>16024933
Chiltons is excellent for that age Cherokees
>>
>>16024953
Put a bungee cord around the part you can rattle and see if it goes away.
>>
>>16024953
likely an exhaust heat shield
>>
>>16024959
I'll try that tomorrow

>>16024962
That is the first place I went to. I looked at my catylitic converter shield, no rattling. I should look at my exhaust's again though, I didn't look that fully.
>>
how big of a difference is there in driving between an FF and an FR

I've only driven an FF and it seems impossible to find a new RWD car of any sort nowadays
>>
Need a new car and my options right now are a dodge stealth/Mitsubishi 3000gt for $3,000 or a 2004 Impala SS for $3,500. Love the look of the stealth/3000gt but the specs on the impala are pretty impressive
>>
>>16024947
Why do you have to be so mean anon?
>>
>>16024993
impala will be more reliable, better availability of parts, and easier to work on.
>>
>>16024974
If you're just putting around going a to b, not much, unless you're driving in snow. If you're getting froggy and hooning around and shit, lots.
>>
>>16024819
Sorry. I didn't realize reading would be such an inconvenience for you.
>>
>>16025010
Some people forget this isn't /b/. There's banter and then there is being an ass goblin.
>>
>>16024993
impala is probably better choice for reliability, but you could also get a camry if you don't care about looks and performance
>>
>>16025179
>>16025019
Yeah that's what I was thinking, not many complaints about the stealth falling apart from what I can tell. It's less common so that's nice but I'm also a poorfag and don't want to have to poor all my money into repairs. I know the impala will perform better as well as have more common parts but the stealth is so sexy..

An Accord is like the #1 family sedan why do you want to get rid of it?

If you're worried about safety and reliability get a volvo wagon

Are there any years to avoid when buying a snek? I found one that I'd be comfortable paying for and it's '93, wondering what the biggest issues might be or if it's even worth it. Mileage shouldn't be an issue as it's under 10k. Pic sorta related, it's a viper I guess
>>
Recommend me channels to learn how to work on cars /o/. IÄm a student and live in a dorm and can't do anything myself yet anyway but I want to learn as much as I can from videos now that I have the time to do so.
>>
>>16027496
I have been watching ChrisFix on YT. I actually really like his content. I am not a professional, and not even a hobbyist mechanic. I just want to learn how to do stuff on my own car. I would recommend his channel. He's got stuff from soldering, to painting, to replacing pads and rotors.
>>
>>16027519
thanks I'll check it out
>>
I have the chance to get a 2013 Mazdaspeed 3 from a friend with 60k mi that was a commuter for taking over the rest of his payments which are 240$ a month for i think 2.5 more years. My only problem is FF since im coming from a 99 Prelude and not sure if i should follow my dream of mk3supra/z32/z33/mr2 or get the MS3?
Im a college student that makes 1.5k part time each month btw if that helps.
>>
>>16027794
$240/mo for 30 months is almost too good to be true. I'd take that deal without hesitation.
>>
>>16029153
He just bought a cummins truck and he uses that from what i hear, i just know nothing about them.
I will proly get it and save money after payments for my dream FR
