I don't usually come here, but I need your help.

My son is looking forward to his first car, and is suggesting a lot of different things.
He likes the look of classic cars, but I'm worried about safety (even though he is a safe driver) and cost.
Although he doesn't watch initial d, he also likes a lot of 80s and 90s japanese cars. He suggested a 1985 Nissan 300ZX Hatchback.

Money isn't too much of a problem (I make six figures), but I would like it to be less than $10,000.

A few main factors: safety, less than $10,000, automatic transmission, doesn't make my son look like a cringey faggot.
>>
>automatic transmission
Are you raising him to be a cuck on purpose, or?
>>
>>16012365
get your son a civic with a 5 speed
>>
>automatic transmission
>doesnt make my son look like a cringy faggot

Make up your mind, m8
>>
>>16012374
He can get into driving stick if he wants, and he shows interest in stick, but just for safety.
My wife knows how to drive a stick, and can teach him if she convinces me, but I'm not convinced, (but I'm not the expert).
>>
>doesn't make my son look like a cringey faggot
then why are you asking a bunch of faggots who worship miatas and 80s wedge shitboxes?
>>
>>16012365
I know its you pretending to be your dad faggot
>>
>>16012396
safety? on an old car with no abs or airbags?
0/10
>>
You mean your wife's son?

But really it comes down to reliability and safety for your boy.

He should learn how to wrench, but nobody wants to spend EVERY free day under the hood. So maybe something that for the most part reliable, but may take a little tinkering with for normal maintenance.

Safety wise; unless you want full on crumple zone and made of air bags; there is no replacement for overall size.

Now since you probably don't want him to race it; get a truck/suv/land barge.

Go with what he likes, within reason. 80-90s Japanese cars are faggot. Get that American steel.

op here, will be back in a while
>>
Get old steel, put in those 5 point harnesses, power steering and brakes. Possibly roll cage. Cheby 350s are reliable and easy to work on. Ok if they're hooked up to an auto because 3spds can be manly cause race car.
>>
Why don't you just buy what you want dude jesus. no reason to post some autistic shit.
>>
Lincoln Towncar

Bait / 10, but I'll bite

A standard transmission is probably safer.

This. Get a Panther. Reliable, safe, easy to work on. Powertrain is from a mustang so it's available to mod if he wants. Seating up to 6.
>>
>>16012504
>>16012471
And I forgot, look into the marauder with a $10k budget. Not a whole lot better in performance. But rare and good investment value. Has a more special engine that needs premium fuel.
>>
Just buy a Honda and STFU.

Coming from the dad that can't drive a standard transmission

You're cringey. You're cramping his style. If you're lucky he'll take naked pictures of himself with a polaroid and put them in your sock drawer for your wife to see.
>>
>>16012365
late 90s Z06 or 99-04 Cobra. If he won't learn to drive a stick he's already a cringey faggot, there's nothing more you can do.

Also, why the fuck are you buying him a car? Make him work for it, he won't love you anymore for buying a 90s accord or a brand new GT350R. I wish my dad didn't do that shit, I didn't learn any real work ethic until I was in my 20s.

>>16012471

>>16012608
I think he wants his son to get pussy, not good gas mileage and automotive experience on easy engine platforms. Typical /o/, thinking with their heads and not their heads...

>I'm worried about safety
Cars made before mandatory airbags and rollover/side protection aren't very safe at all. If you feel your son is responsible and understands the risks then let him choose you fucking buzzkill.

>cost
A lot of 80's and 90's Japanese classics can be picked up for under $8,000 mint condition easy aside from rare examples. Insurance shouldn't be an issue either.

>automatic transmission
What kind of horrible father would force his kid to drive an old shitty slushbox automatic? Learning standard if anything will make him a better driver.
>>
>>16012365
The mr2s were fun as well. I would avoid rotary if you don't want to do engine rebuilds, (rx7 and rx8). Miatas are fun as well. The 300zx isn't a bad option. If he wants a sports car the best bang for the buck would probably be an mr2 or Miata. The zzw30 (third gen) had no snap oversteer. Snap oversteer is greatly exaggerated in the previous generations as well. The zzw30 probably has the best safety out of the mr2 trilogy, because it has the newest airbags, crumple zones etc.
>>
>>16012365
Also with the zzw30 he can get the smt, where he can switch gears without the car doing it for him, but he doesn't have to fiddle with a clutch.

the miata is arguable but if an mr2 isn't a sports car than I don't know what is.
>>
>>16012933
Yeah maybe the aw11 could be considered borderline sports car, but you're putting it in the same category as brand new c7's and gtr's.

Miata is laughable, it's a fun autocross car but it's not even a borderline sports car

with a manual transmission he'll be on his phone less. it's way safer
>>
>>16012957
GTR by definition is not a sports car.
>>
>>16012988
>He'll now be on his phone cruising in 4th rather than at a stop light
Such safety measured woah

Why would someone buy a manual for the safety anyways? Isn't safety what ruined cars for car guys anyhow?

Buy him a manual vehicle that feels like it will kill him so he's more responsible with it. Or dies.
>>
>>16013068
kek
>>
>>16012365
Get a Starion/Conquest instead. The 300zx is a nightmare to repair and the 1st gen chassis is underwhelming. Starion is king of 80s wedgecars.
>>
Golf? Corrado? Sirocco? If he can fix a German car then he's all set. also not cringey (golf is questionable) and plenty safe, fun, whatever.
>>
>>16012647
coming from the cucked dad actually asking /o/ of all places, for car advice for your son.

Just let the kid pick what he wants and let him deal with it. If he's a safe driver like you say he is, then he'll be fine.

How old is he? Let him have his fun.

also

a panther is far from cringey. it might not be sporty, (it's literally as far as can be, it's a fucking family car platform) but it is ridiculously safe, insanely reliable, bulletproof, but still large and with a big engine. It's no lie that it has the powertrain of a Mustang.

though if thats the case you might as well see if he wants one of those. a Foxbody is pretty affordable on your budget, hell at 10k you could get a pretty good condition example.
