Currently have $1200 saved for wheels and tires for the winter on my '14 Mustang GT, but I'm now considering getting a cheap winter beater with AWD instead so I can keep the pony out of salt.

Any decent suggestions?

1,200 won't go far. Just get a FWD shitbox for winter.

AWD / 4WD is a nice feature for winter, it surely isn't necessary.

I bought OP pic for $600, running and driving 4wd works too, driven it 100 miles so far after all the repairs and shit

Are you sure you need AWD?

Don't get me wrong. I love AWD. I'm on my 3rd Subaru. But I also use Nokians because I live 6 miles from the nearest town here in the Great Lakes region. I can't call in sick.

My wife has a FWD Mini which gets through 95% of everything just fine. I take her to work when it's truly really bad, which is maybe once a winter.

I'd just get snow tires on steelies, or a FWD shitbox with narrow tires. AWD means nothing without good tires anyway.

False economy OP. Said $1200 beater will probably need another $500 in deferred maintenance or "fix it right now" sort of repairs, add to that snow tires for said beater to the tune of $300-400 if buying new.

If you want a cheap old car to screw around with on snowy roads well then it's a whole different story and I whole heartedly approve.

Like others have stated, AWD is nice but not crucial, in fact I'd prioritize snow tires above that.

My winter weapon of choice: '96 ES300 bought for $1600. Needs t-belt done but aside from that was very well serviced. Just picked up camry steelies at the pickapart for $56 and bought firestone winterforce tires for $60/tire at wallyworld.

No guarantee that the beater will be reliable and you still need snow tires even with AWD/4WD.

Best option is winter tires for stang
