>engine braking to save "wear" on your brakes
>wearing out the engine instead

Honestly can't see why people would do this, you don't even save any gas.
>>
Fuck

I do this all the time, you just can't stop once you're doing it for years. I understand the more wear and tear part but is it that bad for the engine/drive train
>>
how is it bad for it when there is no combustion happening? id say the engine is taking a break.
also have you ever shut off the ignition and gave it wide open throttle down hill? you slow down more
>>
>bought an 04 corolla manual brand new
>Has 280k miles on it
>Original motor
>First clutch lasted till 170k, still on second
>Motor still has compression in all could

Sounds like a personal problem desu
>>
>>15977941
Bad for pistons mostly. Really bad if rotary.
>>
>>15977907
Unless you set it in n and turn it off to brake normally, its not doing anymore wear than normal. Probably less because of less combustion.
>>
>>15977954
Less oil/lubricant getting to piston heads causing warped rings.
>>
>>15977907
>engine braking wears the engine

>Facts
It saves fuel since you arent on throttle
Its EASIER on the engine because its not doing any work (not under load)
How is this not obvious?
>>
>>15977907
Engine braking:
>Uses less fuel than neutral or clutch in.
>Sounds nice (depends on vehicle).
>Requires very little effort.

Also.... engines have oil circulating throughout them so there's that. I don't give a single fuck about saving my brakes, but sometimes engine braking slows you down at just the right rate that you don't have to stop at a light b/c it'll turn green just in time.
>>

ok so I drive an automatic (so what), and my question is this
If I'm going down a hill, should I use just my brakes or should I drop to 2nd?
>>
>>15978225
It's fine dropping a gear.
>>
>>15978169
Not under load. Is this a meme?

Engine breaking by down shifting and letting the engine slow down causes much more wear or amiwrong?

Why would it bring more wear if it's in the rev range?
>>
>>15978240
Yes you are wrong.

What if your car backfires like a mad man when you downshift? Unburnt fuel??/?
>>
I'm an automotive engineer and wondering what exactly would cause the wear, given the engine is still getting lubricated and not forced to rev outside the limit. Outside of being shut off and stationary, there's no state in which less wear occurs than while engine braking.
>>
>>15978270
I was assuming he was referring to the quoted "morons" as bus riders.
>>
You do save gas, just so we're all clear
>>
If I've got enough time, I'll engine brake from 5th to 1st, coming to a stop without using the brakes at all. Takes a hell of a long time, though.

I have to do it. If I brake and clutch in at the same time my shitbox's engine stalls so I have to downshift, especially when braking from high speeds.

It made me really good at downshifting really quick. I'm just too lazy to find out what's wrong so I cope with it and pretend it isn't a problem. Much like my alcoholism.

In my MR2 my car could engine brake rather quickly, but my new Fiesta hardly slows down even at like 5000RPM. It's pointless.
>>
>>15977907
you think using the compression cycle that the engine does anyway weather its in gear or not at a controled slow decline is worse? than clutching and dumping 4 grand worth of revs on your conecting rods
>>
>>15978432
This
>>
>>15978169
Just because its not under load doesnt mean its safe for an engine did you even do research on piston rings. Only time its ok is at a low rpm to engine break.

THIS IS HOW TO PROPERLY ENGINE BRAKE:

1. SHIFT INTO NEUTRAL

2. INCREASE REVS TO MATCH EXPECTED REV INCREASE

3. SHIFT INTO LOWER GEAR

NO! You will not wear the clutch this way AT ALL. NO! You will not wear out your synchros!
NO! YOU DO NOT USE YOUR CLUTCH AS THE A BRAKE SURFACE. YOU USE THE LOWER GEAR TO HELP THE CAR SLOW DOWN.
>>
>>15978583
ummm you mean rev match engine bracking is letting the compression stroke slow the vehicle
>>
>>15978622
The safest way to do it
>>
>>15978622
Yeah, he's suggesting double clutching to avoid wearing the synchros
>>
when you are going down hill for miles. you really have no choice but to shift to a low gear and coast on engine braking.

You'll cook your brakes if you try to use them to keep your speed down.

Tell me if anything is wrong with this:
When exiting the freeway let off accelerator before the exit. Leave it in gear (6) open windows, brake as needed nearing end of offramp. Clutch in when revs fall below 1500, pop into neutral and come to complete stop.
>>
>>15978690
You can replace your synchros, but you can't really replace your knee

Really though double clutching is unneeded complication when dealing with a tranny that has synchros.
>>
>>15978773
It's easy and kinda fun and if you break your knee using a clutch it's your fault
>>
>>15977907
> drive jeep for 80k miles

>>15978759
Everything?

Like seriously you just leave it in 6 until it's stalling? I serially hope this is bait.
>>
>>15979088
I clutch in when it falls below 2k. Then it's in neutral until I pull out from the stop.
>>
is there any particular reason for my exhaust popping loudly when I go from engine braking to being back on the throttle?
>>
>>15978759
I would rev match down one or two gears to get a bit more engine breaking, but your way isn't wrong. Why open the windows, though? Seems like a lot of work and noise for a tad bit more drag.
>>
>>15979302
Yeah it's for the air drag. I have power windows and I don't mind the noise.

It was funny I had a manual ranger where my transmission had no fluid in it. I drove it for 500 miles. It locked up when I downshifted on a hill. It sounded like it had a turbo when I drove it with no fluid. It was cool as fuck desu

Yeah, my MR2 can engine break like a champ. It's almost as good as my last car that had a high compression 350 and short gears.

Open windows are fine, but i've never heard of anyone opening them coming off of the freeway to get more drag. It's just a funny image in my head.

Yeah it is pretty weird. May as well open the boot/trunk as an air brake while you're at it

Is this some new fucking meme I'm not aware of?

Obviously engine brake to save wear on your brakes.

>wearing out the engine

You do realise the engine would be running, even if I applied brakes instead of downshifting?

>you don't even save any gas.

Are you stupid, no gas is put in via the injectors after you've let off the throttle over idle engine-speeds.

Applying brakes while holding in your clutch would make the engine use more fuel than you would coasting, as it has to put in fuel to keep it at a steady 800rpm. When you're at 3000rpm, and not applying throttle, the engines momentum will make it spin around on its own.

Are summerfags still here?
>>
>>15980963
And most importantly, it sounds better.
>>
>>15980966
duh, thought that was obvious.
>>
I've never seen anyone actually explaining how engine braking is supposed to cause more wear. You're just using your engine as a compressor, it's doing nothing unnatural.
>>
>>15980970
It doesn't, everyone engine brakes. Engines are designed to do so.
>>
>>15979419
He probably cut his exhaust
>>
Downshifting without rev-matching is considered clutch braking?
>>
>>15977907
I occasionally engine-brake, but I try to either do it in conjunction with regular braking or not at all.

The only time I did it with any frequency was when the brake lines on my '85 Fiero went out but I really wanted to get the fuck out of Bloomington, Indiana.

>>
>>15981113
Cats are in place
Full exhaust with new baffles/mufflers
no cuts, holes, or rust on the exhaust system
seems like the cats/exhaust don't work as every time you down shift the car pops a lot. the higher the rpm the louder the backfire, even with low rpm and a higher gear the car pops in every gear!!!

its a v8
