I kept my Miata and bought a Mazda3s MT hatch for family duty (wife has her own car), but our neighborhood has enough curb space for it to not be a problem. If I didn’t have that room, I’d have sold the Miata. Granted, I’d be more hesitant with an S2000 because subsequent Hondas have been so dull, whereas if I gave up the NB I’d always feel like I could go back for a new one.

The bad news is that the S2000 isn’t the worst thing you’d be giving up. But after several months, parenthood will start to feel worth it and it will keep getting better and better. Takes a while for us guys, though. I was pretty unhappy from months 3 to 8 (the first two were so sleep-deprived that they didn’t feel like real life, and not having to work helped).

The first 8-12 months, an infant car seat (the kind that clips into a base) could conceivably fit, but unlike the Miata I’m not sure the S2000 ever had a switch to disable the passenger air bag – which means it’d be illegal and unsafe. After that time period you need to switch to a fixed rear-facing seat and those are monstrously large. You’ll definitely need a new car then. (As an example, the first kind of seat fit in my wife’s RSX’s back seat, but not the second kind. At that point she got a 1st-gen X1.)

Good luck. Hopefully you can keep it, but it will soon be a lot less important than you think it is.

I'm going to break it down for you OP, I've got a 10 month old. This shit is expensive and tiring like nothing you could possibly imagine. Its also pretty fantastic. You think you've been tired before? You don't know the level of exhaustion you are about to face for the first 3 months. My wife's car is the family car and my car is the 2 seater. If i ever need to take the family out we use the family car, if I need to do something on my own I take the sports car, I can also take the baby in the sports car if needed. However, if this is the case, then he should just "buy her" a car. Get a forester or V70. Put full coverage on it and put the car in your name OP. Then just let her use it. A minivan has a lot of space, but fails every front-end collision test because the engine bay is too short to offer any crumple zones. Also, minivans have bad reliability compared to cars in other segments. If she doesn't have her own car, she probably doesn't have a lot of opportunity to get driving experience. So, she has a high risk associated with driving. Full coverage insurance and the safety features of a Subaru/Volvo will mitigate that risk.

It's usually not that bad. I mean, it is in some ways (no sleep, social life, or relationship with wife for a while) but most of us don't have to deal with power plays or anything like that.

But I'd say...

1) It's very helpful if you each have a car that can handle a car seat. imo, you have the right to be annoyed if your partner doesn't have such a vehicle. I'm in a big city where a lot of people just don't own a car, so I know some dads who wish their wife would stop being such a greenie and just get one.

2) The S2000 won't work for that. There are infant seats (up to 9-12 months old) that can physically fit, but unlike the Miata, the S2000 doesn't have a switch to disable the passenger airbag. The seats you need for kids 0-2 years old will generally not fit at all.

3) With kids, you're going to have to give stuff up. Early on, you might have time for ONE hobby - so between cars, consoles, going out drinking, etc., pick one. You can recover another one or two later but you can't have it all.

4) We guys don't get used to the idea of being a parent until several months in. By then, mom's been ready since sometime during the pregnancy, and she's been waiting for you to grow the fuck up. Her perspective will sometimes be the better one.

5) If money and space permit, keep the car. Early parenthood is hard and it's good to have an escape. But don't be silly about it, either. It's just a car, you can always buy another one later, and you won't be driving it all that much in the near future. Insurance and maintenance for very occasional driving can be hard to justify. And selling it should mean you can get a better family car. The Civic Type R is coming out soon, right?

but if you're serious about selling it, there are nice sport sedans/coupes out there. I'd go for a G35 coupe because I loved the one I test drove, but having only 2 doors might making it difficult to get a baby in and out. On the bright side, when the kid starts growing up they're gonna love the car. What kind of car a kid showed up to school in made a huge difference socially back when I was going to school.
Unfortunately you can't safely have your kid ride with you in a 2 seater, but you could consider getting a Civic or some other cheap sedan/hatchback if you've got the funds. Personally, if the S2k is your car, and your wife has a problem with driving a 5-10 year old civic then that's her problem. A slightly aged inexpensive car is a great point A to B and back to A again car. If she wants anything else then she's not putting family first, she just wants herself a nice luxury car to feel rich in.

I had a friend whose mom carried him around in an 80s celica through his infancy till she sold it when he was about 5 or so. Modern child seats are so big that some cars are inadvisable even though they have back seats. My wife kept her RSX for the first year (during which you can use the smaller snap-in car seats) but then had to switch to something bigger. In other words, a Celica wouldn't work these days.
