But on topic, Lada are okay, they aren't bulletproof or anything, just much more simple to repair and maintain than many contemporary euros, being that they are tooled from hand-me-down fiat machinery, they are from a pre-electrowizardry era.

I'll chip in.

I'm from Lithuania. Ladas are a fucking joke when it comes to reliability. Really, lets not compare it to Jap cars. Similar to old French cars in terms of mechanical stuff.

Grandpa had one since 1974. It is still running, but he kept working on it constantly for over 40 years.

Ladas are robust cars, but cmon, don't compare it to actual working vehicles.

Pic related, the sought after one. Apparently, the best lada.
>>
>>15965550

2101 are sought after because they were the original Ladas and long out of production.

Hello and welcome to my blog.
Love the Niva, we used to have many in the UK but they have almost disappeared. I've had a 1997 one for over 6 months now with the 1.7i SPI engine which is very nice to work on. The electric system is simple, most problems being fixed with bashing the fuse-box or shouting at it in Russian to scare it into working. The transmission rustles my jimmies slightly as it whines and whirs like a fucking helicopter. Paint quality is sporadic but if your frisky with a welder and have a shit tonne of rust-converter, seam sealer and under seal the underside can weather out quite nicely. The clutch is powered by some soviet gnopnik magic as as much fettling you give it its still fucking useless. The interior is as inspiring as a KGB cell block, but enjoys taking a beating and is wipe clean for any mud and shit. People laugh at it, I tell them to Google it and they are quite impressed. I could see it being very popular with farmers if it was re-introduced in RHD but the EU emissions Jew and the UK environment commies would let it back. Parts are cheap with I think is to do with the manufacturing 'quality' and the lack of a tariff on parts from outside the EU (?). Anyway the Lada is like a well meaning simpleton, you can't exactly be angry at its simple goat-farming ways.
>>
>>15965603
So basically, Ladas are "reliable" in the terms that they are simple cars, simple to work on, with a lot of cheap parts to replace everything.

Wish we had something like that in the US. A cool go-to car you can fix all yourself, boomer-style.

How's the economy with those carbs btw? I'd imagine with euro petrol prices you're basically shelling it out
>>
Soviet automakers could not afford to refresh their lineup every year, or two like the Americans could, so instead they opted out to make a model that would stay in production for 10 years with only minor changes.
And they also stuck to using old, proven technology that does not break. Like kingpin instead of mcpherson.

Cars where simple, made for tough roads, and made to last.

Almost all over car makers would completely change the design every 18 months or so, so they could try new things. If something proved to be unreliable, it would be completley replaced. They could not do so in the CCCP, so everything that was used was proven to be reliable for years earlier.

That is why Soviet cars can stay on the road for so long.

Why Cuba is full of Soviet cars, and US cars when they were made to the same standards.

USSR had planned economy, it worked (or rather, it didn't work) on completely different principles.

>>15965992
>Soviet automakers could not afford to refresh their lineup
Wrong, they were never concerned with profits since everything was sold below the "real" price for the price the government told them to sell it for and they received money from the government to keep the factories running. They refreshed the lineup when the party told them to. Which wasn't often because nobody was concerned about improving things that can make cars more comfortable/luxurious since that's not very socialistic.
>>
>>15966118
>Wrong
NO U

>Soviet planned economy could not afford to match the American tradition of altering the car for every model year, nor were its centralised factories physically capable of doing so. Thus a more conservative measure was taken, where a typical car would last 7–10 years on the conveyor
>>
>>15965342
Maybe because there isn't much to brake? It doesn't mean that they don't brake at all, it's that they are so primitive that the fix might be simple. And is that a good thing? It depends on what kind of person you are. These Russian cars have poor level of comfort and dynamics, and.. everything. The build quality is just.. soviet/10.

>>15965368
A family member of mine had a brand new Lada as a work car a while ago. In one winter morning the drivers door fell off. Things like that just might happen in a while.

>>15965550
Sup', brother!
These Ladas were acceptable in their time. Unfortunately the Soviet regime wasn't good for innovation.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdLtFnS5b0s
>>
As a rule, basic cars last longer than complex cars. Extras are just more things to break and go wrong. Older Russian cars are simple, less to go wrong.
>>
>>15966197
Yeah, I want to add that even if there was no need to overcomplicate cars (which is a good thing) there was also no need to improved them so after the union collapsed, Russian car drivers (and makers) were overwhelmed by how much better foreign cars were. "foreign car" became synonimous with "good car". And it was possible to import used ones cheaply - anything from BMW 318 to the R-32 GTR. That was truly the golden age for cars and for the country. Domestic makers stood no chance and gradualy went bankrupt, some were bought out.
Unfortunately with 2000s came the current era of everything being forbidden, ginormous import taxes once again allowed locals to continue producing stuff without competition (not just in cars) and sealed off the acceess to good cars for people who aren't rich (well, you can buy used ones domestically). In this protectionism-smothered economy, the situation is becoming ironicaly simillar to the late Soviet Union.

Errm, economy, thats the main issue.
I'm in the process of repairing some wiring from the sensors to the fuel injection computer so I can say its the true mpg but what I am getting at the moment is 16 mpg where it 'could' average out nearer to 30 but I can never see it happening. Where I live I'm paying anywhere between £1.11 to £1.17 per liter of petrol so It is becoming quite expensive quite fast. But heck, if I wanted economy I'd drive a Prius.

>>15969417
American cars are fairly respected, but they're very rare because they were hard to import in the 90s. The only way was the normal "buy in Europe, drive home, sell it for more" and not that many cars were sold in Europe either since Euros don't really appreciate huge mechanically simplistic cars. Domestically assembled Ford Focus is the most popular modern car though, but it's not really the same. In any case, I sometimes see Dodge Rams and other giant offroaders, some people buy them my dad wants to do the same because he despises fuel economy and shit. Still most people would just buy a Land Cruiser instead.
Cars like Mustang though, yeah, those basically don't exist here. I don't think Ecoboost is even officially sold here. Saw a Camaro recently though (the one where you can't see anything from inside).

Should probably look in ex-ussr states, I'd imagine you'd have better luck there.
My lada is a 90's one so it's not likely to see any rise in value ever, and it's retired strictly for summer cruising purposes and something I can properly kick around in the touge without having to worry about hitting a tree or two. Fuck trusting it getting me home in shitty weather when it's almost undriveable in winter and likes to develop retarded faults like shaking its carburetor loose or fuel pump randomly stopping working

You want to drive it to UK and I give you some currency for it?
>>
>>15970653
Not really, no. And you probably could do better than my lowered, welded diff sportsda that's awaiting for me to find the inspiration to fix the aftermath of letting someone who can't handle the powah drive it. Luckily it's just steelwork but still can't be bothered. And figuring out where all the electricity is going because it sure as hell isn't staying in the battery. And turning them steelies.

that's the appeal of it though. In your average Lada, nothing is ever 100% functional but nothing is completely broken either. Everything is easy as shit to replace when it breaks, too.

Nah, she likes it rough. Or I guess I am being kind since I'm keeping it running and to myself instead of just leaving it to rot or selling it to some folk racer
Oh and we've found a upside in the 'fugees. They buy junkers in russia to cross the border, abandon them here to start yelling assyilum aleikum and they get auctioned off by the border control. Hundreds of them. For pennies

>I have a fridge that is working for the last 30 years constantly. I hear about people that own a 30 y.o. washer or a vacuum. This is truly indestructable.
But this is actually true, my parents old refrigerator just worked for 20 years while their new Samsung has broken down 4 times in the last 5 years
