OP is a fag and will never make either of these work with a subaru gearbox and awd if hes asking which is best, so fuck him but it is an interesting discussion.

Two best 1.6L NA are the SR16VE at 175hp and B16B at 185hp. There is an N1 version of the SR16 with 197hp but they are kinda unobtanium. Also I believe the B16 is a lighter and more intelligently designed engine than the SR. SR can be more easily made to work with RWD since it was available in RWD chassis and the B series spins the opposite way of most RWD engines.

B6 is a low compression lump of pig iron that can handle boost, and is pretty ordinary without it. B series are intelligently designed to be efficient and make alot of power for their weight NA. Don't act like they aren't well engineered.

What makes a B16 "well engineered"? It has an intermittent 11mm+ lift race camshaft stock. It has a below average BSFC on the low cam and a horrible one on the high cam. It has pencil rods and a weak block. It can't make torque because it was never designed to. It makes less HP than a Geo metro 3cylinder for the Geo's entire RPM band (6k?).
It's engineered..... to be a brutal compromise for the purpose of being a one trick pony. It's cool and fun and sensational but it's volumetric efficiency is well below average on the low cam, above average on the high cam (which is it's only pro) and thermally efficient nowhere.

You're going to run into far more trouble than you think with this criteria... for starters, there aren't really any new 1600cc engines that you can buy in crate these days. And the only 1600's capable of 10k that I can think of are old as shit (B16, 4A-GE with some balancing and cams). You're going to have a hell of a time finding a bell housing adapter to mate one of these engines to the Subaru gearbox, or assuming you get another gearbox, I'm not sure what's out there in terms of boxes that offer AWD and will adapt to the engine.

Lastly, a 1600 is going to be absolutely fucking shite in terms of being able to move a car that weight. You will have NO torque.

Since OP said he was planning to ditch the stock transmission I thought I'd suggest a potential alternative.

Then again, Audi gear would need a whole bunch of custom work (mounts, shafts, linkages, etc) that you'd have to be completely retarded to pick it over the Subaru gear that's already there.

Revving to 10k is really high. Look into what other people in the class are running.

Cheapest option would be a 1.6 liter shitbox engine, and build it. Maybe a Miata engine could be found cheaply.

All I can think of with an engine that small are tiny hatch backs, and turbo engines in sedans. Tons of motorcycle engines under 1.6 liters, but I wouldn't think they'd be much good in a car like an Impreza.

As far as a transmission goes. I drive a 5 speed for a daily and doing highway speeds makes me angry when the revs are at 2 grand to go 60.... Get a 6 speed. One more gear = more room for top speed and better fuel economy.
