>>15944129
post you local craigslist.
I really doubt you can get a running LS for under 1k.
>>15944129
holy fuck how poor/delusional are you?
Understandably you're still in high school bud damn can't your parents throw down a bit?
ride your bike to work a little more kiddo, sell your xbox, at least save like 2k
5th and even better 5.5th gen maxima have a lot of power and pretty comfy.
SE for tighter suspension, GLE for softer luxury.
Sometimes they are 1k.
>>15944129
>super reliable with low maintenance costs
Unless you're in the northeast this isn't happening, assuming you are it will be super reliable until you get into a wreck and the rusty frame explodes and you are killed in a mild fender bender. Go for it OP.
>>15944129
>>15944167
do this
you *might* be able to find a 90's civic/corolla that's not a total piece of shit for 1k if you jump on a deal as soon as it's posted, there's plenty of brown people looking for the same shit as you
>>15944188
This. Do not do the stupid thing and decide to lease a car when you don't have the cash flow to support a high rate.
I pay $300/mo for a base 06 corolla and it's killing me because I made that mistake so you don't have to. Bike to work like I did, wait 7 months saving money and drop it on a reliable beater, ensure you have the money for registration and tax if it's over $4000. And inspection. And your tags. And your post-purchase shop inspection, and your post-purchase full tune-up and preventative maintenance (tires, all fluids, all filters, brakes, lights).

well I currently have an all around car that I can easily get 7-9 grand for and I want to sell it to get two cars
the reason I'm trying to shoot for 1 grand or less is because I just took on my own insurance and can only afford liability so I want to get a car that would be worth less than the deductible I would've had if i had collision/comp
gonna get a 986 boxster s with the rest plus a bit of savings or financing, that is unless I find a way to buy the beater out of pocket

maxima. they are peppy and I had one that the new owner still drives today with 360000+ miles
>>15944129
You can't find a running LS400 in my neck of the woods for less than $2000, and all of those have been destroyed by redguards. I'd recommend anything buick from the late 90's.

lmao are u 16 OP?
any car at that price will need some work hope you've planned for that.
Plan a minimum of $2500 for something decent.
bout to call this guy
if it really is just a head gasket then a can of bars leaks should do just fine
http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/cto/5813173742.html
>>15945874
pls no. mechanic in a can never works. then you have to pay for the repair on a transverse v6. only consider i4 or i5.
>>15945874
might as well rent a fucking car for the couple of weeks that bars leaks would hold off the inevitable.
Not OP but how much should I save up before even attempting to find a decent example of ls400 in Ohio?
>>15945874
Jesus Christ you're so fucking retarded
Die nigger
>>15944129
Where are you going to get a running LS400 for $1000? Tell me, I'll be there.
>>15946239
Ohio here. Honestly $1500 will get you a solid LS400 here if you know how to negotiate. Find one with rust on the rear wheel arches and use that to push it down.
>>15944129
Mercedes w201 190. Aim for a 2.3 petrol.
>>15945874
You live in orange and expected to find anything good for a grand? Are you retarded?
>>15944129
You're going to need at least 3k for what you're asking, 2k if you get insanely lucky. Find yourself a 1997-2005 Buick LeSabre and have the fucking trans looked at by someone who knows what the fuck they're doing. The transmission is reliable, but not if it isn't serviced. Try to find 120k miles or less. I've gotten two with <100k for 2200, and 3200. Take care of the bastard, and it will last forever.
Can I piggy back on this thread and get opinions on a good budget $5000 car?
Looking for a hatchback or a 4 door sedan
the more reliable the better
obviously want to try for a private seller to avoid dealer fees ect

Shut up and buy a Civic
>>15944190
Can't say I can recommend this. I just went down the path of buying and fixing up a gen 5, bought for $1600, two owner car with 142k, some body rot but better than most northern cars, and a bit cosmetically challenged. I ended up selling it pretty quick. These things simply aren't quite built to last compared to something like a Toyota or even Honda of the same time period. Mine turned out to have some pretty bad looking lower rad support rust, a 2-3 upshift slip, shot rear trailing arm bushings (hydraulic fluid leaks out, but they don't tear), the car never really rode that well despite me putting on a full set of quick struts.
I ended up polishing it up and flipping it on craigslist (from whence it came), and thankfully atleast broke even in terms of parts cost.
>>15948323
plus they're plain fugly, Wtf Nissan, sentras and maximas of that era are ass
>>15948323
Ended up buying this 1996 ES300 instead. Same $1600, 203k miles but it feels like 3 times the car. Much better interior, less rust-prone, quieter ride. The maxima with 142k had totally shot suspension hence the strut replacement. The ES by comparison has all original suspension components, and still rides pretty darn well. Just replaced some $20 rear swaybar bushings to get rid of an annoying clunk in the rear.
>>15947136
> Take care of the bastard, and it will last forever.
Which is unfortunate because it's near the worst thing I've ever had to drive. Not that comfy, audio sucks, any fit/fiinsh would be totally degraded and alll the coating worn off all the controls, and it rides/drives/handles like Uncle Buck's Mercury.
It's super reliable in that it won't leave you stranded, but everything else will break and go to shit.
>>15948344
OP, please be aware that your $1000 purchase price is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of running costs. This very tidy and clean ES that I bought with full maintenance records and a single diligent owner since 1998 (basically the best case scenario that you can possibly find) needed brakes all around, will need new tires before winter, and is due for a timing belt job. Additionally I will need to investigate an intermittent power steering issue and an ABS light that is on. I consider that a very easy and short laundry list for an older car, but I will probably end up spending about $1200ish all said and done in terms of parts and some of the labor (outsourcing ABS diagnostics and t-belt to my brother).
Don't be car-poor. Save up to cover the inevitable cost of repairs and maintenance.
op here, the budget has been raised to $2k
>>15948381
add $1000 for repairs and maintenance catch up immediately after repair, $1500 if someone else is doing the work.
>>15948323
>Buy likely beat to shit car for cheap
>complains that it was beat to shit
All you had to do was fix the broken stuff, you double nigger. Not a hard concept
>>15948457
The point is that the Lexus that was driven in a similar northern climate all its life and is infact 4 years older with 60k more miles did NOT have structural rust, did NOT need some balljoints and impossible to replace suspension bushings, the OE struts still have life left in them.
Yes with enough dedication and enough money thrown at it everything could be fixed. But for the same initial cost you can buy an unequivocally better car, both in terms of durability of components, but also overall quality and refinement.
Double nigger.
>>15948526
So you had bad suspension parts and expected quick struts to fix it. Noice
Point is a neglected car is shit no matter the brand
>>15949866
The car rides inherently stiffer than the ES, and the remaining issue was the trailing arm bushings. They are fluid filled from the factory, and short of buying the entire rear axle assembly or pressing in stiffer aftermarket polyurethane units, there is no fix. That's what im saying, the ES has none of these issues despite being driven in the same locale, but for a longer time and more miles, yet held up remarkably better. How fucking dense are you?
just got 2003 Chevy s10 as a daily for $800, 2.2l 120k miles. How well did i do?
>>15949911
Maxima is sporty, wew who knew.
>short of these 2 fixes there's no fix

http://hartford.craigslist.org/cto/5771548624.html
id buy it but the fact that it has a welded diff i just know it wouldnt make a decent daily esp for the winter.
>>15950335
Just get a stock differential and swap it in when you have the new transmission put in.
>>15950245
>short of these 2 fixes there's no fix
Exactly, there's no reasonable economic way to fix it. Who's going to drop $1k+ on a new OEM rear axle assembly on a car worth $2k? And the aftermarket route results in an even worse ride. Contrast this with the Lexus where a) it doesn't need any of this because the IRS doesn't have any critically worn bushings and b) if there were, I can order any individual control arm without a problem.
It's worth mentioning that part of the poor ride comes from the fact that Nissan couldn't be bothered to even use a true IRS on the 4th and 5th gen cars (3rd gen had it). That's just plain decontenting.
You haven't touched on the cosmetic and structural rust issues (lower rad support) that 4th and 5th gen Maximas have, or the sloppy shifting transmission that 00-01 maxima autos suffer from (the fix is a new solenoid pack and/or trans control unit)
Sorry man, but Nissans of this era are seriously GM tier shitty in many ways. I love the VQ30 motor, don't get me wrong, but that's the only good thing about these cars. I'm sure if I had a 5spd 4th gen from a salt-free environment I may very well hold a different opinion.
>>15950388
im not the most mechanically inclined person but id be willing to try it. how hard is it to do?
