can i buy a 1973 Ford Torino 4 door cheap in the US?

>>
>>15942887
Whelp, I got about $8300 in the bank right now and I can save up to $1000/month if I live frugally. But I blow a lot of money on weekends with my gf. Let's say no more than $4-5K but preferably less. It just has to run because I live in an apartment for at least 6 more months.

C10 is an interesting idea. Maybe I could put a car body on the frame and use it for rallycross.
>>
>>15942999
Well hopefully one for a straight 6 or whatever comes in the falcon/ Elco, I've only worked on 4 stroke bike carbs and that's not that hard but I've been told car carbs are a bit different.

>>15942989
working on a carb, for example rebuilding one, is not too hard. Tuning it well on the other hand is not so easy
>>
>>15943009

why not use a truck body on the frame. Build it as it goes. the other option for that much would be a bitching foxbody or dodge dart.

1986 Elky. Center of the hood where there's that elevated crease has a big gash in it and it is cracking more. Lots of bubbles forming in other areas too. I figure spice it up and get a new hood with a big cowl induction. Not sure if I want 2" or 4" cowl induction. I'd love to look like pic related so I might go 4". I don't really understand why so many people choose to build 302's when they max out at ~300whp n/a and the blocks can only handle ~400hp.
A chevy 350 can make ~400whp with similar mods and can handle much more power.
Not trying to offend any Ford fans here but what makes the 302 so desirable for builds? Seems underpowered compared to the 351w, too.

Considering saving up to buy a project Mopar vehicle off CL, such as a satellite, duster, or demon. Thoughts? What's the best older Mopar vehicle I can find for cheapish in running condition?

>such as a satellite, duster, or demon. Thoughts?
Satellites can be cheap, duster can maybe be cheap ( bought one for $2k) Demon's i hear are expensive.
>>
>>15956474
I've noticed Demons seem to be inherently more expensive. Why is that? They're the exact same thing as Dusters.

>>15956574
>That's very true. After '73 didn't they put in 360s? Were those better than the 340s or should they be avoided?
Yeah they dropped the 340.
360 isn't a bad engine on paper, it's perfectly fine but it was never as good as the 340.
The 360 was mainly used as a heavy duty engine.
Finding an actual 340 engine nowadays is hard, they're pretty rare but 360s are incredibly easy to find, and fortunately, easy to get a lot of power from.
>>
>>15956579
I'd probably want to build a 383 or something to slam in there, anyways. How rare are these Dusters to find with a manual transmission? Never seem to see them near me.

A lot. And yeah you'll probably need to do that.

Theoretically you /could/ pull all of the plugs, drain and refill the oil and let the engine spin for a little to clear it out but depending on how bad the flooding is your need to drain and clean the tank and fuel system as well.

Pretty much going to be the Dodge Dart/Plymouth Scamp. They can still be gotten in ok condition in the $5K range.

A little more unusual but in the same price range wold be the Dodge Aspen R/T and 76-79 Plymouth Road Runner that are on the F body platform. Harder to find though because they rusted away even faster than usual.

Furies are getting pricy because it is still seen as a muscle car by semi enthusiasts. It may be the same underneath as a New Yorker or 300, but it looks more like a commoners cruiser. Compare the side profile of a 67 Fury and a 67 Belvedere and you will see why.

As well, most Furies available had at least a 383 with some Fury 1 and Fury 2s getting 318s. Mine came with a 440 Super Commando and optional Sure Grip 3.55s out back. I get your pain though, I got mine going on 2 years ago for under 800 and the same car has now shot up to over 4500 locally (it wasn't running or driving) for a shell with an untested longblock and trans.

I just installed the new fuel pump and a new fuel filter on the 280ZX and it still won't start. I pulled the fuel line from the rail and used a catch can for the fuel while someone KOEO'd the Z and barely a tiny little trickle of fuel comes out and the fuel pump clicks off after barely any time. I decided to bypass the circuit with a jumper wire straight from battery + to pump + and I got a nice strong blast of fuel.

This means the pump is physically working but something else is interrupting the circuit. The pump barely gets a moment of power as evidenced by the tiny squirt, so it's getting power for sure, but it feels like there's some safety measure in place that's interrupting the flow...

Gonna do some research and see what's what. If anyone has anything to add, let me know

Mig welders are pretty cheap, and learning to use them is pretty easy. If you can't find reproduction floor pans you can just buy some sheet metal and go from there. If you don't want to go the welding route I've heard of body shops GLUING new body panels on cars. so apparently epoxies have gotten pretty good in recent times.

I've literally never heard of this car make, and I'm too drunk to google it, but is it unibody or full frame?
>>

>If you can't find reproduction floor pans you can just buy some sheet metal and go from there
sounds fun. however i don't think i'll ever trust a floor that's glued in no matter how strong it is so this looks like a good excuse to get some welding equipment.

can't find it on wikipedia but knowing mitsubishi i bet it's a unibody.

The glues they have these days are stronger than welds.

>3d printing

It's easy to make floorpans, even if you want to reproduce the factory pattern. I made a passenger footwell section for my car in about 15 minutes with a shear and a wheel. 3d printing is not relevant to recreating a stamped piece.

I like welding too, but adhesives have surpassed welds in modern manufacturing as far as raw strength goes, especially when heat and pressure can compromise or work harden the panels being welded (aluminum cars).

How is this for a test of strength? It seems a few people in this thread don't know how cars have been put together for the last 70 years. Floorpans aren't seam welded in, they are spot welded for the most part, same with the other 95% of a unibody car. Spot welds put stress on one tiny area, plus as I said it's heat and pressure which work hardens the material to a degree. Spot welds are also performed by robots, which can't reach some areas, or it's too expensive to have them do it. Adhesives can go nearly anywhere, plus you have a huge mating surface. Even if you assumed that a weld and adhesive had the exact same strength for a given area, it's obviously not even remotely possible to have a 1 inch wide seam weld going around the entire perimeter of a structural panel, while it's trivially easy to do with an adhesive.

>Weiand Stealth 8020wnd intake
>1985 steel gear manual transmission mustang distributor
>edelbrock 1404 500cfm (assuming it will work on an auto transmission)

what I need to determine
>what decent street roller cam
>what converter if any
>what rockers
>what valvesprings
>what electric inline fuel pump
research is to follow. any suggestions are appreciated

I agree. would be a fun driver. the only thing I would do would be like an add-on over/under drive unit for better ratios. Looks great though. this is the car I went to prom in.
>>
>>15966434
Try to find a Car Craft or Hot Rod mag budget build and just copy their specs as much as you can. Saves the guesswork and a lot of times they will have tried different cams, rocker ratios, etc. and found what works best already.
>>
>>15966505
I have just been going off specs from summit, but I should do that. as for intake, carbs and distributor those just are good. what cam are you running in your mercury?

Good luck with that. At least as far as genuine Motorcraft distributors go since I got one of the last ones available. Back in 1993! Gotta watch the remans since they come out with whatever gear is handy at the time. You'll probably end up with an MSD or something, but please no ugly-ass DUI distributor.

The engine is 100% stock, from the looks of it the intake manifold hasn't even been removed since it left the factory, still has the factory water pump and generator too. Here's a good article

>>
>>15966434
>what decent street roller cam
>what valvesprings
Cam chosen will determine that since it will have a recommended spring rate. Beehives are a bit better at controlling float if any are available that fit the rate recommendation.
>what converter if any
Cam chosen will again determine this.

As for the cam itself, you're going to have to decide what characteristics you want the engine to have and decide from there. In general though you'll come down to two choices and it's usually better to go with the smaller of the two.

So you'll be looking at something in the 225 degree @ .050 range then. That'll have a noticeable lope at idle so a higher stall converter will be a good thing. You'll definitely want to get with a converter company. Don't buy an off-the-shelf unit because those almost never do well. As for low end, it'll feel a bit soggy compared to when it comes on the cam around 4K. Gear will be a necessity. If it were a Fox I'd say nothing less than 4.10's though if this thing is a bunch lighter you could get away with a bit less.

Car people are like that.

Look at those in the modern world of painting, they still take their time to admire a Rembrandt, or a Picasso, or even fuckin Grandma Moses's vagina flowers.
Its the same thing here. It doesn't matter if its an old 240z, or a first gen 911, or even Carol Shelby's personal Mustang. It is a piece of our cultural history. But it is a piece that (atleast in theory) you can drive. You can sit in history, and for a brief moment you can even feel the feels of those that have came and went before.

I don't think this is the right place for this, since 90s probably isn't considered classic, but I've got a 95 Chrysler Le Baron and last night I left the lights on when I was working. I got a jump start and made it home, but the car wouldn't start up in the morning, so I got another jump start, waiting about thirty minutes after getting started, but the problem is I had to hit the gas to get the thing to turn on. I left it running for about a half hour, turned it off, and same thing. To turn on my car now I have to hit the ignition and give it gas at the same time. This wasn't something I needed to do before and I've got barely any knowledge of cars. Anyone have any ideas what the issue is? Something with the alternator maybe?

Sticking with the LS2/T56 plan. Half of the issue is that I don't have the shop access for that kind of work until next year anyway.

I'm also toying with the idea of swapping a 5.3 truck block into the Commando, since it's already got a TH350 in it.

I've seen LS2/T56 combos go for $5k, whereas LS3/TR6060 combos usually go for at least $8k.

Also really starting to think I'm going to convert it back to a proper hardtop, since I'll have to repaint the car anyway.

I had one of those in high school. 262ci and a total dog. Like a dumbass, I spent $900 (all I had at the time) getting the engine rebuilt (fused piston rings from too much sitting), and then the body rotted away.

Interesting features for its time, though. electronic ignition, unibody construction, etc.

No Anon.
You're just looking at one car with some pedigree and thus a jacked up price because it's a "collector's car".

There's a lot of reasons. I like the fact that they're relatively simplistic so I can work on them intuitively. I think most people just like how they look as well. Muh veeate. Plus there's a history to them, and they keep their value. Etc.

And this is just me, but I am a 20-something NEET for the time being and I'm basically not secure enough with myself to drive around in a brand new Mustang. It would be obvious that I didn't pay for it myself and I'd feel like a tool.

A 2cv in France is actually pretty expensive for what it is. You'll have to count 6-12k€ for a pretty small car. All things considered that is quite a lot especially taking into account that a Peugeot 204 or 304, a Renault 4L will be in the 3-7k range and when getting arround 10k you get into Traction territory.
>>

That's the eternal question, really.
The Traction outcools them all though. It's one of the few cool french cars along with the DS, the Alpines and the Type H (though that might just be muh nostalgia goggles for this one)
>>
>>15976801
Not legally. I have yet to get it inspected so it can be insured in Canada. That might happen in January, one of my co-workers is going to be provincially certified to do inspections soon, so he'll just do it for me. Otherwise I'd have to spend around $1100 for a new windshield just cause it has a small crack in it
>>

>>15976805
Ds and sm are on another level tbqh. I'm more of a tin snail guy than a Renault 4 guy. It just has more character and I love the look. Traction is Sexy as hell though. I wish we had more French cars in America, but they just never caught on.
>>
>>15976823
I haven't done much lately. Still need to get some interior trim on and the door panels back on. Gave up on the windows for now, since I have the driver window working and most of the time, the back windows working, I'll just save up for new switches, then continue with new plugs and wiring for the switches.
