does /o/ have any opinions of the mk3 supra? i know you guys love the mk4, but surely this has some similar merits yes? or is it the older brother that people forgot existed?
>>
slow, head gaskets, pigfat as fuck, shit suspension geometry, zero turn radius, can't turn.
they also look like shit in my opinion but a lot of people defend them because they think they look good

I think most of /o/ generally agrees that the mk3 is good. It's one of the few old japanese cars that can be bought for cheap and is pretty easy to make it fast. Looks good too. The bad things are the headgasket in the 7m engines can blow if the headbolts are not torqued properly. More of a matter of when, not if if the problems not fixed. It's also very heavy and it's turning and suspension leave a lot to be desired. But at the same time it is a GT car so quick handling and weight was not a prime concern when it was designed I guess.
Overall, if you have the time and a bit of cash, it's a solid car if you're looking to buy one. Just be prepared to get your hands dirty when you have to fix something on it.

Pic related, my mk3
>>
>>15883744
would be a nice first car?
>>
>>15883570
just bought one and fixed it up. pretty solid, heavy, not very fast, still cool. i like it.
>>
>>15883575
>shit suspension geometry

quite the opposite, it's pretty great.

this idea came from a blogger trying hard to fill the last couple entries in his "top ten" list, and somehow it stuck.

>>15883779
no, an old japanese sports car that requires regular maintenance (and solid tuning knowledge) would not make a nice first car
>>
>>15883570

can we finally presume, that after 30 years, all the headgaskets on the 7m have already blown and been replaced?

I love that car, man. I've been lusting over them for a long time. Hopefully I'll find one one day, but until then I'll just be jealous
>>
>>15883570
How hard would it be to make one handle well? More than just coilovers and an alignment?
>>
>>15884628
Maybe? Both my 7mgtes had stock head gaskets but arp studs. I'm not sure whether either of them were original though. Now I have a 2mm HKS stopper in my built block
>>
Supra is my favorite car of all time. its a grand tourer type of car. 7mgte can easily reach 500bhp with proper mods. I have a 1jz mk3 that hits 350bhp with light mods. Handling is crips. Ride quality is superb. My advise is to ditch the 7m and go with a 1jz or 2jz
>>
Heavy, wide. I don't care how much hate it gets, I like it
>>
>>15884860
1j and 2j are only really good if your power goals are 350-450hp. Anything under 350hp the 7m can make with bolt-ons. Beyond 350hp the 7m needs upgraded internals, while the 1j and 2j can make up to 450hp with bolt-ons, probably closer to 550hp for the 2j. However beyond these power numbers all 3 will need built internals, but can handle 900+hp, so save the extra $2500 from a 2j or 1j since a built 7m can do all the same stuff.
>>
>>15885073
2jz can make 900hp+ without opening the engine
>>
>>15883570

overweight garbage

also, what people forget moreso than this cars existance. is that it's lighter than nearly all other cars this market was meant to tackle at the time, being the american ponycar GT car market.

also realize that this was toyota's top of the line car. lexus wasn't made for another four years. this was the most expensive car you could buy from toyota, and a lot of it went into luxury.

if you don't own one and are stout on benchracing then you're not going to understand people's love for the car. but i've never seen someone who's owned one of these and hated it for any reason.

>>
>>15885409
Well said. One thing I love about the supra is how much it can haul. I've gone on several road trips and camping trips in my supra. Highway driving in mountains is great.
>>
>>15885432
7M can make 1000hp too. but it does have to be built.
>>
Rarely riced. That's already a bonus.
>>
>>15886408
I found one with the engine and tranny out for 3500. 5k with the engine and tranny but I figured it's a solid project since it's mint. No rust. Thoughts?
>>
>>15885417
This does not apply to any sort of reliable engine.

The 2jz is great, the block is superb...but don't be as bad as GTR fanbois and live in complete delusion land.

Yes, it can make 1000hp on a single dyno run and then shit itself a few days later.

Or you can build it with forged internals for a reasonable price and MAINTAIN that 1000hp.

You cannot have both reliability and massive power on a stock block.

Also, massive single turbos are not driveable or fun on the street.
>>
>>15886565
You speak the truth. This applies to other engines as well, like the RB26 and LS engines.

They are fantastic engines, but any fanboy who claims they magically hit 1000hp and maintain it is a liar.

Occasionally, they can do it for a couple dyno runs when not under load.

You NEED forged internals and acid drenched block to be reliably putting out power on any engine without fear it will shit itself at any given moment.

This is not to knock any of the engines either, the fact they can reach such high power for even a few dyno runs on stock internals (with the block holding) is what's fantastic.
>>
>>15885409
It is heavier than a turd gen, fox body, almost any other car of the time and is only about 100-150lb lighter than a 300gt VR4. my 5spd targa turbo weighed 3670 on a truck stop scale.

>>
>>15886547
Not in the US, so can't really tell you what's considered a good price in dollars, sorry. But yeah, the body in a good condition is more important since various you can use various Toyota JZ engines and other internals.
mark2/chaser/cresta/crown/supra80/soarer30 all of those have compatible parts
>>
>>15887561
i paid 2200 for mine almost mint condition just some clearcoat damage on the roof and a tiny spot of rust under the paint thats coming up about 2.5 square inches, needed about 1000 dollarydoos of parts and a solid 3 weeks of installing and waiting on deliveries since it was sitting for eight years. grandma owned, bought a caddy and never touched it again, 114k miles
>>
>>15884628
It depends who you buy one from. I got mine from the original owner who was an older lady. I doubt she knew what a headgasket is.

>>15884830
Stiffening the suspension apparently vastly improves the handling on these things, so that would be a start.

>>15886547
3500 for the body would be reasonable if it's in absolutely mint condition. Putting a motor and tranny in would cost you probably at least 2-3k depending on what you put in which would bring it up to around the cost of a clean one with an engine and tranny already in it. So it's up to you if you want to put some work into it or just spend all the money at once and get one already running.
>>
>>15887994
stance just makes the car look damaged to me.

and it shouldn't even go on a car like that.

but fun fact- the gooks love the mk3 supras for some reason, they're thousands more over in japland.

mine slid just fine, turbo has a factory lsd, put a weir kit in it and drifted on command. the only problem I had was a tendency to push in tight corners unless I flicked it in and skidded the whole way. best in fast sweepers, they are a gt but dont do a terrible job when you ask them to be a sports car.

I agree, I prefer the look of the car stock. That was just the first mk3 picture I found saved on my computer.
I didn't know that they were so popular in Japan though, that's pretty interesting.
Another interesting fact is that Kazunori Yamauchi, the creator of Gran Turismo was apparently inspired to make the game series after seeing a mk3 supra when he was younger.
>>
>>15890358
when i say thousands more, i mean both in ammount (of the 1js) and price tag.

the street racer's tax is much higher over there, like to the point that that car and an r32 are sold at the same price.

just to think that the gooks hold the mk3 in same regard of the GTR boggles my mind.
>>
>>15890390
maybe the mk3 has some potential to it that we haven't unlocked yet. is it the sleeping god machine?
>>
>>15890423
they got the 3.0 turbo A and the 2.5 gt twin turbo R

I want one too.
>>
>>15890390
I guess it's because they got a version with a 1jz as stock rather than the 7m like we got in North America. At one point the Turbo A supra was considered the fastest production car in Japan at one point iirc, so with that in mind I could see how they would compare it with the skyline
>>
>>15890358

>>
>>15890423

Everything you posted is wrong except the headgaskets and you should feel bad about it

OP, read the fucking sticky, I made sure LPG included the MK3 for a reason. Dont buy one unless you are a seasoned mechanic with an empty garage and money to burn. It will have problems, and it isn't cheap to fix either. Kids think buying a MK3 Supra is a shortcut to the big leagues of street cred, bypassing the lower Civics, 240's and Miatas. It's a commitment to keep it running and driving properly.

TLDR buy a Civic

OP needs something simple, forgiving, cheap, and with good aftermarket to satisfy the tuning bug, and a Civic fits the bill perfectly. The last thing he needs is an expensive to maintain, difficult to work on old GT car with a ton of advanced wiring systems

All my other Toyota's were too, but the MK3 is not a good choice for a first car/poorfag car. It's like dating a supermodel: don't be fooled by her good looks and seductive hips, because she'll suck every cent out of you, bitch and moan a lot, and if she isn't treated right, she won't do a damn thing
>>
>>15891573

The greatest thing about the 7M is that it is a torque monster. The 2jz is a perfectly square engine with a bore and stroke of 86mm. The 7M has a bore and stroke of 83mm by 91mm. This makes a much torquier motor. There is a guy in my town who has a 2jz swapped MK3 Supra and it makes 600 whp and about 450 ftlb. His old 7M had 350 whp but almost 500 ftlb. This makes it a very fun street motor, and helps haul the 3500 to 3800 pounds that is the MK3.
