I got a somewhat similar story

He would have hit me except that I am a defensive driver. That means I don't automatically panic and swerve left to avoid him. That could hit a car in the other lane and I'd be at fault. But because I was defensive, I already knew I could move into the other lane and did so almost automatically. Otherwise, I would have stayed in the lane and get hit. Due to music dulling my awareness, I probably would not have the presence of mind to stomp brakes (the next logical thing).
