Engine Swap Edition

Talk about classic cars
Talk about classic car feels
Ask about classic cars here
A vehicle over 25 years old is technically a "classic" but it needs something more than just age to it
Post American, Asian or European classics
>>

I'm looking at financing a 66 El camino with a rebuilt 396 and a 700r4. Went and looked at it, started right up, very clean body apart from a dent and some chipped paint. Everyone I talk to says I should wait to get a classic till it's a second car, yet I'm looking at buying a restored one for my dd.

Am I crazy for wanting this or should I just buy something I'll hate because it's the "safe" move?

You shouldn't keep doing something you hate because it's safe, you're going to die one day. Get the El Camino if you can't see yourself driving anything else, but be prepared to ride public transport.
>>
>>15876927
Based on my experience, i would not do that. Honestly buy a lightly used older reliable car and get a cheap vintage motorcycle
>>
>>15876927
Where do you live? If you live where it snows and if they salt, that 66 is gonna live a hard and rusty life. But if you live in the southwest, you should be fine as long as it doesn't break too much
>>
>>15877015
Not my first car, I just graduated college and enlisted. I'm just looking to get out of my shit box that's more trouble than anything I've seen. I like wrenching, but I want something that isn't made of plastic and all types of electronics.

I'm not in love with the El camino, but it's in great shape, looks good, and I can get the muscle car I want without giving up utility of a pick up. Trust me, I'd rather have an old Mopar, but this seems more logical.

And you are also getting your first car. Imagine this scenario

That's not an excuse at all. Cropping and photo manipulation has been happening since the beginning of photography in the 1830's. Film, enlarges, in a chemical dark room made it easier when compared to the previous glass plates that photography started out with.

There's is a whole hell of a lot of cropping and manipulation done in this photo back in the 1950's.

Funny how high the horsepower numbers are compared to how dogshit slow all those cars are.

I realize that they used a different method of measuring power back then, and that they are automatics. It's just fucked how a car with so much power can feel like a tercel.
>>
>>15878042
>compared to how dogshit slow all those cars are.
Those cars are literally as heavy as your modern day bro truck, with, at best, 3 speed automatics.
Although a 727 will be faster than a A833 any day.

So I asked about Eagle wagons earlier and got no replies so I'll post a pic and a link

Guys I want this in the worst way. But I have nowhere to keep it and I'm too broke to buy it right now on my part time wages. I texted the guy letting him know I'd be interested once I save up enough to buy it (only a couple paychecks), and offload my pickup (which is a debacle in itself) if the wagon doesn't sell on Craigslist

http://chicago.craigslist.org/nwc/cto/5791757631.html

FUCK I NEED IT

Obviously it needs new wheels and knobbier tires
>>
>>15878042
>I realize that they used a different method of measuring power back then
They measured on the crank, not the wheels.
Just chop like 10% off the advertised hp and that'll come up with your WHP.
>>
>>15878042
Dude, the car is heavy as hell, and the HP and torque numbers are from the engine on a dyno with zero load on it other than water pump.
I can tell you that even with an auto and 2.70 gears in the rear end, that the 462 in my Lincoln does not not feel dogshit slow at all
>>
>>15878071
What's your actual question?
>>
>>15878042
Also, the fat big blocks were way detuned from factory to provide smooth, reliable power through all of the powerband. These are luxury vehicles after all, not muscle cars or sports cars
>>
>>15878078
>I can tell you that even with an auto and 2.70 gears in the rear end, that the 462 in my Lincoln does not not feel dogshit slow at all
300Cs did like 130 mph with 2 speed autos. These cars did not lack power no matter what the memers claim.
>>
>>15878089
If anyone knows anything about these. I would assume the only downfall to them is rust, but I'd take as many precautions to prevent it because I already do that to my truck. It's got the same motor as a jeep and a new transmission, so I don't see why it wouldn't be an uber cool and reliable daily driver with all the creature comforts I need
>>
>>15878095
That has nothing to do with power though, just gearing.
I've had my 79 Thunderbird up to 180 km/h before and that's a 3 speed c6 with 2.70 in the rear. I don't know how fast it could go if I floored it, cause the speedo stops at 180
>>
>>15878106
>If anyone knows anything about these.
You should be asking why some guy is selling an immaculate Eagle for less than 2 grand.
If it's not a scam, it's going to be gone pretty damn soon.
>>
>>15878110
>That has nothing to do with power though, just gearing.
Gearing can only take you so far.
At some point it's beneficial to just have more power and two-speed automatics are by no means ample for performance, however, because it's a two speed it had one really short gear and one really really reallllly tall gear.
>>
>>15878114
I know, thats why I immediately texted him letting him know if it does sell that I would be interested once I can get the funds together that I need before I can but the car

>>15878078
>>15878094
I know, the idea is just funny to me. To be honest, luxobarges should be diesels (dat no cost massaging seat) but manufacturers know people are retarded and want to see high numbers even if it's pointless
>>
>>15878094

>>
>>15878157

>>
>>15878161
Oldsmobile tried putting a diesels in many cars before, it never really caught on. Americans didn't want anything to do with diesels for a long time unless it was in a tractor or a pickup truck.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oldsmobile_Diesel_engine
>>
>>15878188
Wonder how many stations actually sold diesel in the mid 70's.
>>
>>15878198
Plenty I'd imagine, there were lots of diesel pickups back then was there not? Plus the 1973 Oil crisis pushed gas prices way up, I don't know about diesel though
>>
>>15878214
>there were lots of diesel pickups back then was there not?
Nah, most trucks back then came with a straight six.
Diesel was fancy euroshit or semi trucks.
>>
>>15878188
The Oldsmobile diesel was also a piece of crap. Mainly due to GM cheating out on parts. It can be made a good engine, my boss has one with 450k miles on it, but it has to be completely rebuilt with quality parts.
>>
>>15878219
>Nah, most trucks back then came with a straight six.
Gasoline/petrol i should say.
>>
>>15878222
Yes, it was junk, but when rebuilt for gasoline purposes, it was apparently very good, since the block was so strong.

My boss' truck is still diesel. The main problem with them was the use of stretch bolts for the heads. He rebuilt his in his machine shop, used ARP studs, put in a roller cam, increased compression a bit. It's a fantastic engine now, and is pretty damn good on fuel.

I will say, you can't beat the reliability of a Land Rover I4. It's never given me a bit of trouble.
>>
>>15878268
Pretty sure all of them had a V8 option from the factory.
>>
>>15878300
That's what I'm talking about. You guys are talking like the I6 was super common when I rarely see them.
>>
>>15878344
It's not that they're uncommon; it's that most of them were worked to death or are simply not for sale because there's no reason to sell a perfectly functioning truck. Unless it's a high-dollar vehicle, most people don't sell a car with zero problems.
>>
>>15878344
>You guys are talking like the I6 was super common when I rarely see them.

I was deadset on a 240sx but my parents surprised me with a 2002 Honda Civic ex coupe. good MPG so i cant complain, perfect daily and no issues other than its a Civic. So now i have about $4,000 to get a nice weekend/cruiser car. im not really that into Initial D style cars like i used to, (even though there was a AE86 for 3k i was itching to buy last year) and cars from the 1980s all look like theyre trapped i that weird 70s to 90s transition period where the models try to be innovative and cutting edge but end up ugly. ive always enjoyed the aesthetics of cars from the 1950s-1970s with the mean mugging muscle car look or the very elegant cruiser.
TL;DR whats the best 50s-70s classic car i can buy for under $4k or $5k if its a good deal, on a car thats reliable and not too demanding on maintenance?

pic related, its a 1977 Toyota Celia GT Liftback with auto (its a bonus for me since im a lazy fuck) its listed locally and the guys going by best offer.

Crown Vics you can still find at auctions. They are still used as police and other government cars as they were made a lot longer than the Caprice. Objectively though, the best fleet vehicle made was the Checker Marathon as it was designed first and foremost to be a great fleet car. Unlike the Ford and Chevy cars which were modified standard production vehicles.

ah yes travis bickles car.
how much could i possibly get a crown vic for at an auction? on autotrader they are going for around 4k or so
>>
>>15881683
like 1-10k depending on condition
>>
>>15881683
You'll find a lot of them fro around $1200-$6000 in my experience. It you want to get the SS edition, most good conditions go for up to $12,000. I like the Caprice more than the crown vic just because you dont see them as much anymore... They are a dying breed. And when people see mine, I get a lot of complements on it even though its not in the best of shape right now, I intend to do more restoration though. Parts are pretty cheap, that's a good thing as well.

Mine was an ex-police undercover car that needed some tlc, I got it for $1400 and it has the LT1 V8 in it. Fun car.
>>
>>15881789
ah that sounds great. so when you bought it at 1.4k was it roadworthy but just a little roughed up? or was the tlc required for it to be driveable.

It was driveable, It ran great. The only issue was that a tree branch had fallen on the car. It cracked the front windshield and smashed in the back one. The roof was undented though.

The previous owner didn't want to go through the hassle of replacing the windows and he came across a car more suited for his job. So he gave me a good deal considering all the upgrades he had done to it. (t-84 glass lens headlights, limited slip rear diff from an impala SS, power locks and trunk opener, cruise control, and so on.)

The car has over 200,000 miles on it and I have had to do some replacement work since I've gotten it but the parts are pretty inexpensive and the worn out parts were not too hard to fix.

Other than that its just cosmetic stuff to fix. The front fenders have a little rust rot, chips in the paint here and there, dog bites in the arm rests and tears in the seats. But I bought a near mint condition Caprice that was rear ended for $150. I plan to replace all the panels on the front of my car and swap the interior of mine with my parts cars interior. I'm about halfway done replacing my interior. I'm planning to swap the front panels next time I'm back home from school.

That, actually. And you could install a 1UZ-FE 4.0L V8 from an '89-'93 LS400 along with its A340E automatic transmission.

And if you wanted some REAL fun, make sure your 1UZ-FE is a high mileage engine (200,000+). Replace the headbolts with ARP studs, the head gaskets with MLS gaskets, the stock injectors with 7MG injectors, and new appropriate strength valve springs. Then, add a 76mm turbo with a Megasquirt ECU.

With about 16lbs of boost, you should be seeing a reliable, inexpensive 450hp-500hp to the wheels. And what's even nicer is that the A340E can totally handle the power as well. You'll need a new rear end, though, but that's not too expensive at all.

Some questions for you fellows:
There's a lot of 70s landbarges around my area in the $2500-5000 range. Most are in good condition.
Besides fuel efficiency, safety and creature comforts, what problems do these landbarges suffer from?
Are they mechanically reliable if fluids/wear items are properly maintained?
Are repair parts cheap?
If driven > 15 miles a day, could they be DD?
I live in the Southwest, so rust isn't too large a problem.
I've gone to forums, but those boomer fucks never give straight answers and always end up fighting over "muh ferd/ muh chebby".
>>
>>15889565
Seriously took me 2 hours to post this
>>
>>15889565
>what problems do these landbarges suffer from?
If post-oil crisis then they'll have some fuckery in the fuel delivery that was designed to meet emission but only accomplished headaches.
The worst of this was trying to get carburetors to adjust A/F on the fly.
If yours possibly has this, try to find a bolt on fuel injection replacement.

The emissions systems on late '70s cars are best gutted and replaced with an Edelbrock carburetor; provided you don't live in commiefornia. Other than that, they're very robust, mechanical parts are cheap; trim and accoutriments are expensive, but they work very well once you get new rubber bits and jettison the emissions crap.

I daily drive a '66 Imperial that I bought out in Arizona and have driven it over a thousand miles in a continuous trip with only a minor electrical gremlin; easily remedied.

Is there any chance of dual quad intake on small block Mopars?
Twin Thermoquads sound heavenly.
>>
>>15890070
I am sure you could, but unless you are going to run two 300cfm 4 barrels you are going to have way too much carb for your engine.
>>
>>15890070
That's a good way to waste a few thousand if that's what you're looking for. Just put on a big 4 barrel if you want the power.
>>
>>15890082
>>15890086
Central 4 barrels are never really sat that good to feed a V8 though.
From the little research i did
>>15890082
A single 850 CFM thermoquads was more than enough to feed a 340 but 340s are unobtainium.
Also the sex appeal of dual quads.
>>

unless you have a full race build that revs to 8k rpm and is a 340 then you really don't need 850cfm.

nothing special, the most common carbed 460 heads, d3ve's. Someone's selling some police interceptor heads on my local craigslist for $350. I'm CONSIDERING buying them.

I plan to dual quad tunnel ram it, put a street scoop on, some pop up pistons(i'm aiming for around 10:1 C/R), possibly aftermarket, stronger rods if I can get away with not having to rebalance the crank because of them, some radical cam that'll work with the tunnel ram and call it a day.

The worst part of this entire build is figuring out how I'm gonna shoehorn this big fat cunt into my 1977 maverick.
>>
>>15890120
It's going to have to be a 360 if anything.
Whether i need it or not is not my concern. Thermoquad secondaries>Quadrajet secondaries.

I still can't shake the logic that 1 barrel per cylinder is the best carburetion possible.

Yeah, I would have totally gone with them if this were just a mild build, but the tunnel ram only starts to kick in at around 3,000rpm, and I don't really wanna stop revving until I'm at 5,000rpm. The consensus on stock 460 rods seems to be that their max is 5,500rpm on a regular basis. I don't exactly like being that close to their known failure point. I'd rather have rods that can handle 8,000rpm and not worry about them being stressed to the breaking point.

Have a pic. It's a chunk of carbon I found inside the lifter valley

It some ways I know you're right. You'll have to spend so much more money for the same parts that would go on a chevy just because they're meant for ford. This might be why ford classics go for so much less than all the others. Ford parts availability and price, versus Chevy parts availability and price.

Still though, rebuilding a 351m and not just throwing in 400 crank and pistons is a bit retarded.

She hasn't been driven in a little over a year, guys.

I poured some gas in the tank, and into the carburator, but it'll crank occasionally and start, and then die. Ran good before it began sitting so I probably need to either replace the battery (would start with a charger battery hooked up and then die, wouldn't without) and also probably replace the fuel filter, oil filter, oil (it's pitch black wew) and maybe check the spark plugs. Unless I'm mossing something.

Rough idles for 2-3 seconds and dies. Only starts with a charger, so I know I need a new battery.

I want to make her run again, it's my old man's truck.

>>
>>15892154
Was there any gas in the carb before you stored it? Ethanol would royally fuck it up in that amount of time
>>
>>15892154
you could also try cleaning out the carb with some carb spray.

The fuel lines you can get some compressed air, disconnect at the fuel pump and fuel tank and blow through the lines.

The problem with ethanol and letting it sit is not that the ethanol itself goes bad, but rather it draws moisture from the air, and over time that moisture will eventually come to fuck you.

Dropped in to a classic thread back in January. My project car is a 1964 LeSabre post Sedan I've been working on off and on since 2004.

The carriers was optioned strangely with all the available chrome and stainless trim for the LeSabre, but with manual brakes, radio delete and no air conditioning. Engine was the little 300 cid Wildcat 310 v8 with a three speed manual.

This is a shot of the car fresh from paint. I had already gotten a good bit of trim on the car when I thought I should start taking pictures.

Main modification was ditching the dead 300 cid/3 speed manual combo. Since a proper Buick engine of the right era was impossible to find, I decided to nab a 425 cid/turbo 400 combo in a junked 79 Coupe DeVille. In retrospect a built Chevy big block might have been easier to shoehorn in. The 425 Caddy takes up every inch of space and required cutting the frame to get in. I also replaced the manual single cell master cylinder with a new 1991 Chevy pickup power brake unit. The Caddy engine is bored .60 over, since one cylinder was badly scored. Otherwise it has a stock cam with a 750 cfm Edelbrock carbine feeding it. Estimated power with the emission equipment gone is 250 hp at 4200 rpm and 450 ft lbs of torque at 2000 rpm.

For the moment I'm going with the full wheel covers that came with the car.

I ditched the front drum brakes and used Scare Bird adapter brackets to put discs on the front. They use 1991 Chevy pickup rotors, 79 ElDorado calipers and pads and 76 Skylark soft lines.

I agree, Elephants are too few in number and too classic to really change.

So today I towed a customers Willys Wagon into the shop, broke down on him on the road. Took a quick look at it and the radiator is pissing out coolant like hell and fuel system is clogged. Boss called him up and told him the problems and that the radiator needs to be recored and carb rebuilt and the owner said "no, I don't want to fix it". He's probably just going to have us tow it back to his house or business and just leave it.
