Rotary has power benefits due to multiple compressions per cycle but it lacks severely in efficiency. Rotary also has problems meeting emission standards that push rod engines can easy meet. Don't get me wrong, I do wish that they could engineer a rotary that is more efficient because you can get tons of power out of a small rotary.

Does it have to be as good or better than a piston engine? They have their own characteristics, why can't they just simply exist for variety's sake? I like that cars come in different shapes and sizes with different dynamics. If only the most optimum setup for performance was allowed, we'd all be driving Ariel Atoms.
