Most euro ars have it on a passenger side and it's the only correct way if you live in a LHD country. When you park a car, you do it close to the right side of the road. It's natural to you that you don't park close to the left side of the road.
On the top of that you can park closer to the pump than if you had a cap from a drivers side, because in that case you couldn't open the door.

i prefer gas cap on the left, but as someone who drives rentals frequently (particularly GMs) I'm used to having it on either side and needing to check the dash sometimes to verify as I pull up to the gas station nearest the airport. it's not a huge fucking deal.

having it on the driver side in a LHD country is fucking convenient though, since you don't have to walk around either the front or back of the car, especially in colder weather.

If you have floor mats that aren't fabric and leather seats the risk of static buildup is very low. you can also touch a piece of unpainted metal as you get out of the car to return to the pump.

So real question: Aren't fuel hoses not long enough to reach around your car where you live? (I assume most of you are Americans)

All the pumps I filled up at in Europe (Belgium, France, Germany, Italy and Netherlands so far), I can stretch the hose around the back of the car regardless of being parked with the fuel cap on the right side.

If the gas station is busy, I'll just queue for the least populated pump anyway.
