I've always wondered which of these legendary Jap sports cars was the fastest of its day, both on and off the track. Can anyone answer that?

Stock it was probably the NSX or FD. 276HP regulation or not none of the engines exceeded around 330 horsepower stock so lightweight and well-balanced was the name of the game.

With tuning the R34 GT-R was probably the fastest. AWD means you can control the power and the R34's AWD is better than what was in the 3000GT VR4. Nissan's ECU protections are shit-tier so it wasn't hard for tuners to reverse engineer and map for their own mods and the weight distribution was ok at around 55/45. The 3000GT was 58/42, had FWD-biased AWD, and not a lot of tuners for the 6G72.

The only way to make RWD viable with big power is to really get serious about making downforce like a Viper. Otherwise AWD makes more sense.

This is false. The VR4 is 50/50 under normal circumstances and it has a viscous center lsd that can send ~80% of torque to the front or rear. It's not high tech like ATTESA but it's still a performance AWD system.

In stock form?

Here is a best motoring shootout comparing all the fastest 90's Japanese sports cars in their stock forms, on the street and track:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sAoQEBO4Fxs

The Supra is shit in stock form, and would always get last place in the races at Tsukuba, so they rarely used it. Same with the VR-4.

In stock form, value for money was none of those, it was (and still is) the Evo V&VI. Same performance as the GT-R, but for less than half the price.

Are we really going to debate whether you want 500 horsepower with a 2L I4 or a 3L I6? The engine displacement alone limits what is feasible for the Evo. There's a big aftermarket and a lot you can do but realistically you can't exceed about 350 horsepower before you give up driveability. For a 2JZ-GTE 550 horsepower is no big deal. For an RB26 500 horsepower is fine with stock displacement.

The 3000GT was pretty much a fucking monster. Specially the MR variant. Americlaps cant say it's true because they got the comfy version and not the performance version.

Still the racing variant mighty spec v couldnt handle against it.

But then again... 90% of the board is full of cucks that think the 3000GT is a DSM and FWD biased because that's how much they care to know about cars.

I drive a 300ZX BTW so roast me faggots.

For the most part, yes. I'm not sure how the ATTESA works, but with most AWD, they lose on rolling power runs because they have to put all of their power to 4 wheels instead of just 2.

Or is this not how things work?
>>
>>15859509
>Day 43, I have gained the nips trust
>They still do know realize I am a krout
>>
>>15870575
The Skyline GT-R's ATTESA uses a transfer case and a wet multiplate clutch to engage the driveshaft headed to the front wheels. Maximum lock of the transfer case means that the torque is sent equally to both front and rear wheels.

The default mode for the clutch is completely unlocked. The GT-R will be completely RWD minus some slight slip from the inability to completely disengage the clutchpacks. The torque split is approximately 5/95 or 2/98.

The system determines how much torque to send to the front wheels as a function of the lateral g and speed differential between the rear and front wheels. High lateral g will keep the FWD engagement from kicking in with around 30/70 max split at full lateral g load regardless of the speed differential.

On the flip side, if you have no lateral g and the speed differential is high, the FWD rapidly locks up to pull you out. With the Skyline GT-R you're supposed to go hard on the throttle once you're at the apex. You don't want to have severe oversteer but you definitely want the back tires to get a bit loose so the AWD will kick in and pull you out of the corner. If you lose the back tires completely though you HAVE to stay on the throttle so the transfercase can work and send power to the front wheels to pull you out of the slide. If you let off the throttle you're back to RWD in essence as no torque goes to the front wheels.

Notice how this entire post details the system when there is a front-rear speed differential, which means that the system won't engage if you're doing highway pulls that aren't breaking the rear tires loose. The GT-R is functionally RWD unless you lose traction.
>>
>>15870669
Well that explains quite a lot. The ATTESA system sure does sound quite impressive, I must admit.

So I guess you're right, the Supra and the GTR would be right there with each other.
