Cars need to be taller than when they are designed to meet safety regulations. But lifting the whole frame is stupid so they lift the surface areas up. Because of that the wheel wells would me massive and need larger wheels to fit well. So they just put some filler and call it a day

They are pretty fat and ugly, though.
Just the other day, I saw a new Civic parked next to an old 4th gen Accord. It's just ridiculous how big cars are right now. A "compact" coupe now is the same size as a mid-size sedan was in 1993 yet you somehow get less cabin room and smaller windows.
