Even if you hate the rotary engine, you can't deny that it's one of the most beautiful cars ever made.
>>
I just hope the RX-9 doesn't dissapoint
>>
>>15804551

Its style hasn't aged in the slightest, it's still a gorgeous design.

I've yet to see an FD in person.
>>
>>15804569

Actually no, I've seen 3 in my life, all nicely done.
>>
I want one of these so badly.
Shame that by the time I might be able to afford one is when they will all be riced out or the price will be so much higher than now.
>>
>>15804551

That is not a beautiful car.
>>
>>15804588
post better then
>>
>>15804568
No matter how hard they try to create something beautiful, it still has to meet pedestrian safety standards, and therefore, cannot possibly look as good as the FD. Not saying it will be ugly, just accept it literally can't look as good as cars in the 90's did.
>>
>>15804568
God I'm so fucking hyped to see it. If they try to make it anything but a sports car I'm going to eat a pubic hair pie.

Screencap this post and I'll fucking do it if they don't make it a sports car.
>>
>>15804599
them minimum head light hight restrictions play a part
>>
It's really indescribable just how little this car has aged. Almost seems as thought Mazda's designers knew more than anyone else in the 90s about timeless design.
>>
>>15804551

they are attractive cars, but most of them have been turned retarded with wheels are both ugly and too big, like in op's pic
>>
bought rx8 from Chesapeake last month
Cons
>eats gas and 2 stroke
>barely AC
>must begin saving for inevitable rebuild from day 1
>only a couple of expensive power adder mods available. everything else is powertrain survivability mods.
>tune-ups or DIE.
>redline-a-day maintenance for catylitic convertor health

Pros
>tiny engine that could
>9krpms and happy to stay there
>dat smooth cruise
>BONUS: females actually come up to say how cute it is
>dual suicide doors are kinda cool
>rides on rails
>redline-a-day maintenance for catylitic convertor health

Best 5 grand I've ever spent.

>>
>>15805153
I don't really know, but from what I understand you do that with rotaries because they run faster. They are engineered not to use enough oil due to emission laws.

Am I correct?

Most money will go on maintenance items rather than performance enhancements. A rotary engine, due to its simple design, will require some major modifications if you want to make power out of it. Namely, disassembling it and porting the housings, or installing lightweight internals. Or turbos, very effective.

Maintenance items for "survival" are frequent oil changes.

>>15804632
Yeah, they really were ahead. The RX-7 looks like the automobile version of a slender, curvy and well proportioned female.

>>15804865
Nah. Those look old already. In real life, R34s and S15s give away that they are from the 90's, or early 2000s at best. They are pretty cars though, especially the Silvia. Good body lines.

>>15805058
It aged like all designs, but out of the 90's Japanese cars, it's the one that stood up the test of time in the best way.
>>
>>15805153
It has an oil injection system stock that puts oil into the combustion chamber, because of the design of the rotary engine.

It relies on what's called an 'apex seal' to provide a seal for there to be combustion pressure. These apex seals ride along the wall of the rotor housing to do this.

Metal on metal needs lubrication
Oil provides lubrication
>>
>>15805379
I was asking if they mix oil into the gasoline like a 2-stroke dirtbike.
>>
>>15805379
I'm this guy >>15805159

So you don't do it for performance, but for durability? Or does it affect performance too? Is it ideal to do it in any rotary, or even in some other engines?
>>
>>15805398
Yes

>>15805404
A little bit of both

By premixing you can delete the stock oil metering pump, and not have to worry about it shitting the bed. It's ideal for rotaries if you don't fuck the gas/oil ratio up, but only rotaries and two strokes.

Four stroke piston engines' oil and gas never touch, unlike the other two.

Hmmm... Seems like OP Agrees with me since he posted one without a license plate. If your state is gay enough to require a front plate I feel for you. I live in cuckafornia and they don't even require it. When I buy a RX-7 you can bet I will only have a rear plate. You can stomp your feet and cry all you want.
>>
>>15805153
because the apex seals need an even coat of oil that the 13b msc and even the 12a fail to deliver
otherwise they wear unevenly and over heat

this need for surplus lubrication results in burning much more oil than other types of engine
>>
>>15805618

Actually on some cars front plates will accentuate the overall look. For example the Evo VI's martial front styling says "I'm such a bad motherfucker that I'm forcing you to reshape your license plate and put it off center because I'm not going to allow that shit in the middle of my fucking grille", and without the plate it wouldn't be the same, it would just be a generic ricer bumper.
>>
>>15805920
Some people on /o/ love to trash front plates and brag about not having them, but in reality the only states that allow driving without front plates are farming flyovers and podunk dixie shitholes.

the answer is the license plate being fitted dead center in the fucking inlet for the radiator and intercooler, when it could just be up and 85% out of the way by using the factory plate mount.

But hey, I wouldn't expect any dumbass rolling around on replica TE37s to know better

-3 rotor crank costs $1200+ and you'd still have to make modifications to the extra housings. Prebuilt 3 rotor motors are $7k+
-turbos are easy to install but requires mods to raise the stock oil pressure, reinforce apex and side seals, and to keep the temperatures under control.
- the Renesis rotary already runs hot and doesn't tolerate overheating AT ALL. rule of thumb is if your temp needle is raising away from its usual position even slightly, you're probably damaging your motor. Thermal management is CRITICAL to survivability.

Basically, you have a hot, high revving motor with low torque and tight tune on a car that is mostly aluminium aside from the carbon fiber driveshaft. Its fun to drive, but modding it requires good prerequisite mods to keep from killing it. At least the rebuilds are fairly simple since there only 3 moving parts. (crank, 2 rotors)

Who hates the rotary engine and why? Never heard of this desu, every car guy i know has nothing bad to say about the rx7

Although they have a lot of shit to say about the supra, but thats for another thread
>>
>>15805159
its mainly to protect the seals. the stock setup uses metered oil squirters that feed from the crankcase. 4stroke oil, being less than optimal as far as burning cleanly, gunks up the engine over time.
The 2 options available is to bypass the crankcase oil feed with either a reservoir of 2stroke to feed through the stock spray system or to premix with the fuel and avoid heavy engine braking.
>>
>>15808809
Was about to say it's just /o/, then:

>Although they have a lot of shit to say about the supra

Who? What? Why?
>>
>>15806219
It's to allow more airflow to the front mount intercooler.
>>
>>15804551
Its purposeful but hardly beautiful. The Japanese don't make beautiful cars. Never have, never will.
>>
>>15807828
funny, there WAS one a few counties over, but i decided against it since i didnt have time to check it out.

still dont regret my decision.
>>
>>15808817
I don't really want to get into it, but their opinion of the supra is it isn't being used as it was designed. it was supposed to be some gran touring/luxury car, now it is viewed as a supercar in some circles. same with the skyline
>>

>>

>>
>>15808752
Porting is inexpensive/free and an easy place to find a lot of power. Intake and exhaust are worth quite a bit of power on the RX-8, especially if you go crazy like >>15804843 with a semi peripheral port on either side. Mazda gave up a shitload of power by making the RX-8 conform to California PZEV-II standards. If you live somewhere where you don't have to worry about smog or if you know a guy, it's easy to find stupid amounts of cheap power in the MSP.
>>
>>15808911
It's a way to reduce frontal area slightly without compromising headroom.
>>
I've got the chance to exchange my '10 Civic Ex Coupe for a manual 09' RX8. Should I? I know the hardships of owning a rotary, but since I'm young, no family and I've got a decent income I think it could be a good time to experience a rotary. I'm gonna go test drive it tomorrow. Am I making a huge mistake?
>>
I would cop it and do an ls1 swap
>>
>>15809110
lol, totally forgot about porting. that'll save until i get a spare engine to futz about with in preparation for inevitable rebuild time.

meanwhile, this motor only has about 35k on its build so im doing alright.
