Dealership technicians report in. I want to get a general consensus of how good the manufacturers are at the dealer level and how satisfied you are.

>Infiniti
They got a little bit Jewish on things recently but warranty still pays pretty well. Customers buy a good amount of services and most repairs. I work for an excellent auto group so that helps too.
Overall I'm pretty satisfied. I'm balls deep in the QX56 timing chain recall right now

Are throwout bearings prematurely failing on BRZs? Mine is shitting the bed at the moment and there are plenty of Google results of others having the same issue. I've never had to deal with it in any manual I've owned so I'm curious. 2013 6mt limited btw. Pls help.

Acura here.

This dealership in particular busts my balls. We're also balls deep in recalls and warranty work. It's about 25/75 on buying big repairs like steering racks. Brakes are done pretty often. NSX just dropped so everyone's pissing themselves over that too. Otherwise, I'm sitting here half the day waiting on a 0.6 airbag recall or some brake concern that leads to a warranty front brake job for 0.9

I am envious of Subaru guy because I have a WRX.

We still have people coming in for that shit. Luckily I don't do those, I get stuck with the TL update and AT service. At least none of them have had a judder afterwards, I don't want to replace torque converters.

Not fucking looking forward to redoing half my shelves just to fit the new Q60 parts and that fancy fuck new engine for the crossovers.

Anyone else shitposting from the shitstool right now
>>
>>15789179
That depends on who owns the dealer. Usually, kinda. You DEFINITELY want to find a local dealership network owned by some rich local family if you want decent bennies. This one gives me a huge discount on cars, and a hundo back on every payment.
>>
>>15789179
At Acura you get to be part of an Employee Lease program, and sort of lower car prices, but that's about it. It's not like a buddy buddy deal where they sell you a car with 2k on it for 5k less. Here when we're done with work and off the clock we can work on our own cars and generally nobody says shit about it unless the owner niggers his way in here.

>>15789181
I generally just play games on my phone from the shitstool. There's two stalls so I can get away with being in there for a while.

>>15789192
This rich family is jewish as hell. We have to pay $5 a week for a coffee/water fund, and we can't get the bottled water from the front, so we're at the mercy of whoever feels nice enough for the day to put the water in the fridge that never gets cold. If anything goes wrong under our hands we pay for it (I had to pay $117 for a spare tire that I didn't catch on a used car inspection, co-worker had to pay for rotors and pads for something that was the service writer's fault, etc.) I'd talk to the people who work there before jumping in head first.

>BMW
>Not a tech, I do collision

BMW's are by far the easiest to get into (an 8mm socket and a clip tool will take the bumpers, fenders, liners, and all exterior plastic off), but the fucking hardest to do any deep work save Audi (fuck those).

Mercedes can all die in an electrical metal fire, everything about them is fucked forever.
People who work at our shop have quit Mercedes dealerships because they're so fucked.

Murrican manufacturers and pretty alright save the little quirks and goddammit Ford stop with the mile long Christmas trees.

Asian cars are alright if they're from Japan, but fuck anything expensive and Korean at the same time.

>>15788735
Massive BMW recalls too, literally thousands of child safety seat mounts welded in so far. "So far" meaning past 3 months.

>>15789179
GroupOne offers "$1000 over the literal bottom cost of the car" for our employees, but others differ. Co-worker of mine got a 2010 Challenger SRT8 a few years ago for like $25k shipped from New York to Alabama, pic related.
>>
>>15789267
My girlfriend worked for Kia which was a part of Group One, and she liked it until the parts manager was a faggot and tried to make her a cashier instead of a parts runner. She quit after that.
>>
>>15789285
In his defense, the main reason for delays in our body shop is the parts department. We had a guy who had been doing it so long that he knew everybody and could get parts delivered within hours with 10-second phone calls, and our boss fired him for basically no fucking reason.
We hired a guy from the counter, and now single parts take weeks to arrive- because he doesn't know anybody at all.
So yeah, anybody that doesn't have a magic book of problem solvers is considered nearly not worth hiring to me.

quick question for the dealership guys

I had an apprenticeship for almost 2 years in a resto shop, but my old boss provided tools so I never bought my own. He started having a pill problem and everyone left, so I don't necessarily have a reference.

anyone have some advice about how I can apply this to getting into a dealership? now that I'm back in school I only need employment for maybe ~2 years wrenching before i get my SWE.
>>
>>15789468
They claim wear and tear and it isn't covered. Mine started making noise around 35k and now at 70k it's fucked so I'm replacing pressure plate, t/o bearing, clutch, etc
>>
>>15789478
Good luck. I don't think they'll cover it, but I hope you have more luck.

Ayyy isofix bro. And Alabama bro it seems.

I'm on the tech side of BMW. Anything mechanical they need, no real issues aside from they expect things to go in and out with 1mm of space to work with. Big mechanical jobs are pretty easy though, dropping engines or changing a trans/diff/transfer case are all very simple.

FCA here

Fiat sucks in a huge way. Warranty pays pretty shit most of the time and customers never get retail work done cause they're all fucking broke. I swear to god FCA is trying to put their dealerships out of business making us all jump through countless hoops for warranty and charging everything back if one duck isn't in its row. Wiring diagrams are usually wrong, service information fucks you over, technical assistance is a bunch of monkeys with no actual experience, one guy literally told me to "ask someone else" when I came to him with a problem that wasn't previously documented.

Life is good.

>>
>>15790426
I don't think their is going to be one. Your car is 8 years old. There would have been a recall by now. Subaru can just say it's old age or that you spent too much in the sun. And that's it. Don't expect it to get fixed anytime soon.
>>
>>15790471
Buy an oem dash cover and forget about it.. Subaru also makes sun shades specifically for each Subaru model. Once again Subaru will just say you didn't have a sun shade and that's it.

Kenworth and Mack tech here.

Fuck volvo for completely ruining Mack. What was once a mediocre company is now completely fucking awful. Zero fucking room to access engine compinents, the diagnostic software is unreliable bloated garbage rhat has a 25% chanceof actually working correctly without crashing and their tech support is just plain.bad.

Kenworth is much better, their trucks are actually serviceable and their tech support is competent.

Cummins is by far the best engine to work on and diagnose.

The dealership I'm at sucks ass. Wayyyyy to much drama. Fortunately it's a pretty good group of guys in the shop but our service advisers/parts people/sales are all pants on head mongoloid retarded.

Our warranty times are kind of wonky and we have lots of bullshit recalls but generally things are bad. Unless it's a Cadillac or rebranded cars. Like seriously Toyota get your shit together. Three different recalls on Vibe(aka matrix) passenger airbags. What the fuck guys

Also again, fuck Cadillac. I had a 2013 XTS the other day that the customer hadn't done any recalls on. There were 11 on the work order and nothing else.

Volvo just needs to get fucked, period. Their trucks the stupidest pieces of shit on the road, and I hope they die. The biggest problem with them is the fact that they use 13200# set back front axles that are ALWAYS AT 13200#. ALL THE FUCKING TIME. Owners can't keep tires on the fucking things and Volvo just goes "oh lol its the tires not the truck kthxbai". Nothing sucks more then selling steer tires to a Volvo owner, they'll be back in 50-100K Km because they've already fucked the tires and they want warranty.
>>
>>15790610
Some of our recalls are money though. On a few vehicles they had us remove the SIR connector from under the seat and crimp and solder the wires. They paid anywhere from 1.6 to 2.9 depending on vehicle. Now the longest it'll take me to do even the hardest ones is 1.2 for both seats.

Of course that means when you have to remove the seat you've got to cut the wires and do the recall again when you put the seat back in. Thank god I'm good at taking apart seats in car

They provide us literally with everything down to penterating oil, brillow pads for our angle grinders, etc. I even get new batteries for my torque wrench free of charge.
As long as we don't break shit too often, they have policy money set aside to cover us.
Free coffee and sodas from customer lounge. Shit I even get the girls at the cashier desk to give me a lindtor chocolate truffle every now and then that are reserved for customers at check out.
They cooked us steak and gave us beer last night for having a record breaking month.

A recall doesn't mean it's the same kind of giant recall you see on the news. There are recalls/service bulletins on tons of things, could be stuff like incorrect sunvisor sticker or a seal fit issue you where you spend 5 seconds putting a piece of butyl behind it. Toyota is really aggressive with stuff like this, obviously it doesn't mean their cars are garbage.

Warranty/recall times pretty much suck for every brand unless you find a trick that maybe lasts a few months before the people who determine the hours find out about it. Flat rate sucks, it's bad for everyone involved, customer, tech, shop, it really shouldn't exist, there's no other field that operates in the same way.

Explain more please. I just bought a truck with the 5.0 because Fuck turbos. Everyone online (forums) and in person ecoboost owners that I talk to are in serious denial about the reliability of the turbo. I did a passenger airbag on this 2000 I30. Packaging tape was holding the driver headlight in. A pack of niggers came out of the waiting area and drove off in it.

It's still income for the dealerships and stealerships and keeps them all in business.

I just wonder if some stealerships perform the airbag recalls on cars that were just about to be scrapped as a way to eke out that last bit of profit. They might even just shift the ordered airbags to inventory instead of installing them into the car going to be scrapped.

It got so fucked up here with airbags that they just started stealing them from other people's ordered airbags. Service writers would promise a client their airbag by a certain time then

So they would just jack it from someone else's order and push them back, but it kept happening.
Now pretty much every TL, RDX, MDX, RL and 3.2TLs airbags are being stolen. Parts is such a clusterfuck.

You have a jew of a dealership owner that makes the employees pay for the dealership's repair job mistakes instead of the dealership itself. That has got to be illegal. Even if it is on a contract, that doesn't necessarily make something illegal become legal suddenly. There are such things as illegal employment contracts that are rendered invalid by the state government. For example, no compete requirements that go for five years instead of the normal max of 3 years. More and more obnoxious shops make employees sign no compete contracts with 3 year terms.

One of the niggers that works there let a customer car leave with finger tight lug nuts in. The wheel collapsed into the fender well. Luckily the customer wasn't driving it the detail guy was. The shilling is pretty bad everywhere, but it's honestly shocking to hear some of the stories. I forget the shit that jew owners try to get away with.

Even at luxury lines, the jewing surprises me. Infiniti tried to fuck us on the qx56/m56 timing chain recall labor to save a few shekels. I guess enough dealers complained because they bumped the labor time back to the standard it was.

I can do a chain job in 7 hours now and they pay 11. But it took me 70 fucking jobs to get that good. Literally fucking 70 and counting. First one I ever did took me 15-17 hours.

Guts fell out and went everywhere. He had to reassemble it and then worry about the pump fucking up. Nobody has done it since. I've got them down to 7 hours with test drive now. Done about 70 now.

Yeah that's probably what I described. I do that on the m56, because the pump is chain driven so I can leave the oil pan on. QX56, you have to disassemble the pump to get it off with leaving the oil pan on. Fuck that.

>>15799346
Flushes are gravy work, I love doing them. Some dealers might bitch though. On the 7 speeds, you have to leave it overnight to be completely cold. Do the flush first thing in the morning. On our machine the engine runs with it in park to flush it, and then immediately set the fluid with the overflow plug when the trans temperature reaches 104 degrees.

It can be a pain so some dealers might groan about it or might only want to do a drain refill.

I have a system down that's easy for me, so I recommend full flushes on 7 speeds all the time.

I've never made a huge mistake like putting a timing belt on wrong or something. Every time I've tackled a bigger job it's always gone reasonably smooth but my stomach is in knots the whole time until it's done. Former Lexus apprentice here. (12 to 14)

The cars themselves are pretty easy to work on. Customer pay times are great, warranty pay is meh to ok at best. You can barely make time on the 2.5 piston recall. The customers are mostly nice people with money to be Able to afford repairs at dealer prices. They usually cheap out on tires and then bring the car back a week later complaining of road noise, but that's what you get when you buy fuzions lol. Also they like too complain about indoor noises a lot.

The dealership I worked for suvked tho. I only got paid 10 an hour ad an apprentice. Meanwhile the porters were making 10 an hour plus tips and didn't have to pay for tech school or buy tools.

I work at the local transit bus garage now. It's much better. Literally make twice the money, the retirement is great, plus the union covers Tue benefits and I get a 500 a year till allowance.

Most cars have 100k/10yr rust perforation warranties. Not to mention there's a certain point where rust like this is considered severe and premature depending vehicle age. Could be that the feds forced Ford to stand behind their shit-boxes in this instance. Chrysler is replacing prematurely rusted sub-frames, Toyota is doing complete frame replacements on their trucks made in the last 10 years, etc, etc.

Go to community college, don't waste money on a for profit tech school. Try to get a part time or entry level job at a shop at the same time, it's really hard to get hired straight out of school, experience matters a lot even if it's just understanding how a shop works. School and the field are the same way, it's all what you put in and how you advocate for yourself. If you are expecting to be told what to do and just check the boxes you aren't going to land anywhere good. You have to be aggressive and really seek out opportunities and knowledge on your own if you want to make good money and work at a good shop.

Nobody is going to expect you to show up on the first day with a full set of tools at an entry level position, cross that bridge when you come to it. You can buy a used single bay box of Craigs or Harbor Freight for $400 and most of the tools you need to get started for maybe another $600.
>>
>>15803123
>>15803100
If you working for a shop that requires that you bring your own tools you fucked up and need to find a new job
>>
>>15803146
Every single shop I know of is going to require you have your own tools as a tech, but not right away as an entry level lube tech
>>
>>15803146
Are you stupid? You get payed more for bringing in your own tools.
Ever heard of the law that you must be payed double the minimum wage if you provide your own tools?
>mfw minimum wage in California is 10$
>started making 14$ at Honda bring in own tool box and small tools
>fast forward 1 year now make 22$ because brought in more tools.
Fucking cuck using shop provided tools. Enjoy your 11$ an hour kid.

Enjoy your poverty tier mechanic job
>>
>>15802632
Currently make 23.50 an hour so it's not bad. Canadian though so maybe not all that good either haha. I still get stressed about bigger jobs but at least I don't gotta deal with a time crunch also. Basically as long as you're not taking 2 hours to do a brake job it's all good. Obviously there's times where we're just swamped with work so we gotta work fast.
>>
>>15803080
Yeah we would move it around to whoever was off that day or put it on the "diagnostic specialists" lift since he spent more time fucking off than working.

>>15803100
Roughly 10 grand to start out. Can be done cheaper if you get a box from.Sears or lowes instead of off a tool truck. Some tool trucks will also offer "apprentice kits" th at come with a smaller box, most of the hand tools you need. And an impact gun for like 5k.

I was lucky in the fact that I had starting buying tools in high school, plus my tech school got us a decent sett of stuff from Napa so I had all the basics when I started wrenching. I've been.doing.this 12 and have probably 15k in tools by now.

Dumb question, but are there any scholarships for older students out there? I'm 25 and looking to go back to school, but I keep hearing that getting into the trades is cash-on-the-barrel, no loans at all sort of deal.
>>
>>15803582
Some dealerships will pay for your schooling, but make you sign a contract to work there for x years at z wage.

I got student loans for my schooling, about half paid off by now.
>>
>>15803612
Thanks again, anon. Looks like studen loans are on my horizon too.
>>
>>15803627
Yeah it kinda sucks, but you do what you have to I guess.

Good thing about being.in school is that you get up to half off on tools from snap on.

Also, keep on eye out on Craig's list. Some times you can find people selling off their box and all their tools for pennies on the dollar.

Is this some meme shit or do all the dealerships in Texas just suck?

Snap On boxes seem like the best of all the major tool suppliers.

But Rousseau boxes are master race. So fucking nice. My dealer provides us with boxes. We have massive work station/tool storage combination units from Rousseau and Snap On doesn't even hold a candle to them. You can get them in roll around units as well.
>>
>>15804924
well thats why you dont make that much you have provided tool boxes
>>
>>15798277
Yeah unfortunately you'll have to get new keys programmed. There's a chip in the key that communicates with the immobilizer. If you just shove one of those ilco keys in there without setting the car up for it you'll basically put your car in a lockout mode and will have to take it to the dealer to 'un-lock' your car. I had it happen with my Mazda.

>>15798491
Pretty much what >>15798513 said. If you ever have the opportunity to buy parts NOT at the dealer, take up on it. They'll usually double charge cost of the part just for convenience of the dealership. It helps pay everyone at the cuck factory aka Sacura.

>>15803027
The community college we have in town does a fantastic job, and I'd recommend it far over anything else. Close by, small classes, wonderful instructors. I've learned a lot from going to class, and I'm still going for things I don't know.
>>
>>15789192
That's pretty dope. I've worked in corporate for an OEM and we got a decent employee lease program, now I work in corporate for a supplier. We get discounts at every OEM we supply for, but nobody offers that much, usually just around invoice price and no further benefit. I wish I'd gotten in at a dealer, seems like where the best discounts are.
>>
>>15804949
I'm getting paid more here than I would be anywhere else. I provided all of my own tools, just not the box.
>>
>>15804949
We have our own provided boxes, so does VW and Audi. Even when I brought my own box at other places (Mazda, Hyundai, independent) I made just as much. It depends on the level of work you're doing and how far along you're with the place you're at. If you do a bunch of Honda Interactive Network tests you'll get paid more, and if you go to factory training you'll also get paid more. It's based on your skill level.

Same here desu, it's just not trusting yourself to do it right even though you've got all the skill in the world. Welcome to why I have literally never done work on my own car even though I did fine in auto classes.

Just kill me already senpai, it's better that way.

Am I the only one going slowly insane from all this warranty bullshit at VAG? Pictures, documents, videoes, original package, TPI numbers, SW updates, ODIS shitting itself like always..

There's so much damn paperwork now it often takes more time than the actual job.
>>
>>15796763
People actually use impact guns on drain plug? It takes three fucking seconds to do it with a wrench.
>>
>>15807168
I had to stop a dude from doing it at Mazda. He then wanted to put the drain bolt back on with a 1/4" impact drill. Like, one of those Makita 18v ones.

>>
>>15809718

>customer pay short block replacement is 9.0 hours
>warranty replacement is around 6.8

no i know normal silly warranty times, but i remember techs getting time+half for warranty shit so they did it right. might have been a shop formans thing, he was a former tech who actually started fighting for better pay and less bs for techs.

>yfw shop gravy whore who gets paid 30/hour and cant diagnose shit starts getting the check engine lights, sportwagen water leaks and drivability shit that 12/hour starter mainshop techs got.

the fucking toddlerfits he threw were delicious

We multiply the regular job by 0.4, and that's what we get paid. It's a great way to get fucked in the ass while making absolutely no money.

>knock it out with a sledge
variety is the spice of life

>>15809718
Not that guy but fucking shitty warranty pay were one of the many reasons I up and left the industry. Last job was at a Honda dealer and we were joking that pretty soon warranty times would be payed in thousandths of an hour.

Had one like that a few years back, customer with a brand new 2012 Accord was complaining of a rattle in the driver's door at 30+mph. Turned out one of the bolts holding the regulator in was cross-threaded at the factory and left loose. Oddly the window worked just fine despite that bolt.
